Title: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Day One, Flight TWO
Post by: tikay on February 09, 2006, 12:50:47 PM

Afternoon alll!

It's clear & sunny here in Deauville again, though very cold.

The second Day one starts in about half an hour, & after some nasty technical problems this morning, we are ready to rock & roll again.

snippy is here, as is Alright Jack, & Royal Flush has talked his way into the Press Centre, so we are all set.

Hi gang.  :hello:

After a slight struggle with tikay's lappie, we're up and running and raring to go.

I believe play commences at 2pm again, but I estimate that it'll be closer to a 2.30 start.

We're joined in the commentary box this morning by Mr Flushy himself, James Dempsey. He's wearing his sheep skin coat and is ready to pass on some pearls of wisdom. hmm...  ::) :D

I had a bit of a kafuffle this morning with the jacuzzi. I spotted a button on the side of the bath and couldn't resist a quick press.

Vooooom! Blasts of air flew out of the holes and the jacuzzi was up and running. I turned on the tap to fill the bath, but sudenly realised that I probably needed to activate the jacuzzi after filling the bath. All the water sprayed up into the air and I had to swiftly turn the tap off before the people below complained of a leak.

Then I pressed the jacuzzi button again, but, to my dismay, this resulted in more air being blowing up. I had no idea how to turn this bloomin thing off! I kept pressing the button but it made no difference.

In the end, I kind of stood there watching on, somewhat naked, and exceptionally perplexed.

After about ten minutes, I decided to press the button again... and voila, it deactivated. Thank God. That call to reception could have been embarrassing. :-*

Anyhow, I plopped myself into the bath and filled it up. Once filled, I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed my bathe.

After a few minutes, the jacuzzi activated again and went right up my exit hole. Completely out of the blue!  :o

Weeeeee!!! I leapt up into the air and started ramming the button again. Luckily, I was able to turn it off immediately.

All in all, a very bizarre start to the day and I entered the casino with a slight limp.  ;tk;

You don't get too many jacuzzis in Brum, so this was my first AND LAST encounter with the bathroom implement...

Our apologies for the fact that the Forum slowed down a tad last night, we had technical "issues", & the Forum was very busy indeed. The Techs have been under the bonnet this morning to see if they can fix it, hopefully it will be better today. The pics, I'm told, "don't help", but we intend to persevere & keep Posting the pics as long as we can.

Part of the problem is the "available bandwidth" at this end, we have a whole bunch og guys using the local Wi-Fi, & some of the guys are video streaming & sending huge "packets" of info, which means all of us are struggling with access speed, but anyway, enough excuses, lets get on with it.

Well, it's 2pm but play is yet to commence.

I've spotted a few familiar faces:

Iwan Jones
Simon Zach (same table as Iwan)
Greg Raymer
Paul Alterman
Dan Samson
Steve Vladar
Carlo Citrone
Jeff Buffenbarger
Mads Andersen (Scandinavian Open winner)
Barny Boatman
Dave Colclough (early!)

I think a few of the stars like to arrive fashionably late.

There is also a feature table being prepared. I still haven't worked out why they don't have one for Day 1A

Afternoon folks!

On my way to the press centre I passed Greg Raymer and Isabelle Mercier sitting at a table ahead of their starts in the event today. I've no idea how their conversation started but this is what I heard...

Greg Raymer (to Isabelle Mercier): "So,a slug is a snail without a shell. Now, the sea cucumber...."

Play has not commenced yet, the players are taking their seats. I will go & find Jen, Dave, Thewy, & all our "faces to follow" shortly.

I have also seen Julian Gardner - now sponsored by Virgin, Neil Channing, Vicky Coren, in a Paradise poker shirt, Rory Liffey, Iwan Jones, Smokin Steve Vladar, & many many others.

And at this very moment, Thomas Kremser announces "SHUFFLE UP & DEAL".

I'll be in meetings all day, but I'll check in when I can to follow the progress of Isabelle, Jen (I feel like I know her after following these updates :)), and John Caldwell. I know Isabelle and Jen are playing today, but I'm not sure about John -- he's the editor-in-chief of PokerNews.com, and a friend from the poker media. (And a really good guy.) If his girlfriend Jen Leo is there, she might be willing to help with updates on his progress. (Tell them that BJ is following your coverage from the U.S.)

Thanks for the great work as always, Blondites!

Boatman flopped a straight with 5-2. Not 100% yet as to what Mateyboy held.

Paul Parker is sat next to Surinder Sunar. Which one is the chattiest?

Ken Lenard is opposite Rob Hollink.

Tann is chatting away with neighbour Channing.

