Title: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: Pompeynick on November 28, 2016, 02:13:51 PM Fairly new to the forum, so please forgive me if this has been covered before, but I was wondering how people chose their teams to follow. I would guess that football and cricket teams in this country are, in the main, restricted to where you were born, or , who your family supported, but when it comes to US sports teams, that probably is not the case.
For my part the NFL team I follow goes back to the 1980s and the channel four coverage of the game. The highlights show always had a main game of the week, where you got to see more of the plays rather than just the scoring of TD's and FG's. One week my brother and I were watching one such game and it was brilliant, going back and forth between the two teams , lots of cut and thrust, and in the final seconds of the game, an amazing one handed catch by the wide receiver resulting in a game winning touchdown. The commentator then uttered the fateful words "that catch made all the more incredible by the fact that he is legally blind in one eye " Well, my brother looked at me , and at the same time we both shouted " that's the team we will support from now on" Sadly for us we had chosen........... the New York Jets. At least we didn't choose the then abysmal New England Patriots, I mean, they will never win anything. Thirty years on and we are still waiting for another amazing moment, let alone season. Still, once chosen you have to stay loyal, don't you? So how did you choose yours? (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/79/d8/35/79d835f4eb9c02641888cb3d5ec68f3d.jpg) the herschel walker trade followed by 92,93,95 superbowls was fun. not too much fun since, but looking up currently Chicago White Sox. A slugger called Frank "the big hurt" Thomas in the 1990s. Hit it miles, followed them since (http://www.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000YgxjhXsYhR0/s/600/592/073111RVa-BOSatCWS-318.jpg) NBA, never followed anyone, perhaps would have got into the sport if i had attached to a team when young. Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: Tal on November 28, 2016, 03:00:55 PM I like having a team to follow in everything I watch. So, growing up and appreciating sport in the mid to late 90s, it was:
Glory hunting (http://www.thedeadballera.com/TeamPhotos/Yankees/1998Yankees.jpg) Glory hunting (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/4e/88/3c/4e883ca8e3f7fd0d3d9aca13b96c0e7d.jpg) Errr... (http://www.avidly.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/22_1norwoord_miss.jpg) I picked the Buffalo Bills for the name and that they were good. How was I to know the last time they'd make the playoffs would be 1999? Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: Pompeynick on November 28, 2016, 03:01:37 PM The MLB team I follow is the Texas Rangers. I started watching baseball back in the 1990s, I learned the rules from watching baseball movies, Sky did a week of movies one year to promote the World Series, which, they had secured the rights for. I think the New York Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves in what was the first in Joe Torre's winning run. It was a great series to start watching baseball as the Yankees lost the first two at home but came back to win , I think they won the next four straight. It was the beginning of an exceptional team that dominated for many years, if only I had chosen them....... No, who wants to follow the winning team ,who has more money than anyone else?, not me.
I did not have a favourite team for many years, I just loved the game, the complexities of it was what kept me tuning in. Channel five took on the coverage and had a live game every week with Johny Gould and, in its time, three different Americans based in England who could explain and expand on anything that needed clarifying. It was also great fun to watch the banter between them. Still I did not have a specific team until 2008/9. Pompey were, at that time, about to implode with eye watering debts and had gone into administration, so , when watching a game involving the Rangers it seemed I had been sent a"message" from on high when the commentator said they were going into administration, but wealthy new owners were being sought to move the franchise on. This has not been such a bad pick, Two World Series appearances, the only disappointment being we lost both, the second of which we were only one strike away from victory. I still await my first live game but hope to visit both the Jets and the Rangers during 2017. Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: The Camel on November 28, 2016, 03:19:37 PM I don't follow any particular team in any American sports, although I enjoy them all (except NHL).
Makes it easier to be completely unbiased when making betting decisions. Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: Cavey007 on November 28, 2016, 05:04:15 PM I started watching the nfl when I was a kid in the 80/90s. My dad used to record the highlight package and we used to watch that together. He was a dolphins fan. I'm assuming because they were big back then and obviously Marino.
