Title: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: snoopy1239 on February 11, 2006, 01:00:20 PM
Hi peeps.

Well, we're back for the final table and, after a long week, Brits Ram Vaswani and Stuart Nash are still in with a great chance of scooping the €480,000 first prize.

with Isabelle Mercier eliminating Micky Wernick on the bubble, the French lass is looking good (in more ways than one) in 4th position, and could well be lifting the trophy at the end of the day.

The final table chip counts and seating positions are as follows:

(1) Ram Vaswani -- 1,191,500
(2) Isabelle Mercier -- 428,000
(3) Mark Boudewijn -- 911,500
(4) Kirill Gerasimov -- 215,000
(5) Patric Martensson -- 291,000
(6) Stuart Nash -- 125,500
(7) Theo Jorgensen -- 809,500
(8) Mats Iremark -- 397,000

-- Ram Vaswani......1,191,500
-- Mark Boudewijn.....911,500
-- Theo Jorgensen.....809,500
-- Isabelle Mercier.....428,000
-- Mats Iremark.....397,000
-- Patric Martensson.....291,000
-- Kirill Gerasimov.....215,000
-- Stuart Nash.....125,500

And this is what they are playing for:

1st -- €480,000
2nd --  €259,000
3rd --  €155,300
4th -- €118,500
5th -- €97,700
6th -- €76,800
7th --  €60,800
8th --  €43,500

The final is due to start at 3pm.

And as a point of intrest, last night in the 500 1 rebuy event we had a lot of blonde intrest.

Dave Penly ran his AQ into AA for 12th place.

I Know It managed a 10th.

El Blondie himself came 3rd

Thats the time we left but Steve Vladar was headsup!

I'll try and get prize money payouts and more details later.

Would it be possible to have a new picture of Isabelle.
I just wanna see if she looks tired, since you're my eyes.
I'll be glued to Blonde all day, and tell her I'm her  # 1 fan.

Here you go Mrs Mercier. She wrote a message for you, but, due to the bright light, it wasn't particularly legible.

However, I've stepped in with a bit of handiwork.

Hello gang, i am going to run a mini update along side the EPT final, the event in question is the 1000 Euro freeze.

An early look around the room see's Martin Green, John Falconer and Neil Channing on the same table.

Another table of intrest see's Bambos, Smokin' Steve and Willie Tann on the same table. Infact Willie has taken half of Steve's chips and seems in high spirits, i went by a minute ago and Willie was trying to call the clock on himself!!

other names in the field:

El Blondie
Simon Zach
Vicky Coren
I Know It
Noah Boeken
John Hewston
Jeff Buffenbarger
River Dave
Lord Wernick
The Maaaaad Turk

Nem i will try to get the payouts later.

Steve took 34k is all i know and there was no business done.

Bonjour, Surprise!

Rhapsody and I are rooting for Isabelle the best we can from here ... I'm trying to get Rhapsody to focus on the compute screen, but she doesn't understand what's going on yet. I should have packed the photo you sent!

I've got a few more meetings today (yes, on a Saturday) before we drive back to Vegas tomorrow. But I'll be here watching as long as I can. I hope Isabelle can win this thing in a hurry!  :)

(By the way, for those who don't know -- which is pretty much everyone -- Rhapsody is a dog. "Surprise" knows her. :) )

Please excuse the poor quality of the photos. Flash isn't allowed at the final table due to the TV cameras.

Anyhow, here's Compo from Last of the Summer Wine, although I hear he prefers to be referred to as Theo Jorgensen.

Some player info courtesy of PokerStars...

This cool and confident civil enhineering student from Gothenberg is attending his first ever EPT but already believes he has an edge over Ram Vaswani! He graduates this summer and plans to take a year off to play poker as a pro.

The info on Stuart Nash made me smile.

"50-something Brit", "2nd place (€60,000) in the European Poker main event in London"

Well, Stuart is 60, he won 85k at the Vic, and it was pounds!

