Title: Sports question.
Post by: RED-DOG on July 24, 2025, 10:14:49 PM
Which is more difficult, a hole in one, a 147, or a 9 Dart finnish?

I have never had any, would say hole in one is easiest though as many amateur golfers get them everyweekend

147 def. Back when I was playing darts, the good players (won amateur comps) would mostly have had a 9 darter and certainly the first two 180s was not an uncommon occurence in the pub.

Hole in one simply a function of skill level and attempts, I'm sure that someone could compile a table with handicap in one column and expected attempts in the other.

On 147s, even today with more players and clubs, there can't be that many people who have ever done it, certainly in comparison to the other two. I vaguely remember someone saying in the late 70s that they knew everyone in Scotland who had made a century!

Pretty much anyone could fluke a hole in one, potentially although highly unlikely you could fluke a 9 darter with a little bit of skill, whereas nobody is ever fluking a 147. Thus 147 is clearly the hardest and its not even close for me.

OMHO it's the 9 darter. About 70% of the shots in a 147 are bread and butter, black off the spot type shots.

yeah but if asked I'm sure he'll confirm he has also had several 9 darters and 147s, so he doesn't add much to the statistical deliberations.

I'm surprised he's not claimed a Hole In None.

In the World Matchplay last night, & it was Luke Littler v Josh Rock.

It was a treble-fest, & between them, they scored 29 x 180's, 80 x 140's & 146 x 100's.

In one leg, BOTH players threw 6 perfect darts, Littler went 60, 60, 60, Rock went 60,60,60, then Littler went 60, 60, 60 & Rock followed suit, 60, 60, 60. Rock was denied his chance of a 9 darter though as Littler checked out with his next 3 darts for a 9-darter.

There's no way a 9 darter is more difficult than a Hole In One or a 147.

On that evidence then I will change my stance and concede that you are probably right.

I can say that because I am NOT stubborn and obdurate, so you were wrong about that weren't you? Fat boy.

I'm pretty sure I've never said any such thing.

Depends on whether you class a hole in one as skill or luck? Anyone can hit a hole in one(luck)but at the same time skilled professional players can go ages with getting one. It takes real skill to to hit a 147 and a 9 darter(there's no fluking either). 36 perfect shots for a 147 or 9 perfect darts so my thoughts are 147,9 darter then hole in one.

9 darter is way harder than a hole in one

i lost count of the amount of times i hit the flag or lipped the hole ok i never got one in but was close many a time

sit around the club house of a golf course  at a weekend and someone will be buying the drinks every no and then. Even duffers who have trouble hitting the ball can get that perfect 9 iron onto the green and into the hole
for a professional 72 hole comp its 50/50 if a hole in hole is scored each week who can forgot this:

Quote
Famous Betting Coups: The Hole-In-One Gang (1991)
Paul Simmons and John Carter, two Essex men with backgrounds in the betting industry, researched the probability of a hole-in-one being scored in a professional golf tournament. They found that the probability was around 50%, or even money in betting terms. With this knowledge under their belt, they set out to find independent bookmakers who would offer them inflated prices on a hole in one being scored in five different tournaments in 1991. The tournaments were the British, European and US Open, the Volvo PGA, and the Benson & Hedges.

The pair secured prices from 33-1 to 100-1 on a hole in one to be scored at the five tournaments. They also placed a series of doubles, trebles and accumulators at prices much bigger than the true probability. To Simmons and Carter’s joy, at least one hole in one was scored at each tournament. Incredibly, they walked away with over £500,000.

last night was a rarity both players were at there peak for a few legs, in an average pub league there will be ZERO 9 dart finishes a year only the pros and the top amateurs are going to get one.
147s in snooker are very rarer the first televised one was in 1982. I would imagine a number of pros might not have ever secured a 147
