Anyone else noticed a wave of negativity recently?

Time for the counter-thread. Let's talk about people we look up to and respect. People we'd like to give a virtual slap on the back to, rather than a virtual slap in the face?

Just as an added bonus, why don't we make this one A-Z.




I'll get us started, conviently enough, with the letter A.

A is for Andre Agassi.

A sportsman who has been at or near the top of his profession for 20 years. In such a physically demanding sport, I think this is just amazing. Most bow out at their peak, few have the strength of character to plough on and fight for top 10 spots when they have once been number one. A top Las Vegan as far as I'm concerned, a true gent and a fine ambassador for tennis.

If you're in the middle of typing something (a person beginning with B for example) and someone else gets their first, go ahead and post it anyway.

This is a thread of positivity, ain't nobody gonna knock you here  8)

C is for Christopher Reeve...superman who suffered a horrible accident and thereafter bore his disability with dignity and did enormous amounts of work for good causes. Died last year, tragically young. Ttoday his wife passed away, of lung cancer.

Sorry, we were at D when I started this.

Douglas Bader. He was a fighter pilot during WW2.

 After a crash in 1931, he lost both his legs. Despite this he was still able to fly and was vital to the RAF's success in WW2.

During WW2, Bader shot down 23 German planes. This figure still makes him the 5th highest on record for the RAF.

He was captured by German forces in 1941. Bader was hit by an anti aircraft cannon and became trapped after one of his prosthetic legs became jammed in the aircraft. Eventually he was able to escape the burning plane.

Bader was held as a prisoner of war. He was held in high esteem by the German airforce as well as the British.

Bader's German counterpart, Adolf Galland arranged for new prosthetic legs to be dropped by the Royal Airforce. This shows how highly he was regarded.

While being held P.O.W, Bader made many attempted escapes. He was held in Colditz for a short period of time. In an attempt to prevent Bader from continuing with his escape plans, German guards threatened to take away his legs.

After returning to the UK at the end of the war, Bader remained in the RAF.

In 1945, Bader then led 300 RAF planes over London to celebrate the end of the war and the lives cost in protecting our country.

After retirement, Bader went on to achieve a Golf handicap in the low figures.

For me, this guy is a true hero.  We owe guys like this everything.

Derek Wishart.

Now chances are that no one knows who this is, He is a good friend of mine and my ex manager from my time at Corporate Express. He found out on the last day of November 2005 that he has terminal cancer and was told he would not make it to Christmas 2005, They were wrong.

I speak with him every few days and he is so upbeat for a guy facing the reaper head on, He squeezes every last bit of juice outta each day and is still going, He has taken some risks in order to get extra time with his wife and young kids.

Now if i ever find myself in a position similar to Derek I hope that I can summon the strength and depth of character to carry on as he has, to never give up and Live every last minute.

K is for Kevin Smith

He's directed a whole handful of entertaining films, my favourite of which was 'Clerks' back in 1994. You may know him as Silent Bob.
Clerks 2 is out this year, aaaayyyyaaaarrrr can't wait.

As a comic Geek, I happen to know that Kevin smith managed a feat few other writers have, he brought a hero back from the dead, and I mean the whole comic book not just the character.

To say the least its been over 3 years and Green Arrow still going strong.

Lance Armstrong.  He beat a life threatening illness.  Most people didn't think he would survive.   He not only survived but then went on to win the toughest bike race in the world 7 years on the trot.

Xuyen Pham aka Bad Girl.

The thought of being at a table with her used to fill me with dread tbh lol she comes across quite fierce on the tele, but James introduced me to Xuyen when we were in a comp together in Barca, we all ended up having dinner together a couple of times and she is lovely! Just shows how wrong you can be about someone.

Total respect for the way that she plays.

G is for George lucas

This man has created so many memorable characters. I know after watching Indiana jones and the raiders of the lost arc, My mates and I were always arguing about who was gonna be the nazi, when it came to play time at school, or who was gonna be a storm trooper from starwars and who was gonna be Luke Skywalker or Han Solo.

Akira Kurosawa, This guy made some of the best Japanese movies and they went on to become the inspiration for some of the Hollywood greats, One fine example is The Seven Samurai, Great movie that gave birth to the magnificent Seven many years later.  

Another little known fact is he made a move called The Hidden Fortress, which is where George Lucas got the initial idea for Star wars from.

S is for Sark because he is a nice, genuine, down to earth guy... even though he may be slightly obsessed with the tweenies

H is for Hubba Hubba

King of the Hoobs! A far superior show to the Tweenies IMHO. When I'm flicking about with my remote in the middle of the night and the Hoobs come on, I know that the evening is over and there is no more chance of accidentally running into some porn.

No matter though, as I always learn something new when I watch that show.  8)

I know the tweenies, only because I have many friends that have kids.  Honest. lol ( I don't have the boxset or tune in every morning)

It is one of those shows like button moon, when I was a kid. It ploughs its way into the Subconscious mind. Before you know it, you can sing the song and name all the characters.

I have no kids at the moment, and probably not for another 10 15 years or so. So by then, it will be some other show that will invade my mind. I hope it involves machines that can change shape( transformers style).

Me and my daughter were Jedi's in the census. My girlfriend wouldn't do it bah.

D for my Dad. A great Dad and Granddad who never let his drinking effect his relationship with his sons and grand daughter. He obviously struggled with the booze all his life but until the end we never really knew by how much. It must have took a lot of strength to keep up the front for the benefit of those around him and he went out with dignity and honour in a world with very little.
