Title: To call or not to call
Post by: Canuck on February 20, 2006, 09:55:55 PM
Freezeout last night

Blinds are 100-200. My stack is 7500 after starting with 8000

Aspades Kh on the button, 4 limpers. I raise to 1000. Blinds fold...1 caller

Flop is  3s  7s  9s. He checks. I bet 2000. He reraises all in. It would put me all in.

Do I call? I am curious to get some responses.

I think you're priced into calling here, you've only got 4500 chips and there's 9400 chips in here already. If he has a set then good luck to him and you still have outs, if he just has an overpair then aces and kings can help you to.

I'd probably call too but I would be very worried he'd already made his flush.

I would fold. I put the player on trips which means you're 70/30 dog. I don't think he has an over pair as he would've raised PF. If he has the flush already you're 75/25 dog.

You have plenty chips left if you do fold here.

If he's made his flush already then he would really have to bet it.

I think a set is the most likely of any hands here.

It kind of depends on who the player is and what read you have on that player.  Some players at Cincin's will limp/call a raise with such a wide range of cards that its impossible to say what they may have, and some players will check raise you with only top pair!

You are almost priced into calling against anything, but then again its a tournament not a cash game so your not forced into gambling here.  I think i'd fold as there's still plenty of play with 4500 and blinds at 100/200.

i think once youve put that money in the pot you have to call, your best hope is that he has top pair with a high spade giving you any spade ace or king

This is a tourney right?

Well you have over 20xBB left which is plenty to play with.

Whatever the guy has, you are 100% behind

In tournament play, you want to "protect your stack", no need to "risk" your tournament on a marginal situation

I personally would have checked behind him for this very reason.

I agree totally M3Boy. I should have checked. Because I was the original raiser and I had the nut flush draw I thought I could take it down with the bet of 2000 or if he calls get another spade. I never thought he would reraise.

I folded and he showed the  7s  9s.

The dealer later told me I would not have hit. I know that doesnt matter but it was nice to know.

I had 4500 left which was more then enough.

Unfortuantely I bubbled in 4th.....damn

Canuck, learn from it and remember this situation when it happens again and bingo!! You've just improved as a poker player (something we ALL do)

I would have folded but much would have depended on the player and whats ort of moves he had made previously, I wouldn't risk my chip stack on a draw.

It really would depend who it was at Cincins....honestly there is such a wide variety of players there , they could almost be holding any two cards in the deck.

M3Boy is spot on with his advice. This is the major hole in my game I am trying plug - bascially "stop putting my tournament life on the line with marginal shite". Maybe I should copyright it  8)

As a natural gambler, it is a very difficult instinct to supress. Going to get some wave music for the old ipod and try to stay calm....

.....just to continue this theme - for a while there I thought i was being terribly unlucky - blaming "bad timing" for when I was making my moves - but then the revelation hit me that there isnt a good time to play "marginal crap"....

sorry for rambling, but this is very therapeutic...

am i missing something here?  7s 9s on flop yet you fold and he shows  7s 9s is this a 2 deck tournament?
obviously a mistake but could you let us know what he was really holding  7c 9c?  8s Ts?
cheers