Doh

Good afternoon Deauville, and by the miracle of internet, everywhere else!  I have only just arrived, having failed to wake up to my alarm after a couple of very long days... but the Extended Blonde Team (EBT - Jonathan, James joining Snoops and Tikay) let me have a lie in for which I am very grateful.

Before I jump in the exciting ring of the TV table and get back to updating (I have a press pass once again) I just want to say a quick Thanks to everyone who was supportive of me yesterday, from Auntie in America to all blonde friends... I have loved every second of this tournament, playing and watching, and I am definitely more  :D than  :(     I have yet to read the lot (and there is a  lot!) but I heard a lot of messages from the Updaters.

What a great experience this has been - Ta bluesquare for the chance to give it a go.  And how supportive is blonde?  Fab.

Anyway, back in the real world of the Press Enclave, people are realising that the lowering of the blinds (10k - 20k to 5k - 10k) is making for a fold-tastic afternoon.  Nothing much has happened since I got here about half an hour ago.  But we have a sneaky entrance stage right so I am going to go and take a look.   ;slavedriver;  Me...

Rhapsody is a mutt like her adopted American father.  :)

Rhapsody's mother was a Bassett Hound, and her father was a German Short-Haired Pointer. She's a pretty unique mix, and aside from her sisters (she was the runt in a litter of five girls), I've never seen another dog like her.

I adopted her from the Atlanta Humane Society, as I was lucky enough to be there the day all five puppies were dropped off. They were all adopted within a day. A trivial note -- Rhapsody was born on the second-to-last day of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She was a "Day 16" puppy. :)

She's logged more miles on road trips than most humans, having driven across the United States many, many times. Right now we're in Austin, Texas, and we drive back to Las Vegas tomorrow. But she'll be watching Isabelle's progress today, and rooting her to victory!

Right. I've had a small wager with Rolf Slotboom. He plumped for Boudewijn, I've gone for Jorgensen. 10 Euros and a lot of pride at stake. I have very little of the latter remaining.

Great stuff, but, not to be rude, I think you should let Rhapsody speak for itself. And see the blonde "Welcome thread" in General Discussion.

Lovely dog though, & lovely story. But let's discuss that across on the General Discussion Board.

Right you are, Tikay!

When is Isabelle gonna win her first big pot at the Final Table?

To tell the truth, the Final is, so far, a rather lack-lustre affair (from a viewers standpoint), & we are just trying to do a sort of Test Match Special, & waffle on while we await some action. Bit like a football match which is 0-0 until the 65th minute, it's surprising how these things can suddenly burst into life.

I fancy Ram will get the action going very shortly......

Mats Iremark has doubled up off Ram Vaswani.

Mats flatcalls from the small blind.

Ram bets 30k from the big blind.

Mats moves all-in.

Ram calls.

Mats = Aspades 6s

Ram = 9d 9h

Flop = 4d 2s 3c

Turn = Js

River = Ahrt

Quite a few outs in the end, but he still had to get lucky to remain in the competition.

The blinds should be going to 10,000-20,000 (2,000) soon, right? It seems like the action should get going sooner rather than later ...

I'm just going by the blind levels posted at the EPT's website. I don't mind those blinds, but I'd feel better about them if Isabelle doubled up three times in a row.  :)

Kirill Gerasimov has doubled up through Ram.

Kirill moved all-in from trap 2.

He found a caller in Ram who held A-Q

Kirill reluctantly flips over K-T

Board = J-3-4

Turn = 5

Kremser announces that Kirill needs a king or a ten to remain in the competition.

River = T

Theo Jorgensen

The former dealer has been playing poker for 14 years, five of them as a professional. Mainly a live tournament and cash game player, his biggest win to date was €100,000 in the 2004 Seven Card Stud European Chamionships. The live tournament specialist lives in Copenhagen with his grilfriend Ivvona and nine-month-old daughter Maya.

He's 33, but I swear he looks about 19.

There has been a late entrant into today's French Open final table.

A young fellow from Bluesville in the West Squarelands has just sat down next to Ram Vaswani.

He is low on chips but looks the part.

Please give him all the support you can muster. I really believe he can take this title and the massive 480k first prize.

