Title: Confused by this move
Post by: Mr F on February 09, 2006, 12:50:23 PM
I'm interested in getting people's opinion on this hand.  My mte has been playing fro much longer than me and swears that it was a good move, but I'm not convinced, I don't have all the information that you probably want but I think there's enough for you to give an opinion.

It was a turbo 45 seater sng on Stars.
He had K 9 off in the BB. 2300 in chips after he put the BB in with the blinds at 50/100.

It was flat called by three people round to him.  He pushed all in.

Now am I missing something here or is this a good move?

I don't have any info on the other players.

It's a fairly standard move.

If everyone limps it suggests no one has a good enough holding to call your all in. I shy away from it when utg or utg +1 limp as they are potentially trapping but generaly it's an easy way to pick up a few free chips. His K9 is unlikely to be drawing dead also so if he gets called all is not lost.

what he said.  I only do this in turbos tho.  plenty of time to wait for better spot in standard tourneys...  i don't like aggresion early on - save that for later when everyone thinks you're tight... just a personal preference tho...

I can't believe I've signed up just to publicly defend my actions against that trouty Mr F.

I am said "mte" who made this move. Allow me to give a little more detail on the hand: The three smooth calls were all from middle to late position, so I had no reason to believe anyone was using the ol' flat-call-utg-with-aces trap. Also, I hadn't made this particular move at any point in the tourney up until this point. The smooth callers had no reason to think that I'd do anything but decline my option and take a cheap flop. I figured the very worst I could be up against would be a low PP that had been cowardly unraised in late position. Oh yeah, and let's not forget this is a 45-man turbo, if you just sit waiting for big PPs you're going to come 34th, FACT.

What makes Mr F so smug about this is that he knows how the story ends. Using his phenomenal power of hindsight, he can safely say I did a dumb thing.

The action folded round to the SB who called with AK. I lost.

Luckily it was only six dollars, and even more fortunate is that it was Mr F's money.

Who's the fish now, Mr "let my ultra loose mate who thinks he knows everything about poker play on my account" F?

Clue: It's you, fishy fishy fish fish.

Okay I've got it out of my system. Nice to meet you all!

Bob

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to like it here.

Been a while since I got addicted to an online forum. Ah the heady days of the student tenpin bowling scene...

Now I must go and add my tuppence to every other semi-interesting thread!

Raising when you think the limpers are weak can be a good move against the right players (i.e. ones who won't realise what you're doing and call with anything reasonable, and ones who aren't so loose to call with anything).

The last time I tried it, I was in the big blind. Under the gun limped in - which he did a lot - the small blind called, and I pushed in with K-6 offsuit. UTG called in a flash with his K-9 offsuit! I certainly picked the wrong spot.

Dont get confused, YOU picked the right spot. UTG is an idiot.
