Title: World Darts sweats, bets & bants
Post by: tikay on December 14, 2016, 10:00:31 AM
The World Darts starts tomorrow, so as blonde is blessed with some pretty shrewd Darts guys, hopefully we can have a bit of fun & a few nice bets along the way.

Sky Sports have a dedicated Channel for full coverage, & I'm sure some of you have access to streams to watch it.

Does not seem to be too much fun backing MvG at around 4/6, but there's always a rich variety of sub-markets we can get involved in most days.

Anyone fancy naming a lively outsider, or taking on MvG?

One for the Maths boys.....

Total 180s, though only 2 Firms have priced it up so far. Presumably the others will price it up before tomorrow, too. The current line is around 655.

Day 1:

I like two underdogs in the market tonight, Caven and Evans.

The PL has completely messed up Smith and I read somewhere he's lost 11 consecutive games. Evans has previous in beating seeds at the worlds and seems to bring his best game out at Ally Pally.

Caven is a solid pro and Painter very unpredictable due to his light schedule. Not sure how Caven is underdog tbh.

Any thoughts lads?

My only thoughts are that I hope you are correct, I have had modest wagers on both. Think I took the nits handicap line on Evans though.

Good luck up both of them, and us.

I've had modest interest in both the handicaps and straight wins. Good luck all round, I can't wait for it to start!

I'm all over Painter. Caven a huge choker and had a horrible year. Barely a player in the first round draw I'd have him fav against. Painter on the downgrade but was in decent nick at the players and at least you know his arse won't collapse the minute he gets on stage.

Like Evans too.

Would love to see Caven play Cullen in the first round.  Surely both of the chokers couldn't find a way to lose!  Agree on Painter.  Made him a decent fav to win this match.

I've had some longshot punts on betfair just £2 each to win

Thornton @ 580 really good for a player when's in form can beat anyone
M.king @ 670 as he's in the bottom half of the draw
Norris @ 330

He can't be feeling too good this morning.

I am on Chris Dobey quite large today.

Well in form, not afraid of the big stage vs Pipe who I feel is on the decline to the nether reaches.

Dobey 4/5 most places better on betfair ofc.

I am knocking it in like a champ so far. Getting John Henderson and Bunting beat yesterday was brutal.

Chris Dobey to get me back in the game today, please and thank you.

Darts is a funny sport where a lot of new players tend to smoke their way up the rankings early (ahead of the curve and mainly down to variance i think).  They then delude themselves that they are a top 10/16 player then add all the pressure to themselves to maintain this belief which is false talent wise and then when their results regress to the mean and they fall to probably their natural ranking the wheels have totally fallen off and the career is over as they are mentally shot.  Wes Newton has fallen into this category as well.

Pipe must realise talent wise he is never going to be a long term top 16 player surely?

Title: Re: World Darts sweats, bets & bants
Post by: Killerkilsby on December 18, 2016, 05:12:30 PM
Yes was difficult seeing Pipe struggle, thought Dobey was on the verge of a collapse in the 4th set but his nerve held. Wouldnt of been over confident going into a final set decider.

Anyways whats next chaps?

I cant see anything else tonight.

Kist to beat Dolan on Tuesday as Exstream said before is a good spot and I doubled it with Dobey today so extra sweats!!!

Kist is a great bet but Dolan is hugely unpredictable. Nice to have the sweat though!

Arb - what are your thoughts on Dobey?

Decent action, seems to have some bottle on TV as well. They said on commentary he's being mentored by Gary Anderson but then again so was Michael Smith and look what's happened to him in recent months!

Anyways my bet tonight after research is going to be Gurney -1.5 sets at 8/11.

Many reasons including bringing good form into the tournament and I believe he has improved his finishing to the standards of his scoring.

Chalk this up as a winner to go 2/2 on here.

Was annoyed didnt get the 3-0 as Id also snuck a cheeky bet on that but cant complain lions share was on 3-1!

He looks a top 10 player to me at least. Superb action and taken to the stage pretty well. Still lacks a bit on consistency at times but has a 100+ game on his day at the minute. No idea why he was the price he was against Pipe.

Bet Bright an absolute comedy company, what is the point of their existence.

Clean account, first bet in ages, a modest £35 on Tengku Shah to beat Chino on Sat @ 13/10 (betfair price at the time 2.28), having been through both players' formlines on the soft tip darts circuit.

Shah went off slight favourite in the end @ 1.94, 19/20 best price and won a close affair 2-1.

My max bet now on any selection is 1p.

Huge fan of Corey Cadby having watched him in Australia this year and in Masters tourns where he beat Taylor and played well against Wright.

I mentioned him on Lil Dave's diary a while ago then people have cottoned on to his ability unfortunately having seen him hose up in the world youth final at Minehead.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see him beat Joe Cullen tonight, but I wouldn't be backing him @ 11/10, Cullens been a lot better this second part of this year, prices seem about right to me.

Yeah sadly the cat got let out the bag with Cadby before being able to cash in. I can see him going off fav if he plays like he can in the prelim. Qiang was useless last time he was here so can see a 6 leg pummelling with an impressive average.

