C5 Extraordinary people tonight is about the guy that 'Rain Man' was based on. Title: Re: N/P Brilliant Video (would bring a tear to a glass eye) Post by: Rod Paradise on February 27, 2006, 11:12:37 AM The reactions from the crowd & the boy's teammates was what did for me. Autistic & Aspergers kids are supposed to struggle to make friends, but that boy's got loads of them, Rochester NY isn't one of the best areas either if I remember correctly.

Ah, I get you. I don't remember meeting anyone with autism, although I've worked with engineers who quite possibly had mild asperger's (which predisposes people to engineering apparently). On a slightly related subject, there's a book by Elizabeth Moon called "Speed of Dark" which I read which seemed to deal with Autism very well (it's set in the future, but isn't really sci-fi), I recommended it to a mate with an autistic child & he said it was brilliantly written.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345447549/qid=1141039807/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/203-0529778-2780711 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345447549/qid=1141039807/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/203-0529778-2780711). it is true that autistic children struggle to make friends, its more that they grow to get used to other children being around them.for some reason though other children love autistic kids. That's close to home as my kids play a lot with a neighbours boy who has autism but is the salt of the earth. A truly loving caring kid, but simply prone to the occasional outburst. On a slightly o/t side note, since I've been playing poker I seem to have developed torrets syndrome. I watched a thing tonight, it featured the guy from rain man on channel 5, it was about his life and how he has dealt with his autism. I must admit, I wasn't really aware what autism was. It is amazing to see people like the basketball player achieve his dreams. :)up |
