Title: WSOP or family....? Post by: winkie on February 13, 2006, 03:18:45 PM OK guys… I have a dilemma…
I would really like to play in the WSOP main event this year (wouldn’t we all…!) But before I even attempt to qualify in online satellites, I noticed it coincides with my dad’s 60th. The problem is my dad wants to spend his birthday back home (which for him is Hong Kong). That means he wants my mum, sister and myself there too. Question is…. WSOP or family? (Note: I spent a week in Hong Kong in November last year, so have done the whole family thing very recently…) Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: mikkyT on February 13, 2006, 03:31:13 PM Families gota come before poker... but this is only a birthday, whereas the main event is the main event! Maybe if pop was sick, you shouldnt go. It depends how important it is to your father I guess. Talking it over with them is going to be the only right thing to do. Might even get him to go with you instead
Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: peeveen on February 13, 2006, 03:41:39 PM Sixtieth birthday, tho. That's tough. I think the rules say that you have to be there.
On his sixty-first, however, send a box of Quality Street and a postcard from Vegas. Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: matt674 on February 13, 2006, 04:20:10 PM only one winner here for me - WSOP.
saying that i dont have any family so i dont have much of a decision here!! If i were in your shoes i'd probably play the satellites first and see how you get on, if you dont win a seat then you go to the party with your family and they are none the wiser. If you win a seat then good luck in breaking the news to them ;) Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: winkie on February 13, 2006, 05:02:02 PM Thanks for the replies guys.
Will probably do what matt suggested and start playing a few WSOP qualifiers. And if my luck's in, I'll tackle the parents at a later date... (note to self: good luck with this!) Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Gilbern74 on February 13, 2006, 05:14:09 PM Hong Kong's very tempting. Was there in September. I'll go in your place and send your best wishes with a bottle of plonk from duty free.
Just pay for my flight 8) Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Bongo on February 13, 2006, 05:26:03 PM I really can't see how there could be any choice here, the WSOP is on every year, your Dad will only be 60 once.
Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Indestructable on February 13, 2006, 05:43:34 PM What a nice young man Bongo is!
For me it is WSOP and I think most dad's would live off "my son is playing in the World Series of Poker" for a while. Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: matt674 on February 13, 2006, 06:13:44 PM trouble is unless they move the WSOP then you're going to have the same problem every year!!
59, 60, 61 - they're all the same, once you get past 40 you stop celebrating them (for me it was 21) Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: The Truth on February 13, 2006, 06:21:33 PM family
Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Tonji on February 13, 2006, 06:24:32 PM How about winning 2 seats & takin your pops. Problem solved. Easy. Good Luck.
Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: GlasgowBandit on February 13, 2006, 06:35:26 PM WSOP for me. Its hardly as if 60 is a major milestone.
18, 21, 40, 50 next milestone IMO is the Full Centuary. Tell your Dad youd love to go but this opportunity if you qualify is just too big to knockback. I mean imagine you finnish in the cash in Vegas youd be able to buy your dad the best present ever. Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Bongo on February 13, 2006, 07:03:59 PM It seems as though it is a big milestone for winkie's dad - he wants to goto Hong Kong for his birthday with his family. If he does this every year then fair enough, but it makes me think that he thinks this is a special occasion and wants his family there with him.

Have to totally agree!! Hurting ya fathers feelings over a game of cards is a no no for me You play poker anytime you like and the main event will always be there. Wish him :birthday: from me. Vegas and Birthdays, there is a coincidence there. Make another family holiday of it! Best Regards Steve Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: Solver on February 13, 2006, 09:40:28 PM My advice is do the family thing and sort out the WSOP next year.

Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: thetank on February 14, 2006, 05:42:46 AM I don't know your dad but as a generelisation it's very rare that men of that age express a preference for anything much at all.
That he has asked for you all to go to Hong Kong would suggest to me that it is important to him. What Dingdell said is spot on, it's just a game of cards at the end of the day. If it were my Dad, I'd pick Hong Kong every time, but it's your desicion. You'll know how important/not important it really is to him and can choose from there. Title: Re: WSOP or family....? Post by: winkie on February 17, 2006, 11:33:20 AM Spoke to my dad last night... and it looks like he might not be going after all.
Was reviewing flights and hotels for him on the net yesterday, and because he wants to go during the school summer holiday, it's expensive! So... watch this space as I try to qualify for the WSOP... This question has probably been asked before... what's the best online qualifying route? Best package offered, most fishes etc...? |
