Yep.

Tired of countdowns, but always seem to watch them.

Love the film ones, though.

I've always considered Marlon Brando to be the best actor... or potentially.

I couldn't believe Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks were so far down.

Is anyone watching this on C4?

Remember this will be Film Four esque choices.

A De Niro/Pacino 1,2 wouldn't surprise me at all.

Tom Hanks, Tim Robbins as well.

I cant believe they are in it at all...

Washington brings a whole new definition to the word wooden. And he was higher than Poitier !!

Christopher Walken.  Best actor ever.

although Im a big fan of some of his films (Prophecy, Dear Hunter), he cant act. delivering lines in the style of Cristopher Walken isn't acting unless you're NOT Christopher Walken

I think if this poll was in 10 years, then Norton would be in the top bunch.  But he is really young

Title: Re: 50 Greatest Actors

lol.  It is probably dodgy British actors like Ross Kemp who are voting on it.  I keep expecting Phil Mitchell to make the top 20.  :D

not yet. i dont expect him to be there....Not that I dont think he is a great actor, just that if he wass going to be in it, he would be further down than top 20.

did someone say Patrick Stewart ? FFS all he has been in is a glorified soap opera. Next you will be telling us Jack Duckworth should be there.

I'm a big Norton fan.

Rounders and Amercian History X are two of my fave films.

I hope David Bowie is in there, if only for his part in Labyrinth.  ;goodvevil;

Hmmm, do you need to be versatile to be a good actor?

If you only play holdem well are you a good poker player?

Versatility is good, but not essential to an individual performance. There are notable exceptions of course.

I've had this conversation with Baron be4.

I know De Niro has a certain mannerism, but I wouldn't say he's the same in all his films.

Just look at Rocky and Bull Winkle.  ::)

Who is Jack Duckworth. I bet he is a soap actor. No soap actor could make a poll like this.

Patrick Stewart. Great actor.  X-Men, Christmas Carol, Mobey Dick. The guy is one of the best.

If you're being yourself, that's not pretending. It's just showing up.

Steven Segeal, obviously not a good actor, however Chrissy boy Walken is. Neither are very "versatile" but ones films are worth seeing, the others aren't.

Samuel L. Jackson is my favourite.

Although I'm not quite sad enough to have Ezekiel 25:17 memorized  :D

Ok ok, its good to be versatile, I can't deny that, but it's sometimes better to do one thing really well than 10 things allright. Particulary if the thing that needs doing is your forte.

Of course it's better to do 10 things really well, most of the greatest actors are versatile, but some very good ones are not.

Of Al Pacino vs. Robert De Niro

"Even today, no-one can pick a clear winner"

For me it's got to be Pacino. He doesn't prostitute himself by doing lame ass comedy films. Does Bob really need the money that bad?

Love Pacino, not so much for Scarface, although that was good. It's more his Dog Day Afternoon and Godfather performances that kept me glued to the screen.

I've had this conversation with Baron be4.

I know De Niro has a certain mannerism, but I wouldn't say he's the same in all his films.

Just look at Rocky and Bull Winkle.  ::)

Eh, now dont start this again!

Woddid I tell ya? Brando owns De Niro's sorry ass! Level with Pacino? Pah!

Pretty good top 10 IMO.

To be honest I think in a few years the top 50 will all be next generation actors with talent like Seymour Hoffman, Norton, Brody, Depp etc etc etc

Title: Re: 50 Greatest Actors
Post by: snoopy1239 on March 13, 2006, 01:09:57 AM
Of Al Pacino vs. Robert De Niro

For me it's got to be Pacino. He doesn't prostitute himself by doing lame ass comedy films. Does Bob really need the money that bad?

I wouldn't say that makes him the weaker actor though.

Yep.

Tired of countdowns, but always seem to watch them.

Love the film ones, though.

I've always considered Marlon Brando to be the best actor... or potentially.

Title: Re: 50 Greatest Actors
Post by: snoopy1239 on March 13, 2006, 01:15:04 AM
I do wonder though if Pacino and De Niro hadn't had done some of their weaker films, if they'd pip Brando to the top.

Brando hasn't done many weak ones, because he hasn't done many films.

However, I think Brando is one of the few who turn acting into a pure art form.

Changing a script can be translated as arrogance, but when his improvisations turn out to be so captivating, it's hard to argue with the man.

Plus, he would have sat on you.

Indeed. That doesn't mean De Niro is close to being as good tho.... ;goodvevil;

I think the problem with comparing De Niro/Pacino to Brando is that Brando did it first. Has it been bettered? Very tough to say with a revolutionary actor.

I believe every performance you give effects every other performance, just in a small way, but it's there nonetheless. I'm less encapulated by De Niros performance in Casino and Goodfellas after watching Rocky and Bullwinkle. Kinda spoiled things a little for me.
Suspending my disbelief becomes that much harder.

Doesn't mess things up completely, after all, he is still an outstanding actor. I certainly wouldn't say that he isn't versatile. It's just that with not much between him and Pacino the above is what tips the balance for me.

For this reason a lot of board treaders will be very selective of the roles they take. Ed Norton, Johnny Depp and Daniel Day Lewis being the ones that were mentioned in the programme for doing so.

Like I said, Brando is one of the few actors to turn his profession into a pure art form.

An artist can plan a picture for weeks, preparing every single detail, and then translate it to canvas to create a masterpiece.

Few artists can create that masterpiece spontaneously. I think when it comes to acting, Brando is one of those few.

It's like the legends who burn out.

Would Marley, Lennon, or Hendrix still be considered in such high esteem if they had lived to see their career tail off with some weak performances, flopped albums, and poor writing?

Day Lewis has to be the most selective around.

I agree with Pacino being better but for different reasons. I loved De Niro in Raging Bull - utterly compelling. However in a lot of other films I just see an actor with lots of similar roles. I dont see his character, I see Robert De Niro. I've never had this with Pacino.

Also watching Pacino's growth as an actor (and a character) over 3 Godfather films is truly amazing.

Ok, this isn't exactly the same as the greatest movie stars.

But has anyone seen the site for the new Quentin Tarintino movie. It is called the 'HOSTEL'.

I hate movies like this one. But the website is kind of cool.  I got to it from one of my email accounts. On hotmail there is an advert which I clicked on.

What is good about these type of films?.

Blood and Guts. Not for me.

I like movies like Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco, Meet Joe Black, Good Will Hunting, The Hustler

I thought horror movies were dead.

Kevin Costner   Dances With Wolves

Some folks think John Wayne is a good actor.  He is absolutely awful.

Captain Janeway was voted best Star Trek captain.  She is terrible at acting.

David Hasselhoff is a huge star is Germany.  He can't sing or act.

Costner is a far better actor than any of the above.   I think twenty years from now, people will still be talking about each of the above.  Twenty years from now people will still say  " that Costner chap sure can act ".  " he is a natural actor "..  " what a great performance he did in the film with the Wolves ".   :D
