Title: Did I do anything wrong?
Post by: TightEnd on July 01, 2005, 02:32:40 PM
Final of a live comp, seven players left

I raise from mid position with AcQc, get two callers, the BB and an original limper

flop Kc 3c 8s

The nut flush draw

it's checked to me acting in position, I take the free card

turn 7c, giving me the nut flush

the BB bets out (bingo) and the limper folds

At this point I consider raising but decide I will flat call and raise on the end

However first I decide to ask the dealer to tell me how much is in the pot and how much it is to call and then dwell making it look as if I am calculating pot odds for my flush draw

I then call

the river is not a club, it's checked and I put out a reluctant bet of about 1/4 the pot to make it look like I am betting a busted flush draw

BB raises and then I re-raise...he calls for all his chips with K7 offsuit (awful call preflop, awful checking top pair on flop but thats not the point here), losing with two pair.

I am then loudly berated by two players for bad manners in asking the dealer to tell me the pot size when I have already made the nut flush

Another player tells me afterwards that I was clever

I would like to know if anyone thinks the play of asking the dealer was "bad form". If so, I will refrain from doing it again, as I want to win fair and square not by behaving unsportingly. If not, I will continue this type of trap!

I see your actions as perfectly reasonable & normal.

I think that's very good play and, in my opinion, you did everything right.   :)

You are entitled to enquire about the size of the pot when it is your turn to act. There are a few reasons why a player may wish to do this. You say that you put in a bet of about a quarter of the pot size (This is one of the reasons a player might enquire at the end of one round in order to use the information in the next.) Bluffing a strong hand is an essential part of the game, and so is its opposite 'Representing weakness'. Totally acceptable within the rules and spirit of the game.

What is bad manners and unacceptable, is the behaviour of the two players.

You are NOT allowed to criticise another players method of play... it is extremely bad etiquette. They in WRONG, you in RIGHT.

Nightfly, thank you. Wish I had had the presence of mind to roll your speech out!