I imagine that Isabelle is getting pretty frustrated that all the other short stacks keep doubling up as well. Perhaps she should start willing the big stacks to bust out?

And yes, my comment about doubling up was a demand. Double up again, Isabelle!

(And Rhapsody "barks" in a very American way.)

Deauville was the height of chic during the "Roaring Twenties" ?

This chap also turned up late to today's final.

It's chaos here.

Thomas Kremser took his team to one side to discuss how to deal with these late entrants.

I heard a few choice words...

"Fish"
"Fish"

and er... "Fish"

J Raab from England is now at the table though and has moved all-in.

Watch this space.

Blondeite's Luckyblind has just knocked over one of PokerStars' cameras.

Er... 45k I believe they cost.

I'm not sure what he has on him...

Thank the Lord for insurance!

The THUD was loud enough to attract the PokerStars staff away from the final table.

I saw a showdown!  I saw a showdown!

Mats Iremark raises preflop to 85k, called by Ram.  The flop:  3h Ts Kd.  They both checked.
Turn:  Kh   and Mats decides to have a go, betting 65k, called pretty sharpish by Ram.
River:  Ks  and they both check this unexpected development, which in effect gives Ram the pot with his  4c 4h (full house) while Mats tried to just show the  Qc in his hand, leaving the  8c down.  That wasn't allowed though.

J Raab has doubled up through Ram Vaswani.

Isabelle Mercier congratulated Raab with a long embrace.

The hand went as follows:

Raab = 7c 2d

Vaswani = Aspades Ac

Flop = Ks Td Ad Jd 4d

Raab shoots up the ladder and is now a force to reckoned with.

I may have to pinch him soon.

Snoopy and his merry band of men (read fish) are having an extended lunch and have missed Isabelle's exit. All in preflop with 99 vs AK she lost the race to Mark Boudejwin who hit an Ace on the turn. 7th place for Ms Mercier.

Now there is a clash of two Swedes, the low-stacked Mats Iremark stakes his sll on 7-7, & the almost as low-stacked Patrik Marttensen decides it's his chance to get back in the game, & does his duty to call the short-stack lunger, Patrik shows K-T. The first card is a 7, & that's Mats doubled through, & Patrik now in deep poo.

Patric Martensson is OUT in 6th place -- winning €76,800

And Patrik is no more, he defiantly moves in next hand, Ram decides it's his turn to do the defensive duties & calls with a bag of spanners, but in the bag was a 6, & with no less than THREE sixes on the Board, his Quads are more than enough to dispose of the plucky & deceptively good Patrik, who has a great record in EPT's this year.

As we suggested earlier, it's strange how often a drab & dour contest can suddenly spring into life, & that's sure happened here.

I'm not suggesting any sort of Dinner Break Deal was done, in fact I know it was not, but now they are playing.

We met Ram in the little Pizzeria across the road during the Dionner Break, & he admitted that it was tough to get any action going, but he intended to "stoke the fires" when play resumed. Well the fires are certainly blazing now, & maybe Ram will wish that the pre-Dinner calm would return, because he was clearly Table Captain then, but it's anybody's game now.

Sorted Tom, sorted. Isa is in here with me right now, & I've just shown her the pic of BJ's (CardplayerBJ) Dog, Rhapsody.

Isa is a bit glum, but given her stack, the exit hand played itself. "If that A never turned, I 'ave 900,000 & I am in good shape". "If", the poker players lament.

She has no interest in the fact she beat 400 odd other players, only that she failed to beat the last 6, but she says she intends to do the business in Monte Carlo.  blonde wish her well.

Funny Hat (sorry, forgot his name) Raises, Kiril gives him a mean stare through those shades, & says "Re-Raise". While Kiril is figuring out how much to Re-Raise, Funny Hat grabs a huge chunk of Orange Chips from his stack in intimidatory fashion, looking for all the world like he is going to Re-Re-Raise Kiril if he dares Re-Raise, cutting a huge stack with great dexterity, & giving Kiril a wicked look while nonchalantly chewing away on his trademark toothpick.

