Holdem has really taken off in my local over the last couple of months and there is normally a game on whenever theres four or more people who want to play.  We normally stick in a tenner and the top two get paid, second usually gets the buy in back.  Players are normally pissed but it is a good laugh. 

The problem is that most of the guys who play, IMHO, know how to play but don't really understand the game if that makes any sense.

I often find myself in with a premium hand that will get called all the way to the river no matter what cards the other person has and they get lucky.  They don't respect raises, they seem to have no knowledge of pot odds etc.  I actually had someone ask me last night why I folded preflop when there were still five cards to come.

So if anyone can give me hints as how to beat a game where people will call and raise with anything just in case they get lucky I'd appreciate it.

Apart from waiting until you've got the nuts every hand there isnt really much you can do. This is why i prefer to play in a game where the players have some basic grasp of the game.

How can i figure out what my opponent is doing if they dont know themselves??

Best thing to do is wait until you've got as good a hand as possible depending on your blind structure and hope that it holds up....

BIH used to be my local.

Never been next door during the day honest guv and there much better than the ones in the Halfway house from what I heard.  Used to go on weekends for the music, used to have some really good bands on back in the day. 

How long ago were you in Wycombe then?  My ex's dad drinks in the BIH all the time, is mates with the landlord I think so I know a few who drink in there.  I'm on the opposite side of town myself drink in the KGV.

Don't raise pre flop without big premium pairs.

Limp a lot and when you make a big or nut hand milk em dry.

Sounds like my home game! I think the best way to play is to keep the raising preflop to a minimum unless you have a monster then push it very hard. Play lots of drawing hands and generally limp in, not very aggressive I know and I would never usually advocate playing this way but when people wont fold you need a hand to win simple as that. Dont reraise with draws (even 14 out ones) cos you WILL get busted by someone who cant fold second pair. It took me quite a few weeks to develop a winning strategy for these types of players and things like raising to narrow the field , or to define your opponents hands is a waste of chips. You always get paid off tho which is nice . Forget about bluffing in these games too. If you have a made hand that you want to protect then you generally have to massivley overbet it.

i wish i'd had these tips last night... i played an 8 seater with some chaps in my rugby club... they are all completely pants, but I found I kept getting caught by people chasing draws on the river... argh!  The thing is, I'm sure I lose more in these games against complete beginners than i do in the lower limit games on line.  It's strange, because they're making more mistakes (in terms of calling with no odds) in these home games, but they don't seem to pay off over time.  very frustrating, but great fun trying to put them on hands!!

SOmething tells me that getting internet access over there will be more expensive than the booze, not that I'll be drinking much.  Am gutted I'll be missing it, but when he starts getting comped tickets to Vegas for his loyal fans I know where I'll be!!

Seriously though Rod I have actually cut down on me drinking.  Generally only one night a week now.  Honest

I've cut down as well.... no drink before noon on a weekday.

And only drink on days with a Y in the name??

BTW if I want to drink earlier the pub next to my flat is open for a pint at 9 am  :D
