Title: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: Wardonkey on February 08, 2006, 05:49:44 PM I am moving house this weekend, being my well organised self I have only today informed NTL of this. They have informed me that the earliest they can install the neccesary bits and pieces is Tuesday the 21st. This leaves me with 10 days without internet access. There will be no active phone line until NTL have sorted it out so I can't use a dial up connection.
I have a 3G phone on the 3 network. Can someone with greater technical knowhow than myelf advise me as how I can set up an internet connection using the phone, and how much I might expect to pay? Please help me! Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: b4matt on February 08, 2006, 06:11:04 PM eeeeaaaawww eeeeaaaawwww eeeaaawww to know better than that....

The link at least confirmed that I don't know enogh to attempt this on my own! I have a techy friend whose help I will seek. I might need to buy some bits and bobs. If it's not a realistic option I'll just have a week away from cyberspace! Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: thetank on February 08, 2006, 11:57:21 PM I don't know anything about mobile phones but......
If you have a wireless laptop, then BTOpenzone might be a good plan. It's a bit steep at £10 a day but if you're going to be offline for a couple of weeks then their £40 a month is a viable option. Find yourself a nice quiet wee Hotel bar that is a BT Openzone hotspot. There are a few in Leeds, you can check on their website. Play poker and have some nice young barmaid bring you juice! This is what I'd do. Best part is, even I managed to set it up, they have a helpline. :D You've got to watch though as some places have a better connection than others. In a Blackpool hotel, I found perfect connection in the lounge and hee-haw reception in the bar. Bit of a bugger for me as the lounge was non smoking. Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: Wardonkey on February 09, 2006, 12:19:40 AM Cheers Tank,
I'm buying a new laptop next week anyway. I've checked out the hotspots in Leeds, there are hundreds! What I'm really looking for is a way to connect to the internet while I'm at home but if I can't do that reasonably cheaply/easily then now I have a good excuse to go to the pub! Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: JungleCat03 on February 09, 2006, 12:38:05 AM Alternatively , take a trip to Brighton where they have pier to pier internet access, so you can sit on the beach in your speedos and sunnies...
...build a chip stack and a sand castle at the same time. It can't be beat! Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... With a bit of luck one of your neighboors might be running a wireless network. I know I can detect my neighboors network. Might be a good way to meet them, pop round and ask if they mind you using their network on a temporary basis. stu Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: M3boy on February 09, 2006, 01:41:28 AM Go and get a Vodaphone 3g Card - pay as you go, then flog it on ebay when done
Failing that, just use your mobile as a phone line - can be setup via bluetooth - easy to do, but costly. Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: Wardonkey on February 09, 2006, 02:37:23 AM Thanks for your assistance gents.
I now have a number of options to look into. Pauls seems the simplest solution if I can't access a nieghbours network. Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: kojak_baby on February 09, 2006, 05:06:02 PM **WARNING** 3G cards for PC s and/or laptops need to carry a health warning.... ;tk;
Read the small print and you will find that if you go over your monthly limit you will be billed a tidy fortune, something in the region of the Gross National Debt of a South American Country.... IMO.... Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: TheJagster on February 10, 2006, 06:44:09 AM Pauls advice is best. Or ...if you know you will use it you can get a 250MB limit on the card for £28 per month....a lot cheaper than sitting in Maccy D's on OpenZone.
You do pay a lot if you go over the limit however 250 Mb should be enough for more than 250 hours per week of poker (not multi-tabling). If you do get a card ask in the shop for them to remove the 18+ restriction otherwise you may not be able to get on blondepoker!!!! Title: Re: Numpty needs technical help... Post by: TheJagster on February 10, 2006, 06:44:38 AM Oh and good luck with the move!! :D