Two totties on the same table. Gundesen and Mercier.

Also spotted Micky 'The Worm' Wernick dressed head to toe in his new Blue Square gear.

I heard from afar the unmistakable vocal tones of Mad Turk.

Hopefully photos to come...

Hi guys,

Not sure if you guys saw this in the other thread so I'll post it again here:

If you can, can you look out for a Mr. O. Hikary for me? I think his first name is Oday but not sure of the spelling. He is a Pokerstars qualifier and I think he's representing Wales. Sorry for the vagueness but I don't have much info.

I understand that you are busy so don't worry about it if you don't have a chance to look.

Cheers,

HS

P.S.

Some more info if it helps. He is in his early 20s and won the Welsh Masters last year.

Don't go out of your way to look but if you happen to stumble upon him can you let me know how he's getting on?

Cheers and good luck to all.

Julian raised to 150 preflop.

Julian bet 300 on the flop.

Raymer reraised to 1000.

Julian made it 3000.

Raymer moved all-in.

Julian called.

Rumours coming through that El Blondie is down to 6k & Thewy is down to 12k, but we are having tech issues right now, bear with us please, we will get the info soonest, & all the rest of the news.

And yes, there is an echo, snoops & I are not sat together today, due to a "misunderstanding" our spaces were not "reserved" this morning, which has caused all manner of problems, so it's pretty hard to know what each of us is inputting.

I will ensure the spaces are correctly reserved tomorrow & Saturday.

Jen is next to Vic runner up and Team Norsemen's Sverre Sundbho. I did give her a wake up call, but it seems she went back to sleep and although she now seems quite perky, she looke decidedly asleep during the first few hands.

Mickey looks calm, cool and collected and is quitely collecting chips while bopping away to his iPod Nano.

Ah right. Sorry I assumed there would be a pleyers list. Don't worry too much about it then. Describing him will be pretty hard. He's meduim build, average hight with short brown hair. Does that narrow it down? Didn't think so. Oh, and he has a Welsh accent. I think there are only two Welshies there so maybe if you heard his voice you might spot him. Like I said, don't worry about it but if you do stumble upon him I wouldn't mind knowing how he's doing.

You're a star.

Cheers.

Julian Thew has had a bit of bother.

He held pocket queens and ran into a flopped set of eights. His opponent, Irish Michael had pocket eights.

Julian down to 7.5k :(

Iwan Jones is up to 19k and happy with his game so far. He just told me about a hand he played against Vicky Coren.

Four players see the flop, which is

3c 3d 4d

VC bets 700, Iwan flat calls with ?. The other two players duck out of the hand.

The turn is Td . Vicky checks saying

"I'll give you a free card to hit your flush"

Iwan bets 1k, Vicky calls.

The river is Kh and Vicky checks.

Iwan bets 2.5K

Vicky thinks for an eternity before passing, declaring she had 99, but not showing.

Due to player confidentiality I will not reveal what Iwan had, but you can have a guess....

I'm trying to count chips from home, but what are the denominations? Is it this?

Green = 25
Black = 100
Red/Purple  = 500
Yellow = 1000

Let me know if I'm wrong ... Isabelle is up to about 12,000?

Go Jen & Isabelle!

Rob Hollink -- 9.5k
Paul Parker -- 15k
Jen Mason -- 14k (she found aces, flopped top set, and had a 2k river bet paid off. Opponent mucked)
Sverre Sundbo -- 10k
Julian Thew -- 5.5k (eek. we need the yoyo to swing the other way)
Dan Samson -- 5k
Surinder Sunar -- 16.5k

Dave Colclough was showing the table aces as I approached. He wasn't too chuffed with the 200 pot he won. He has his head well above water though with 14k)

Thx Moritzey.

If them boys aren't happy with Isabelle Mercier, then snoops (I don't always speak in the third person) will officially give them a yellow card. One more and you're off.

Oday Hikary had 3k at the last break.

If he's a slim lad with short brown hair and a brown cardi, then he's now on 5.6k

Can't seem to find Simon Zach, which is worrying, I'll have another butchers on the next run.

Isabelle up to $40,000? Woo-hoo!

It's refreshing to see her off to a strong start. I hope she can relax, play great poker, and absorb those inevitable bad beats.  :)

FYI, I should point out that I'll be changing my screenname here soon. (But not today.) I have left Card Player to move over to PokerPages, so Rolf will be passing the baton to me to cover next week's World Poker Tour event at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. When I change my screenname, I'll let you know, because I'll definitely still follow your coverage of the European events! (Until the day when I can work alongside you and COVER a European event.)