I wonder if he will move over in the next year or two and play the tour full time. I imagine he would do some damage if he did.

Assuming Cadby wins the first game comfortably, I really think he'll do a number on Choker Cullen.

On Mervyn King tonight think itll be close but he shoould edge west.

Also on Lewis 3-0 at 8/13ish and slightly above, he will lay down a marker and always strt well here (not dropped a set for 4 years)

cadby been done at 30/1 for £200 on bf!!!!! for the title plays a guy who is still 1000/1 for the title and is 4/6 to win the match.  Hard to understand how someone could back him at a shorter price than Lewis after his qualifier to win the title.    They play each other in the 2nd round as well potentially.  5/6 each of two Lewis v Cadby!

To land the 30/1 wager he only has to potentially beat Cullen then Jackpot then Barney then Taylor then MVG then Ando.  30/1 acca!  Possibly the worse bet ever struck in the history of betfair!

My Mrs thought Cadby was an angry looking lesbian.

Think he could carry off a Jake Cody lookalike as well as the lesbian look.

In all seriousness now price up Cadby v Lewis in the next round.

Would be insane if the average bet went south in the first round by a qualifier.  Also have to feel for Cullen if he averages 3 figures here and gets done in the first round again.

I don't see how security could stop loads of people chanting?

I'm sick of it too, not so much the stand up if you love the darts, but defo the Toure song and defo the "feed the stands, let them know its christmas" and "boring boring tables".

I think during the Cadby Cullen match when both were averaging 108 the whole crowd had their back turned. Massive shame but I guess if the fans want to pump money into the game with ticket and drinks purchases just to enjoy the walk ons then the chanting and drinking then the organsiers and players won't be that bothered when cashing their cheques in.

tbf, it relies on the crowd to yield to the pressure from stewards.

for example, they do try and shut down the 'cheap seat' type songs and were pretty successful the night I went - perhaps we weren't drunk enough to stand up for our basic human right to chant abuse at the other sections.

My lot were on our final warning within 10 minutes of arriving in Blackpool earlier this year. We may have had one or two beverages prior to arrival.

Funny story, my brother had one of those retro England '66 T shirts. It was not a football shirt, it was a T Shirt. The stewards wouldn't let him in. He went down to one of the seedy shops on the prom and bought what can only be described as an apron with a penis on it. He put that over his shirt and was allowed in no problems. How can a penis apron be more appropriate than a T-Shirt?

MVG's route to the semi's just gets even easier than it already was.

Huge game for Gurney and Webster in the next round worth way more potentially than just the £13k at stake prize money wise draw wise in future major events being in the top 16.  Although being stuck at 16 or 17 in a nightmare of constantly facing MVG in the last 16!  Bunting and Whitlock currently fill these spots.  Maybe thats why they both tanked this year to get out of the black hole rankings wise of that spot!

£38k minimum for the winner (£25k locked up already) and a possible top 16 spot in the order of merit given most of the players currently above them in the rankings have 'dropped' money this year at the worlds compared to what has fallen off from 2015 on the 2 year list.  Freeroll at £80k for whoever gets through and can beat MVG in the 1/4 finals.

http://www.pdc.tv/pdc-order-of-merit

The gap between 16th and 15th is very large relative to most other gaps in the rankings and maybe there is a bit of tanking going on around that level as people try to take a step backwards to bink a big cash to bypass the 16th/17th black hole in the rankings.  Trouble is the hole is so big now to jump from sub 18 in rankings to 15th or higher is going to take a huge cash (1/4's+) for most of these players even at the worlds.  Probably a final in any other TV major.  Going to be interesting watching this area of the rankings this year as MVG becomes more and more dominant.

1/2 lewis 2/1 barney but lewis will be much bigger.

fuck me just looked and it is a flip!!  Marathon bet got 1.96 Lewis.  Jesus.  That is big bet material.  Another over reaction to a decent average in a blow out game with no pressure.

Someone has certainly taken a view, wants to lay Dolan +1.5 for £4.5k at 9/5 on the exchange

Edit: Backing Klaasen -1.5 for £8k too at 4/7

Seems incredibly short for a guy that is certainly capable of falling asleep for a few legs

Maybe someone knows that Dolan shut his fingers in a door last night?

Blacktype are 11/10 commission free and lay a bet to lose a monkey to anyone supposedly.  Looks a good time to test them if you have never had an account.

https://www.blacktype.bet/promotions/pdcdartspromo/

They are also offering 10% cashback on losing match bets at the worlds up to £20 as a free bet.  It is a net loss figure over the whole event but if you only have one bet on Lewis there you still qualify.   So if you have £200 on Lewis tonight and he loses you not only get 11/10 you also get a £20 free bet as well.

Thus far it's been the most uncompetitive tournament in years. 4-0 backers in absolute clover. MVG the only really short one not to deliver the 4-0. That said it should start to improve from here on.

