I think you'll need to turn off auto update tunes and playlist to manually update tunes and playlists.

I don't think you can disable auto update in itunes without an ipod connected!!
So you may have to transfer them from your old computer to the new one.

there is software available at http://www.ilounge.com/ that can get your music of your ipod.  Can't remember what the one I have used before was called I'm afraid but a quick look about or an ask in the forums will see you right :)

I can't fookin switch mine on, it keeps making dodgy clicking sounds when I do.

Haven't been arsed to take it back to Dixons and say "Oi" for about a month, but really should. Maybe I will tomorrow. Hmmmmm

switch off the auto-update/synchronize thing in iTunes, otherwise your ipod will get blanked when you connect it.
then get yamipod, which is a nice wee prog to get music back off the ipod.
just bought an ipod recently, dunno how i lived without one so long.

While we're on the subject, is there any way to equalise the volume on mp3's that I download on to my player so that I don't have to keep adjusting it during playback?

Yes, in itunes you go to " get info" and increase the volume to 150%

I don't have itunes, I just drag and drop to my player which comes up as "Removable memory F"

I have a program called "goldwave" that does exactly what u want Tom - equalizes ALL tunes to the SAME volume

But surely the music you are downloading is legal, and therefore would be at the same volume no?!?  ;goodvevil;

The best software for thsi is called PodUTil.

You can use the free download if you wish, although have to keep clicking "OK" or buy it for about $10 which i did. superb bit of kit and the best on the market IMHO