And Snoops ... That's Hilarious! I hope she wasn't American -- our women are usually more aware of innuendo like that.

Okay, cracking little hand to report now.

Elky, a big online player and somewhat of a table bully, raises preflop.

Jen smoothcalls with 3s 3c.

Flop = Ah Qc 6h

Elky checks, Jen bets, Elky calls.

Turn = 2c

Elky bets 700, Jen reraises, Elky calls.

Bown pants time. (professional term)

River = Qs

Elky checks...

Jen checks (although that river bet must have been tempting)

Jen's threes in fact take the pot. Elky held a missed flush draw.

Phew.

Jen up to 17k.

Wooooo. I predicted a cash finish for the blonde lass. Goooo Jen!  ;cheerleader;

Go Jen! :)

Way to have faith in your threes ... my biggest worry on the river might have been a middle pair for my opponent (like 8-8 or 7-7). Take that $17,000 and make it grow even more!

Great news, it looks like we can abandon the Thunbnails & revert to proper pics, so here we go with the first. This is Elky, against whom Jen just made that daring play. Elky had been making it 750 to go EVERY hand, he's well aggressive. He is a huge online cash player, big reputation, & he was here in Deauville last year, but he had dyed blonde hair then. Men messing with their hair colours, whatever next?

Julian Gardner -- 14k
Martin Green -- 20.5k (although he was more interested in Barny's first hand of the day)
Hawko -- 4k

Talking of Barny's first hand, he hit a straight flush on the turn with 2c 5c

His opponent held top pair Queen with a nut flush draw.

He did infact hit the flush, but didn't realise he'd lost.

Ahh well, I guess he'll turn that into a bad beat story when he tells the Mrs where that 4k went.

Here's Thewy.

Doubled up second hand against Greg Raymer.

Nearly lost the lot with QQ v 888.

Doubled up again with AK against A-4.

He gets more action in a few levels than I get in a fortnight. Shame about that scarf though. He wears it in bed, you know.

Neil Channing is out. He had pocket twos on a 2J3 board. It all went in and his vanquisher held 33...

Willie Tann down to about 3k. He's getting slowly chipped away.

"I getting no hands" he told me.

"Best I see recently is pocket jacks. Flop comes AK9, I have to pass." as he turns away to gently rib a dealer for being lazy.

There was a big yelp, a few people gathered around the table, even Paul Parker couldn't resist finding out what all the fuss was about.

Anyway, 4 spades on board. Mateyboy #1 had made a flush.

Ouch. Like a firm kick in the testicles.

It's tricky to obtain Weed's chip count because he covers his stack with his arms.

I'll bend his ear when he returns.

Hello Guys, Ben here...

I snuck off to kip last night as i too felt dreadful, my kidneys ache, my back hurts, my head hurts and im coughing up all sorts of nasty stuff!

after 18 hours in bed i feel a bit better and hopefullly will stick around until the end today...

Shaa - MadTurk i am informed by Ben Fried is out, he was up to 30k at one point but MadTurk being MadTurk i think he tried to win the tourney on day 1!

We're on a dinner break for the players at the moment so when they all return i will dash out and get some piccy's for you guys, anyone in particular? I've seen a few posts looking for gorgeous men, give me 30 minutes and im sure i can get a few of me up here ;) LOL.

Up amongst the chip leaders currently is a very gorgeous Isabelle Mercier, she is occupying the the seat on the TV table to the dealers right. She has 47k

the players are now returning and will resume in 2 minutes i believe so hold your breath guys....

Ben

Jen Mason is on 16k.

One hand of interest:

Mateyboy raises 800 under the gun.

Jen flat calls.

Flop = 8h 9c Kd

Mateyboy bets 1200.

Jen makes it 2500

My spider senses tell me that Mateyboy has found hi fingers firmly trapped in the cookie jar.

He gives it the oscar winning performance and then folds.

Julian has just folded pocket tens to a raise and a reraise preflop.

Rising from his chair, Jools noticed that the other guy had aces.

On a 7-9-5 flop, Mateyboy #1 pushes all-in.

Mateyboy #2 calls with pocket queens.

Nice escape for Jools.

Limped in with  Td Th under the gun, terminal raiser raised (oooh ahhh), crazy Frenchie calls, all folded back round to Weed who pushed all in.

TR (terminal raiser) passes and CF (crazy Frenchie) dwells and eventually calls showing....

Flop   Ad   Jd  7h  3d 5h

Au reviour la Weed. :( :(

Just a little something from me...

Dave Colclough seems to be down to one move now with his short stack...i saw him push all in from the button on Barny Boatmans blind with AT. After a bit of a dwell Barny passed and DC added another much needed 700 chips to his stack.