My reasoning was, we'll. I like Tigers as a kid. So. 25 years on I'm a Bengals fan. Followed it for years without paying a huge amount of attention. Just keeping an eye on scores. Then started doing fantasy last season and got hugely invested again. As well as the Bengals getting good which helped convince me to watch more. I'm a postie so walk around listening to podcasts for 4 hours day so consume a lot of info during the week, that why I figured I'd do my blog. It helps that the brother in law loves the game too. Although he's a niners fan. Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: AdamM on November 28, 2016, 05:07:45 PM The only American team sport I follow is NFL, and while I did watch it a bit back in the early Ch4 launch days, I've only been back into it properly about 3 years. Although all my mates that are into the game have teams, it felt a bit weird to artificially pick one for myself now.
Instead, every week during the season I have a little accumulator bet based on teams current form. I keep a record of who's won most often for me during the season, and that's my super bowl team. I buy myself a hat and shirt for that team to wear at the annual super bowl party I go to. Last year I was a Panthers fan for the day and the year before, Patriots. So far this year, Patriots, Raiders, Cowboys and Dolphins are my winningest teams. Much more fun than picking a single team to support for no good reason :) Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: arbboy on November 28, 2016, 06:10:03 PM NBA is my sport and I grew up in the greatest ten years in NBA history. Truly spoilt as a kid even though it wasn't until 1990 you could actually watch the NBA on screen sport on the first Astra sky sat dishes. Obv as a kid I demanded one of these for xmas that year. Having sky was a big deal in this era similar to having a mobile phone and I loved being able to watch the NBA every week. People really don't appreciate how good we have it now watching USA sport compared to that era in the late 80s early 1990s. You can watch virtually every NBA game for free now on betting site streams.
So the first game I ever watched on screen sport after xmas was spurs v bulls. Jordan was in his absulote prime in 1991 everyone in the U.K. Was wearing his shoes as fashion statements even though hardly anyone could actually watch the NBA. Never being one to follow the crowd even at an early age I never owned a pair of Jordan boots and this game was just an awesome first watch. The Texan crowd was going nuts waving their 'rowdy rags' in the air as the commentator called them. Antione Carr was a huge 6'9' 270lb power forward crowd fav from witcha state uni for the spurs who used to fire up the crowd to do this during time outs. The atmosphere just looked incredible and I was sold on the spurs the minute David Robinson went coast to coast and dunked right over Jordan on a fast break. Robinson is probably the most principled and morally correct man to ever play in the NBA as well as being the greatest ever pure 7 footer athlete in any sport in any era IMO. His athletism was truly frightening compared to other big men who played the game in that era. Robinsons ethos and morals made the spurs what they are today and the culture has carried forward to this day as he mentored Tim Duncan in his rookie season into becoming the greatest power forward of all time but sold the spurs culture to Timmy. Pop as coach just makes the spurs so easy on the eye to watch for twenty years since and they move effortlessly from era to era because of great front office mnangement. Players take huge discounts salary wise to play for the spurs because they are the class organisation of the NBA even though they operate out of a tiny market location wise. I must have watched that game 200 times on the old Scotch video tapes after and still have it on that format at mums house now. Would love to watch it again but no vcr nowadays to watch it on. Pop for me is the greatest coAch in NBA history. Anyone could have won 6 rings with Jordan as the main man. NFL wise I am like camel i have no team at all. I never got into the NFL until I entered the betting industry so knew nothing about it during the initial Glory days in the U.K.back in the day. I just love watching the sport weekly without having a team. I don't even understand the play books or the advanced rules but for a strange reason I just love watching it. I probably watch more NFL games a year than EPL . Baseball and NHL hold no interest for me at all. Title: Re: How did you choose your NFL/MLB/NBA team Post by: Marky147 on November 28, 2016, 07:57:47 PM Was staying with Flushy during one of the Brighton festivals in 2009, and the NFL season had just started.
I bust on the Sunday, and he said to stay until Monday and rail the games. I remember he had a big bet on the Colts to beat Titans, but was worried because Keith had told him he liked the other side :D I watched 'Blind Side' shortly after, so went with the Ravens, because Oher played for them at the time. Tried watching Baseball, but it's so boring, even if you bet on it. Can watch Basketball, but have to have a bet on to do so. |
