Title: O/T CRBs Post by: Mr F on March 06, 2006, 03:53:58 PM Ok, didn't want to hijack Poppets good news.
But with all this talk of CRBs I wanted to know what this enhanced CRB thing is?? What's the difference? Also wondering if people who have these realise they run out pretty much the moment they've been signed?? Title: Re: O/T CRBs Post by: matt674 on March 06, 2006, 04:19:20 PM ok, so us jungle folk may be a bit behind the rest of civilzed society - you are enquiring about what an enhanced CRB is?
Please could you inform us simple creatures what a CRB is in the first place? Title: Re: O/T CRBs Post by: Trace on March 06, 2006, 04:21:08 PM Why did I think this was referring to a type of ermmmmmmmmmm ermmmmmmmmmm

Title: Re: O/T CRBs Post by: Longy on March 06, 2006, 04:36:34 PM Yep it stands for the Criminal Records Bureau. You have to re apply every time you move schools in teaching. Right effort it is, the fact that i had been at uni and moved house every year, threw them completely. As we all know given recent problems in teaching the system is shall we say less than bullet proof.
Title: Re: O/T CRBs Post by: Heid on March 06, 2006, 04:43:20 PM I don't really think they are worth much to be honest. It ticks a few boxes, but it is by no means a failsafe. Certainly the standard one is not worth the paper it is written on.
I am in the process of sorting them out for my moderators, and staff at my work. They are Criminal Records Board Checks. Needed for individuals who come into contact, or work with children as part of their daily work. The difference between an enhanced and a basic/standard check is that it is all the records from all the police forces, and also they cross check a number of special lists. As Bracken said .. they are out of date as soon as they are issued, and the majority of those who have offended and are prosecuted of any child related offences have no crimincal record of any sort before they are caught for the child related offence. It's also very difficult to get one as you have to go through a clearing house or official body to get one - and officially you can't apply as an individual, which ends up being a catch 22 situation for some people. One good thing though (for me anyway), the CRB people never used to recognise that it was good practice for online moderators to have a CRB, but now they recognise and accept applications for checking from them. And it takes bloody ages. This whole subject winds me right up. I've been in some form of childrens work since I was 16 including youth clubs, nurseries, schools, hospital work, table tennis coaching cubs etc. Some of these were done as work experience at college and we had to have a police check done which was pretty much a forerunner to the CRB. There were only 3 blokes on our course and even back then we were specifically warned about how careful we had to be whatever we were doing. I left college and cases of child abuse etc became more public and the CRB came into effect. I've been helping a local school with venture weeks etc for six years and for a few months started helping one day a week in the classroom so had to get another check done. THen i went for my warrant with Cubs and had to get another done. Why not just use the opriginal, "Oh no we're a different organisation" but the first one is with the LEA???? Last year the school needed to check the validity of the first check and they were told that they're pretty much void once they've been issued. So now I have to get another one to go away with them this year???!!! The whole thing gets on my nerves and just seems really pointless. Last year I was in the Isle of Wight helping with a week away. We were due to go on a day out. Unfortunately there was a fairly big medical emergency. The pupil was ok but not fit to go with the rest of the group. There were only three of us and it was decided that as a non teacher I should stay behind and keep an eye on the pupil. It basically meant making sure they were ok and calling their nurse to keep her advised of the situation. Obviously I would never do anything untoward but if they had turned round at the end of the day and made some form of accusation for any reason I would have been in the s**t. They didn't and I stress that this would never happen but my point is that that bit of paper has done nothing for either person in this situation. being checked does not make me immune to accusations, and neither does it keep her safe from some sick pervert. If they want to put a system in place then make it worthwhile and actually mean something. Right rant over my apologies. |