Meanwhile Jen doesn't seem to be content with anteing away, she is attacking the table every chance she gets...GO JEN!!!

Anyone know the French word for doctor?

chow for now.

Watched Mickey Wernick for a while earlier on. His stacj jumped from about 19k to 24k and this is how.

Two see the flop, Mickey v Sonny Jim. Missed the preflop betting but Sonny Jim made a smallish raise, which MW called.

Flop

Ts 9s Jh

SJ bets 1,100, Mickey calls.

Turn 8h , Sonny checks, Mickey bets 700, which is called.

River 6d , Mickey bets 2,100. The Jimster calls but nods and mucks when Lord W shows Qh 9h and the 9k plus pot is shipped his way.

The girl in the photo from the "Blogger's Corner" is Jen Leo, a sometime poker journalist, and girlfriend of John Caldwell, editor of PokerNews.com. Unfortunately, John played yesterday, and busted out after the dinner break. But apparently Jen is still helping out somebody with coverage! (I'm envious ...)

DC updates are getting more and more difficult.

There are loads of onlookers standing around the tables when they really should be on the sidelines.

Makes it bloomin hard to get to the other end of the room where DC is located.

Kinda sux really, you either have to push passed a load of folk or make a massive detour.

It wasn't like this yesterday. I'm gonna have to have a quick word with Thomas Kremser.

Rant aside, El Blondie is clinging with 5k.

He's had aces twice, both on the big blind, with neither hands receiving action.

According the blonde one, the bigges pot he's played is 2k.

Must be great viewing on that table!

Dave Colclough asks one or two of you?

Up to around 7k now, & remarkably happy all things considered. He says he is on the tightest table on earth, they have not lost ONE player since the first hand, when Barney bust someone with his straight flush. What Barney was doing Raising the first hand, UTG, with 5-2 is something of a talking point, but it sure was hard to put him on 5-2!

Sp, Dave grinding away, don't be giving up on our Monty, whatever you do. He is sponsored by Littlewoods today, shame his name is not Pauls.

I see Jen's Mum is watching, that's good news, as Jen was gonna send her a Text to say she was having a grand day.

Jen's Mum is quite lovely, as many of you who met her at blonde Bash will testify, and she's not quite as cranky as Jen.

I rung Jen's Mum one day last week & she said "Linda speaking", & she insisted I call her Linda, rather than Jen's Mum, but she's Mum as far as I am concerned. Anyway, Mum/Linda/Lynda/Nice Lady, your Daughter is in great, great, spirits.

Some Simon Zach news...

I had just been to fetch him a glass of water and returned to see him facing a decision for all his chips. There was quite a lot in the pot but Simon had another 15k or so left. His opponent had moved all in on the river with the board of

4h 7d 3h Jc 6s

After quite some time Simon passed and his opponent showed his Ah 2h. I gave him his water and exited swiftly after a conciliatory shrug of the shoulders.

Post by: snoopy1239 on February 09, 2006, 10:57:11 PM
Victoria Coren loses a 30k pot, im afraid to say i wasn't impressed at all by her play....it panned out like this,

Matey UTG raises to 1800 with 300/600 blinds and 75 ante. She re raises out of the SB to 5000, matey calls and we see a flop of T82 rainbow.

Vic checks, matey checks,

turn 7h, still a rainbow board, Vic checks, matey checks.

River 4 and Vic quickly reaches for a stack of chips, of which she didn't count. was about 10k (pot)

matey quickly calls and shows JJ for the overpair, Vic turns over AcKc.

Seemed to me like she had AK and in my opinion she played it badly to leave her just 10k

A shame because her and Jen (who is to her left) have both played solidly in the early levels and now she needs to get busy and regain some chips.

On the brighter side of things Martin Green is the chip leader i believe with 105k, he busted Jan Sorensen with a flopped set of 10's and said to me "i had him on tilt because i just kept re raising him, eventually he got the hump and i took his chips!". Quality Martin, I expect him to do well.

Meanwhile Willie Tann is battling back from the brink of elimation having been down to a few chips for a long period in the tournament he is now on 16k.

Ben Grundy is struggling on 11k and Jen is maintining her 40k stack nicely :):):)

I on the other hand, still feel sick as a parrot and the only thing keeping me going in the buzz from writing these updates, its incredible the atmosphere around here and i cannot wait until we get down to the final stages. Its going to be fantastic, especially if the Brits carry on how they're doing.

Ben

Got it Skippy, but she gets cross if I give it to strange men.

