Title: Was this a wise call or a silly gamble.....?
Post by: Gilbern74 on February 22, 2006, 11:29:23 AM
This was a turning-point hand for me last night. 14 players left and I'm chip leader, short-handed tables.
I'd been fairly aggressive as chip leader and stolen a lot of blinds. Moorcash_ had seemed fairly tentative in betting throughout, so I put him on a high pair or AK or possibly trips.........
I couldn't stop thinking about this particular hand after the game, and even first thing when I woke up this morning....it pretty much sewed the tourno up for me as I was miles ahead after this hand.

So was I right to call under the circumstances, or if I had lost the hand would it be seen as a stupid call?
And did Moorcash_ play the hand right or was he foolish to go all-in?

His overbet got you calling!

It's still an easy fold though, you're gambling 75% of your chips whilst CL on just 7 outs. If you had been SB and raised with QJ, and with that flop then there would be a case for going all-in first. (Though if he'd been BB and had AK, he'd have probably re-raised you all-in and you'd have to fold). Even if he doesn't have a made hand, he might have something like  Ahrt Qh and you're drawing very thin.

I think he has played the hand strangely, he has limped from the SB with  Ac Kh, then after u have raised from the BB, he has flat called again, at this point he should be re-raising heavily, maybe all in a putting on the pressure, u cant call an all in at this point so he would take it down, or even a tricky call for u if he raises healthily. In saying that he has allowed you to see the flop cheaply, and as a result has made it difficult for himself. He has hit his K, and by moving all in, seems a slight bit of fear, confusion and panic. Personally I think your call is very bad, granted u need chips to win tourneys, but this guy is the only one that can do u heavy damage, u arent getting odds to call his all in on such a risky draw, u lose this pot and u are crippled. As for him going all in, its a dangerous board, so he doesnt want any drawing hands, so has protecting it best he could, however if u lay it down now, he wins a small pot, his question should be, why the hell didnt I re-raise as he would have picked up the same amount of chips pre flop.

Personally I think the hand was played quite badly by both, he nearly rescued the situation with the all in, which personally I dont think u should have called, but u got lucky and went on to win so fair play to you.

I think thats a terrible call.
Far to many chips drawing to to few outs that may already be dead.

I am amazed lately by the amount of people who will happily call all ins with up down straight draws, of course being first into the pot the play can be justified but calling?

Harder to win tourneys as you have to dodge lunatics on a number of occasions who will call in these bad situations.

Thanks guys,
I agree - the more I look at it, the more I know I should not have called it. I'm sure I'll remember this next time I'm in the same situation.
The loss would have put me well back down the rankings and being chip leader by a way already, I didn't need to do this at all.

However, one point to back me up a bit which I forgot to mention - this guy had gone all-in after the flop on about 4 of the previous 10 hands. I think this gave me a gut-feel to go for it. He wasn't interested in raising, just all-in's.
But I should wait until I have a monster/nuts before playing his game.

Consider it a lesson learnt. The only way is forward!   8)

Wow if you did that to me it would have led to me losing my chat privilege. ;technophobe;
You FISH!!!!!!!! but at least you know it, lesson learned eh  ;)
sometimes you have to gamble but that was too loose and too wild. There was even two hearts on the flop which potentially removes two of your outs. It's shocking really, well done  :D :D

I have changed into my camel-hair shirt and have been whipping myself with dry thorny twigs.

I now know the difference between a right call and a wrong call     :D :D

This Fish is no longer a tadpole  :D  :blonde:

Well to be fair he did massivally overbet the pot and deserved a good spanking himself. When you called he must have thought trips at the very least. he must have been fuming but he did make a strange bet.... so gl to u

BAsed on the fact that he had gone all in 40% of the times in previous hand and didn;t seem interested in betting he gave you an excuse to call.  However I think itw as a bad call.  Especially as you had him on trips/high pair.  You put the majority of your chips at risk on a draw and that was bad play.

That said thats the sort of stupid thing I start doingw hen I come up against all in bets online.