Was thinking for the reasons for this and wondering if the new tours around the world in far east/Aussie/Dubai etc where its top 8 in the world and locals in a masters format alongside the premier league is just making the top boys even more used to the huge stage/noise and more and more battle hardened?

The other factor is the worlds is now worth £350k and every other TV major hasn't changed from £100k so winning the worlds (or going deep in it) now is more and more important ranking/money list wise compared to previous years.  Winning the world's this year would jump any of the top 40 or so players in the rankings straight into the top 5/6 in the world minimum basically for the next 2 years.

Webster most 180s vs Gurney.

Webster is 7/2 betfair.

Also fabcy Webster to get it done and dont see why gurney is <1.5

You love a shortie away from home Fraser.  You backing Everton as strong at 4/11 if the game was at Everton?  The bets are the same effectively EV wise.  As long as you think you edge is just as big at 4/11 at home as even money away the bet is fine (ie if you make Everton 4/6 away at Hull you would make them a 2/9 shot at home)

think my last suggestion was away against Hull , as a rule I prefer home ties in the Premier (  diff in the Championship)

is it really an away match at Hull with only half the stadium full ?

Interested if you think they are a bet at Ev ?

I am interested in whether you would be backing them equally as strong at 4/11 if the match was at Everton.  Yes or no?  I have no view on the game tbh.  You can't just ignore home field advantage it is proven year after year after year to be the factor it is when games are priced up.  There is a lot more to playing away from home than how full the stadium is for the away team.  I would imagine at xmas it is more likely to be full than most others weeks right?

He isn't 1/2 that's the problem.  He is 8/13.  Not sure he should be much bigger than 8/13 (or 13/8 barney) in order to take him on.  Closer to 6/4 after you paid your 5% as well on the machine.  At the prices i could only back Taylor.

In 2016 Taylor has better average, second only to MVG, other than cadbys 5 games of course
Better checkout %
Worthy favourite, not past it

Barney averaged 95 falling over the line against Lewis who beat himself even though he beat Barney up in most of the stat categories (without talking through my Wallet!).  Taylor averaged 101 against Kim.

I haven't subscribed, but I heard Nigel Sealey say on a podcast the other day he was doing well.

Presumably he picked Gurney to do well(?)

He could easily be having it off as a lot of his bets will be 180's/average over/unders/hcaps etc i would imagine even though the service in general doesn't like backing favs (on the horses anyway)  I bet he has put up Ando ew as well because it was the most obv ew steal in darts history at 1/2 1,2.

Having an argument with a friend of mine.

I reckon MvG is the greatest darts player ever and Taylor would have won <5 world titles if he'd been around.

My mate reckons Taylor in his prime would have beaten MvG comfortably and consistently and it wouldn't have made too much difference and Taylor would have still won >10 world titles.

Obviously I am correct, aren't I?

Think Taylor at his prime was more dominant over the field than MVG is now.

But the general standard is way way better now.

So, in short, impossible to compare the two.

You are right on the averages. It's a daft argument, though.

If it weren't for Taylor, there would be any sky money to create the force the PDC has become and the players wouldn't have worked to such elite levels to compete with Taylor.

Happens in every sport and past time. The last guy is the reason for the next, so it's absurd to imply you can put one era in another.

Who's to say Eric Bristow wouldn't have been throwing 119 tonight? Or Puskas would have scored 60 goals for Barcelona in a season? Paul Morphy would have beaten Magnus Carlsen in a chess match?

Many of the best discussions between friends are a little daft Tal.

He is a huge Taylor mark and to be honest I just like winding him up but I really believe MvG would beat him.

Agreed it is a silly argument. I reckon Bolt would beat Carl Lewis as well for what it's worth!

There is also the question of longevity when it comes to "greatest". No one knows yet how long MVG can maintain this sort of form. Taylor and RVB have both had ridiculously long careers playing at the highest level.

Looks like Billys go stand out 6/1 this evening so will have to forgive him and pile in again :)

The best bet of the whole event was the 1/16 on offer pre event on a 170 checkout taking place at any time in the event!  That literally must be a 1/500 shot nowadays.  MVG had 2 in a set one night.

BDO studying for the lakeside.  The firms must have done their absolute bollocks on this event.  One fav beat i think the last 6 days.  Vast majority of favs covering the handicaps.  Averages flying over in most of the late games.  total fav/over fest.

Averaging 95 apparently, which is 3 higher than anyone in the BDO Mens 2nd round. Not bad for a 16 year old.

Justin Van Tergouw, remember the name.

Made a final on the PDC development tour this year, beating Josh Payne in the Quarters 4-2

what is Lakeside normally? a night-club?

Venue for small bands/tribute bands etc.  Hotel/Conference/wedding gaff i think as well.  Nightclub.  Leisure club.  All sorts of out of date stuff that some punters clearly love.

Pretty old school venue.  The two brothers also own the huge leisure complex where the world bowls event is held indoors in Norfolk on the BBC.  My gran and grandad went for years.  Proper 5 star place for oldies to dance and eat all they want all day and watch the bowls.

Pretty sure the two brothers are not short of a few quid.  They know their niche markets and serve them very well.