Here's Barny Boatman, and if you have good eyes, you can see Jen on the table behind, & snippy lurking as ever. snippy is as good as gold, I've given him a hard time today, but he just keeps on working & smiling & generally amusing everyone. We need to fatten him up a bit though. How lucky are blonde to have Jen, snippy, Alright Jack, Ben & Flushy all helping out, Tighty & Dingdell weighing in at Luton, Heid ditto at Gutshot, Couch Kev always around to help, Chili in the wings, & others too numerous to mention, all ready to help.

87 runners left, ave stack 25,000, blinds 300-600 with a running ante of 75, 30 minutes left at this level, & 2 more levels before close of play. So how many will survive to Day 2 Proper? Come on, give us your best guess.

Jen just keeps going and going.  I think she runs on Duracell....

UTG big stack has flat callled and Jen makes it 1,500 to go from the big blind.

flop is 2c Jh  Ahrt

Jen bets 2,500. UTG calls

Turn 5s

Jen bets 4,500. UTG slightly decreased stack calls.

River is Tc

Jen checks, UTG bets 5,000.

Jen thinks for like 30 secs then calls.

UTG has Kh 7h

Jen has Kd 2h

Jen's bottom pair takes down a nice pot and she's up to over 50K!!

Burnley John is involved in an STT. Can't these guys take a day off?  ;tk;

Anyway, he said that he has to play to recuperate the losses of his lady friend when she plays an STT. I asked him if that meant I'd have to play after him, and he agreed. Blimey.

You may be able to make out a red curtain in the background. To get to the press room on the stage, you have to go through there. That means passing the crowd of randoms that seem to have ammassed inbetween the tables. Bloomin pain in the backside, especially when both Dave and Jen were sitting down the other end of the room, as people seemed to gather in all spots.

Time to bend Big TK's ear I think.

I believe he is the current Dutch Champion.

Flushy's gotta outlast Dutchman Marc Nalden. Both made it to the second day although I'm not sure is was wise betting on a guy with a hangover. Ahh well, I have faith in Mr Flushy. (cough)

This very well turned out young man, in fulll Wiliam Hill regalia, won his seat by finishing, I think, 15th in the Caribbean Classic. I believe his name is John Hershaw. He was in great shape until his QQ was turned over by JJ, but he's battling on.

What a formidable opponent THIS guy is - Peter Roche. Sits at the table, totally relaxed, laughing & joking, his trendy scarf around his neck, but he's a killer. Don't mess with him.

44 players move into Day 2 to join the other 57.

So, hopefully, we'll be whittling 101 trojans down to a final table of 8.

It's gonna be a hell of a day, especially with the likes of Flushy, Jen, Micky, Burnley John, Simon Zach, Paul Parker, among others all still in with a shot of that huge first prize.

That's about it from me. Thewy has about 65k, Jen 55k, Julian Gardner 99k, Mickey Werrnick 50k, all approx. Full counts will be up before play starts tomorrow, maybe in an hour or two if Mr Kremser gets them to us in time.

Big thanks to snoppy, Jonathan Rabb, Ben, and all of you watching at home.

We had some serious tech issues earlier in the day which freaked me out big time, but we muddled through somehow. To all those I got tetchy with, during the techy problems, I'm sorry.

It's been emotional.

Right gang, time to wrap things up here.

It's been another exhausting day, but it's great to see so many familiar faces returning for Day 2.

I'd personally like to give a huge congrats to Jen and Micky who deserve everything they get. I sincerely hope that both make the final table. I'm not sure you'd be able to wipe the grin off their faces if that happened, but I've predicted big things for both of these peeps this week.

Good luck guys, we're all behind you.  :respect:

Julian? Say no more. This guy's always there or there abouts and it seem this week is no different. Keep going son!  :)up

And that goes for the Day 2 qualifiers too. Flushy, Foxy, Burnley John and co... bring home the bacon for the Brits.

Well, time to clock off for the night.

We'll see you back here tomorrow, please join us, the remaining blondeites would seriously welcome your support.  ;cheerleader;

Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Sorry I disappeared late in the coverage, but my afternoon meetings hit full swing and I couldn't get away for even a moment. :(

Of course, the good news is that the time difference from Deauville, France to Austin, Texas (where I am at the moment) allows me to follow the tournament during convenient daylight hours, unlike all of you Europeans, who are forced to stay up late to keep up.

But both Isabelle and Jen are both going strong, so I'll definitely be back to follow tomorrow's coverage. I am gaining even more respect for Jen after her performance today ... now I want to see both of them at the Final Table!

Oh, and great job on the updates, everyone. Especially considering the fact that Jen was (fortunately) unavailable!
