I should have bet more on the river but really didn't think i'd get paid. As it turns out he'd made 2 pair and probably would have paid some more. oh well, when the flop went down i nearly fell out of my chair then quickly realised I wouldn't make a bean.
any ideas on how to get paid in this situation vs only one opponent? bet the flop and hope he thinks you wouldn't bet 3 of a kind?

Unfortunately you cant play the hand any different - you just have to hope that he will bluff at the pot and try and represent the hand you have got. If he checks it all the way to the river then your only hope is that he's hit something on the end and he'll pay a small bet on the river. At the end of the day his 9 is no good so he's beat even if you have K10, KJ or KQ as well so its unlikely you'd have gotten much more from him anyway.

In MTT's i'll even check a monster hand like this down all the way to the river if i know that my opponent would fold to a bet on the river. If i bet and he passes i will win exactly the same amount as if i check on the river. Therefore i will check and show my opponent that i can be a tricky monkey at times, then later in the tournament the table will think twice about trying to bluff into me when i am checking a hand down when i havent got a monster hand.

I would bet the flop, they might make a play then, especially with 2 spades down he might start paying to draw.

As i happens you probably win a resonable pot, he doesnt think you have an Ace, and calls a bit with the 9 top kicker.
