Title: o/t Mozilla/Firefox
Post by: Karabiner on March 02, 2006, 09:32:14 PM
I've been happily using this browser for about a year now, maybe a bit less.

Suddenly today when I logged on it asked me to identify myself as though I were a new customer.

I now have Google as my homepage instead of Betfair and my favourites are no longer there ???

I'm confused, it's disowned me  :o

How weird.. have you gone to the knowledge base at mozilla.org?

I hope that doesn't happen to mine.. I have loads of certs on mine for work - they will be a right pain to sort out if they go walkies.

This happened to me about 2 months ago and even reinstalling didn't solve it, I could no longer save any bookmarks either.

Never did find out what the problem was  :dontask:

I'm pretty much a techno-dunce Heidi, and all I did was click on the shortcut as per usual and hey presto !

Scariness!

All my work is web based, and involves switching between web pages .. hence why the tabs are so useful in Firefox - not good!

I think I've had this before.
If I remember correctly (but check first!) I had to close Firefox, go to the Mozilla folder (in Program Files) and delete one of the profiles that was stored somewhere in there.
Never found out what caused it though.

[Edit]
Just checked - the folder may be in the /Documents and Settings/<Your Login>/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/ folder
I'd suggest you copy and paste the whole profiles folder to a Temp directory first, to back it up, before deleting any profiles.
Good luck!

Thanks Gilbern, wish I knew what you meant  ::)

Reckon I'll have to get one of my tech-savvy pals round.

That's what I had to do, Oooops, I should of said. I'm sure the instructions were to close forefox, create the new profile and check that it's working, and only then delete the original.

I think that's what happened Paul, it updated me and I must have either clicked or not clicked something ???

Instructions for recovery are here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

I think this was a common fault that's now been fixed, so hopefully it shouldn't happen in the future (I could be wrong though!  :D)

I had a go at that, but it's really a little too advanced for me.

I'll get someone who understands it to have a go.

Thanks for the input though Paul.

Happened to me a load of times before i dumped the unstable piece of sh**te!
Best to keep a backup of all your bookmarks, history and whatever else you think you may need.
Also keep IE updated for all the websites firefox can't view.

Shame you found it to be unstable ifm, i've never had an issue and all the handy extensions preclude me from going back to ie.

Good luck with your issue Ralph, it seems like it shouldn't be too much of a problem for a techy to fix.
