Title: Our Jen - Pokerist Extraordinary
Post by: tikay on February 25, 2006, 02:58:24 PM

I'm all behind, as Red never tires of telling me, but I must just Post a bit about our Jen's quite breathtaking performance in the Unusual Suspects affair.

The strarting line up, many months ago, included POTY Lord Micky Wernick, Joe Grech, Stuart Nash, At-It Bradley, Burnley John, J P Kelly - said, justifiably, to be the best young UK prospect - Royal Flush, & World Heads Up Runner-Up Simon Nowab. Try & spot the fish in THAT line-up!

They played Main Events for 3 or 4 months - I dunno how many, but 7 or 8 at a guess. They played online comps - maybe half a dozen - & they played maybe a dozen heads up matches.

We can all get lucky in best of 3's, even I could beat Monty Burns best of three if I got really lucky (like he failed to turn up), but over 20 or more games, including Live, Online & Heads-Up, the winner has to be pretty good.

When it got to the sharp end, they all trooped off to Helsinki for a truly World-Clas field. Jen went deep into Day Two. She would never make an excuse, but she was dog-tired on Day Two, & I think fatigue done her.

Then it was Deauville - anothyer huge field, another World-Class field, & we all know what happened there.

Finally, Walsall, and a spine-tingling climax, where everything was on the line, & many a strong nerve woulda failed. She held her nerve to win by a short-head.

This Lady can't arf play! Camel backed her a long time ago, so did a few others. She will go a long way in poker. You had better believe it.

Parallel with this, in the last month, she has suffered some traumatic domstic grief, as her close friends know. (Please don't ask). It has been THE most awful time for her privately, yet she still got the job done. Some special Lady, eh? Lets hear it for Jen.

And can she get the job done in Monte Carlo? Who knows, but she has as good a chance as any. We will be there, Live Updating her from start to finish, & I know the blondes will cheering on her evey move. And I do mean "move", this girl has more moves in her than you could ever believe.

I fully expect the sponsorship offers to arrive soon, & we will continue to support her for ever. It may mean, I have to say, thaet we won't see as much of her in the Live Update Team as we would wish, but hey, she is one of us, always will be, & whatever fate decides for her, blonde will always love jen.

A word also about the runner-up, James Dempsey, aka Royal Flush. Flusjy is direct, blunt, sometimes rude, but you just would not believe what an absolute Gent he has been throughout this event, & how well he handled himself in what must have been a bitter defeat for a proud & ambitious young man.

Before the Final Heads-Up Match - Flushy v Jen - he said to me "tikay, if I miss out & lose, I want to go to Monte Carlo to support Jen, can I perhaps help with the Live Update?".

Yes Flushy, you can. It will be our pleasure to have you on board to watch Jen strut her stuff.

How lucky are blonde to attract some great peeps, eh?

Jen's performance was nothing short of stunning, I think it's just a matter of who snaps her up first

I'm all behind, as Red never tires of telling me

I was trying to think what your @rse reminded me of, then I remembered a parcel van that crashed on the A5

A few words on my colleague, Jennifer 'Mrs Merton' Mason.

I can't say in words how pleased I am for Jen. She wants to succeed in this game so much that this opportunity is a truely substantial step for her.

Also, seeing off the likes of Flushy, JP, Joe Grech, and At-It, is a remakable feat. She should be immensly proud of her performance, as those around her clearly are. Genuinely impressive accomplishment, whatever happens in Monte Carlo.

We all know she can play, she showed that in Deaville when she bubbled. In fact, I think she may be underrated as a player. She tends to get bigged up quite a lot, but it's fully deserved, Sometimes when a female player is highlighted as a decent player, it's usually because of their gender if anything else, but Jen truely IS a top notch competitor.

I predicted a cash finish for Jen in Deauville, and I was almost proved right. I see no reason why she can't reach this goal in Monte Carlo, and I fully believe that she can win the whole bloomin thing, nevemind cash.

Those millions await you Merton, good luck. We'll all be there to be support you.

A sensational effort from Jen and I would like to add my congratulations as another one of those proud to know her

I think she is one of those people who rises to whatever challenge is put before her...I'm fully expecting a few more spine tingling moments and a great showing in Monte Carlo....

I agree totally Tikay,

it can't be easy for a woman to be such a presence in such a male dominated sport. She really does know how to beat around the big boys

Was great to meet Jen in Deauville, i have one regret though, i didn't get an autograph :(

Best of Luck Jen, maybe see you there.

Ben :)

Oh yes, the Lady is something else.