But Kiril could eat this boy for breakfast, he's seen all these tricks before, & he don't back down, the kids tricks don't phase this ruskie. - "Re-Raise 100k". At which, without any dwelling, acting or posing, Funny Hat, to his credit, instantly mucks. Classic stuff! Now we are watching some REAL poker!

Wow, sensational stuff now, biff bash bosh or what? & none other than Ram is in the thick of it.

Ram Raises, Funny Hat moves all-in, is this a tilt Raise, or does he really have the goods, but no matter, he's made his statement, now dare Ram call?

Ram dwells for a good while, he's gonna pass I think, but NO - "CALL" he whispers, & he clearly thinks Theo Funny Hat is at it, as Ram shows the weakish A-J, although Theo "only" has around 300k at a guess. And was it a tilt R by Funny Hat? J-J, no less, the last hand Ram wanted to see, he'd drawing to 3 outs.  No drama on the Board, Funny Hat doubles through, & Ram is given a slap in the chops.

The chip geography has altered  dramatically - we will get some accurate chip counts at the imminent break.

Kiril is really starting to look the class act of this Table. There were two to begin with - Ram & Kiril, if we are talking World-Class, now there is one. Be afraid.

Jen has Posted Ram's Exit Hand, but her Wi-Fi Connection has gone all wonky, so be patient please. But subsequent to his AJ v JJ black eye, Ram got dealt the killer blow by his Russian foe.

Ram Vaswani is the 5th place finisher for €97,700

Just as we returned from dinner (not as much wine as Tikay would have you believe) the action has continued, with another couple of pushes all-in.  The first, Mark moving all-in over the top of Theo, went uncontested, but Ram's all in on the next hand found Kiril moving all-in behind him...

Ram:  Kh 8s
Kiril:   Ad Js

And the board came out:  5s 6d 9h 3h 6c, with no pair (or 7) coming to Ram's rescue.

The contrast pre/post dinner is extraordinary - they must have all made the decision "No more folding for me!" while they ate in the lovely buffet, or, in Ram's case, the little Italian next door with plentiful less costly pastas and pizzas.

Just caught a hand from the 1000 Euro event.

All-in preflop, Mateyboy #1 v Mateyboy #2. (Mateyboy squared)

AQ v KK

Flop comes two aces.

The Mateyboy leaps up into the air, cheering, high-fiving his mates, and genuinely being obnoxious.

Next card?

King

Bang.

His shoulders sink and the audience start laughing at him.

Instant karma I guess, but it's nice to see the arrogant players getting their comeupance now and then.

Mats Iremark      869,000

Mark raises from the button.

Short stack Theo pushes from the small blind and Mark calls with 6h 2h.

Theo has A-A and holds up to double through.

Kiril doubles up with a rather fortunate  Ac 4s vs  Ahrt Th.  A four fell on the flop, which meant that the Ace on the turn made a second pair for Kiril and he took a double up in the form of around 600,000 - definitely enough to play with.

Theo Jorgensen is OUT in 4th place -

Mats raised under the gun to 150k, but it was Mark Boudewijn who moved all-in with short-stacked Theo taking a shot at a double up with his  9h 6h.  Mats got out of the way and Mark's  Ad Qd looked good, especially with a  5d 8d Jh flop.  The flush didn't come, however, but two blanks did leaving Mark adding a couple more hundred thou to his stack and they are down to three-handed.

There has been no announcement of the deal, but it may well be the case.  The advertised prize for fourth was €118,500... not bad anyway.

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 11, 2006, 11:48:05 PM
Now Kiril Gerasimov finishes in 3rd place, winning €155,300 -

It's all sped up now, with a heads up between 19-year-old green hooded player Mats Iremark, and quiet Mark Boudewijn (who has been Rolf Slotboom's pick of the final, incidentally - I think Snoops might have lost yet another bet).

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: AlrightJack on February 11, 2006, 11:52:49 PM
I suspect the real reason they have done a deal is because they can't concentrate due to the thumping base from the disco next door.