If I were asked to name my top ten happiest poker memories, I would have to include shooting the breeze, usually over a meal, with Jen, after a Live Update, as we have done many times. After Updating in Vegas for 16 hours straight, 6 days in a row, we'd adjourn to The Orleans, & chat over brekkie for hours. Ditto in Paris, on Pavement Cafe's on the Champs Elysses, she is THE most amusing person, & incredibly - & I mean incredibly - sharp & intelligent, the most fascinating conversationalist I have ever met. They need to preserve her brain & mind, because her head is just all over the place, she's utterly mad you know.

She was well-educated for Poker - A Degree at Oxford in Classical Languages of all things - so heaven knows why she speaks & writes in such an odd style, making up words willy-nilly, but you know what she means, & the construction of her sentences leaves me gasping for air at times.  Unique truly unique.

Youi KNOW she means the PA system when she refes to "the voice in the sky", you just do!

When she went to Oxford, she got homesick after 3 weeks, so she came back home, & commuted dowen to Oxford once a week for her seminar or whatever they call it, then trundled back home. And she still got her Degree!

Home these days is what amounts to a commune in Hampstead, with the equally dotty Dana, but they were made for each other, both nutty as fruitcakes. Money & material possessions mean nothing, & when I asked her when she intended to pack up messing about in poker & get a proper job, she said "never, I wanna do this for the rest of my life".

Dress sense? Don't go there. I've seen her in a dress once, & she looked a fish out of water. She has the worst pair of shoes you ever saw - she freely admits that "they are sooooo comfy" - and wears a duvet for a coat. Does she care what she looks like? Does she heck. But she don't like being called Mrs Merton, so that's her new nick on blonde now.

She has a weird metabolism too - very small petrol tank, & no reserve tank, so she needs to eat every 2 hours, failing which she simply falls aleep - standing up! I jest not.

But there's a tough side to her, & mess with her at your peril. She fell out with the Quality Hotel - there's an odd name, all things considered - at Walsall over the weekend, & they did not know what hit them.

She has a "Colombo" style car too. She drove up to Walsall the weekend & mentioned that "the wheels have gone small". Code for slow puncture. Tom or Kiv offered to sort it for her, & she said better not, it's got no Tax or MOT. (Sorted today). And it would not start on Friday, so three guys from Grosvenor Walsall gave her a push.

And her Live Update patnership with sloppy is just awesome, never did a pair "fit" better, between them the blonde Live Updates have become a social evening - you get Poker Updates, anecdotes, pics with wry captions, anagrams, connundrums, and bizarre grammatical stuff. I cringe at how bad & "flat" the one's I used to do now look.

Move over Lucy, Jen's coming through.

Jen. Gotta love her.

In the words of our own Mrs Merton, hands outstretched - "Hoorah for Jen",

Wow I feel like my ears have gone all pink and I bet they have too - almost embarrassed by how nice y'all are to me and feel weird replying to this thread BUT some things must be said...

Firstly, JAMES 'ROYAL FLUSH' DEMPSEY - - I first chatted to him while frittering money away at the Gutshot.  He was a bit intoxicated and actually it was mainly him chatting but I had a feeling I would be seeing more of him...  In the Suspects when he had such a great run at Brighton I was really impressed by the way he played down there and he was infectiously excited about the whole deal.  When we made the last three with Burnley John (who I'd previously just updated on in prestigious-type things) I would have been just as happy watching any of us go through, but especially James.  It's just great when people are both enthusiastic and turn out to be perfect gentlemen about the result.

Secondly, getting to know this (at the time pretty random) selection of poker players a bit better was fun, especially as adventuring around Europe was involved.  Helsinki was especially great (and hard luck out there JP - you're a class act, if perhaps needing to work on your alcohol tolerance)... Jon Raab - cheers for taking a shot on someone completely from leftfield - and cheers is an understatement.  I hope to do blonde and Bluesq proud in Monaco...

Having support from a forum I love to update for has made this whole experience even better.  If Snoopy and tikay weren't coming to MC then I'd have to dig my heels in and boycott the whole thing.

All the best

Jen

Jen, I wanted to add my congratulations and add a few words but almost everything I wanted to say has been said already. I have always admired the work you have done for this forum and I will never forget the scene in 'badbeat alley' when I saw you, head against wall, laptop on legs, asleep, with a half eaten chicken sarnie on a plate in your other hand.

I was gutted when I saw you had been knocked out in France and really hope you play well and enjoy Monte Carlo and bring home a cheque that you deserve. This forum and many poker players would be delighted if you did.

All the best.

Being a young newbie, all I've got to go on is that call in Deauville with K3 I believe, 3 is bottom pair and she called a massive bet on the river and won. Awesome. I'm trying to 'mind  it exactly off the top of my head but I remember reading the updates and thinking that was one of the best calls I've ever heard about. I really hope to catch all of y'all in Glasgow but Jen you are a legend for that call alone IMHO.