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 11, 2006, 11:53:12 PM
Kiril's exit hand was  Kd Td, which found Mats with  Ad Jc.  Both the Ten and the Ace hit the flop, but with no improvement other than the board pairing threes, Mats' two pair beat the Russian's.  Going to hover with my camera ringside now...

As far as the heads up action so far goes, Snoops brings word of a pot taken down on the river by Mats (with a 250k bet) but there was no showdown.  There was something Mats liked about the  3h Kc Tc Qh 7s board though....

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day

Now the chips are weighed in favour of the youngster - we reckon about 2,900,000 to Mark's 1,500,000.  Here's Mats Iremark with his wall of chips.

Post by: Djinn on February 12, 2006, 12:14:10 AM
And, by the way, those photos aren't blurry, they're just flashless action-shots - both of their hands are just so busy chip-twiddling or betting that they are fuzzy round the edges....

Snoops brings this fascinating hand:

Mats' sizeable 240k bet preflop resulted in an actual flop coming down of  2d Tc 4h.  Mark checked, Mats bet 300k and he folded.  That is quite a lot of chips, now that I think about it, actually.

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: snoopy1239 on February 12, 2006, 12:18:00 AM
It's pretty tight stuff at the moment. Very cagey, but Mats has the slight edge and seems to have the edge over his opponent.

A big hand turns the chip-lead tide towards Mark  - -

The turn sees the betting kick off with the board:  Td 7s 5s Qc.  Mark bet 120k, was check-raised to 400k by Mats, and called.  The river was the  7h, and Mats immediately came out betting half a mil in chips.  Mark almost as quickly said, "All in" and Mats passed his hand, and the lead over to his opponent.  At least they aren't hanging around over these big decisions - it's not all raise-dwell-fold stuff.  A die-hard crowd is still hanging around in the spectator stands, but not so many that we can't get a seat to watch the action from.

Mats Wins With Rags News Now -

The flop was seen with 2 5 J on it (two clubs).  Mats bet 80k - call.  The turn, K, on which Mats called a raise.  The river - 6.  Now they both check, and Mats'  6c 2h two pair is good!

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day

Massive hand.

Mats raises 160k preflop.

Mark reraises 600k.

Mats flat called.

Flop = Jc 9s Qs

Mark moves all-in. Mats calls.

Mats = Qh Th

Mark = Aspades Jd

Turn = Ks

River = Qc

Mats is now a huge chip leader.

Looks like it's going to be over pretty soon...

hope so... because I wanna play some cards and kick some ass!!!

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT, Deauville - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 12, 2006, 12:49:47 AM
As expected, Mark makes an all-in move preflop (he was knocked down to less than 200k) and gets the call....the press all rushes to the stage with the little notepads we've grown to both love and hate...

Mark:  Aspades 8s
Mats:   Ac Qc

The flop is perfect for the short stack:  8d 6s  9s, and the turn and river  6c 4d.  So a little double up for Mark Boudewijn, but still short...

I didn't get a chance to catch up until late evening here in the States, but I finally finished reading everything post-Isabelle. It seems like the action really did speed up ... where was that when she was staying alive?

I was rooting for a fifth-or-higher finish so Isabelle could claim the title of highest-finishing female on the European Poker Tour. But still, the 60,800 Euros she won equals about $72,300 or so, making it the biggest tournament prize of Isabelle's young poker career. Not bad!

It's just one more step up the ladder. Her first $100,000 victory shouldn't be far off, and then her first $1,000,000 victory. And yes, I do mean her first. :)

Great reporting, everyone. I'll check back during the next big European event. If Isabelle is there, I'll be here. :)

Just a few words on Ben - aka Sunday@8pm. Came across to Deauville, worked his socks off for blonde, despite being ill all week. Great Updater too - LOVES his poker with a passion, very knowledgeable too. The Final was a dull affair for the most part, but he sat in the stands & watched every hand.

A true blondeite, and a very special one too. We owe him a favour, & we will not let him down when the time arrives.

Top bloke, truly.

Thanks Ben.
