Title: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: Graham C on March 13, 2006, 03:25:22 PM Perhaps it's because I have only really started playing in the last 6 months but I am slightly concerned, not too much as I don't play for big money, I've never risked money that I don't have, I don't chase my losses and I don't ever find myself denying myself or others about things but I do wonder if perhaps I am addicted to gambling, poker in particular.
I tend to play every day, certainly every other day. The last two Saturdays, I've had big days out with my mates and know that an early night would be an idea yet I find myself playing poker till 1am. Last night I was up till 1:30am and am buggered now, but I am planning tonights games because I have a day off tomorrow. I also bet frequently on things - again, only small bets and I am less worried because the thought of not betting for a week or two doesn't bother me. I'm planning a weeks holiday in May and I did even think of the chances of getting away one night and finding a game, but the missus would be less than impressed :D Perhaps I do have a bit of a habit but like I mentioned, it's not really an issue, just something I've picked up on. I'm addicted (to poker), i just dont worry about anything :) Lifes too short, enjoy it while you can....... Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: TightEnd on March 13, 2006, 03:36:07 PM I love it, and as I have got older I find I worry less and live for the day more and more.....
I've done the "career stress" thing for twenty years and found it made me unhappy, a pain to live with (or so she said 8) and affected my health. I sure as heck ain't going to fret about playing poker! Whats the worst that could happen with me playing poker? I go skint I suppose....in the big scheme of things there are a lot worse things that could happen in life Enjoy!! Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: TightEnd on March 13, 2006, 03:44:06 PM You're a pro poker player now tighty? gl m8 after a fashion, fingers in a few pies..... will go back to work after a sabbatical in all probability to be honest. Was completely burnt out working in the city for 20 years. Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: Graham C on March 13, 2006, 03:45:42 PM oh i do enjoy it :D I love every game I play, I even have grown to respect bad beats because its damn nice when you inflict one on someone :)
glad to know that people are addicted, it would be wierd if no one else was, then I'd be concerned! Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: AdamM on March 13, 2006, 03:54:59 PM I do often think about the addictiveness of the game and how the overall losers are dealing with it. I've been playing a few years and started as a losing player. I look at it as paying for my tuition. now I'm making a (modest) living from poker I am acutley aware that it's other peoples hobby to play at a loss that provides that income.

Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: Canuck on March 13, 2006, 04:26:10 PM To answer the question it would depend on your defintion of addiction.
Can I go through a day without playing poker....yes. Do I want to go through a day without poker....no. I am not addicted, but I love to play. Also, I would say 95% of the top poker pros are addicted or close to it. That's why I love poker so much, no such thing as a professional alcoholic, or the world series of smoking champ. Poker is a realm on to is own and I intend on playing all my life. In fact, I hope I die at the poker table when I am like 107 years old. Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: M3boy on March 13, 2006, 04:36:34 PM Simple answer -
With Poker being such a cruel game at times - who the hell else would play it day in day out if they didnt love the game!!! Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: stallyon on March 13, 2006, 04:37:03 PM if only there was a helpline that we could call 8)

Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: Sark79 on March 13, 2006, 05:12:16 PM I become obsessed about things very quickly. I always have done. I don't think I am addicted to poker though.
If poker is your favorite hobby, it is not an addcition in my opinion. I know many people who watch, play and support football. But I never hear someone say " poor george, he is addcited to football". I do like to gamble though, but not the traditional games. When I was at school, some friends and I would each put £1 on the table. We would then bet part or all of the £1 on which colour of car would come round the corner of the main road next. This was alot of fun. There was no particular skill, but it was a good way to have harmless fun. In the early 90's when I played this game, it was RED. Now I would bet on Silver. I've done the "career stress" thing for twenty years and found it made me unhappy, a pain to live with (or so she said 8) and affected my health.) LOL been there, done that and won the biatch back. In fact she even supports my poker playing because 1) I make a little bit of cash and 2) it makes me happy and not the stressed out career driven pr@t i once was. I'm addicted but love it. If you make time for the family and are fair with your time spent poker playing then whats the problem? Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Monies for spending. As a socialist I firmly believe that the only way for society to prosper is spend money its a cycle. I would prefer it more if the moneyw as coming back to me more often though. Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: thetank on March 15, 2006, 01:21:53 AM As much as we dress it up as being a game of skill, (which of course it is) it is also a form of gambling. Gambling can be very addictive, especially if we know we can win over the long haul. Poker is probably one of the most addictive forms of gambling there is for this reason.
The argument is that a gambling addiction is not a problem if you are winning money. It's important to recognize that while this may be true for now, there may be a compulsion there, and things could change in the future. We need every (honest) advantage we can get at the table, one of these is understanding yourself. Do some reading into gambling addictions, a better understanding of how these things come about can help prevent you leak money at the tables. Also, it helps to know where some of your opponents are coming from. Good to see so many people on this thread admit to being addicted. Jokingly or not, it's a good thing to own up to it. My name is Thomas and I'm addicted to poker. Right now I'm a winning player so that's no problem, my addiction helps my personal finances rather than hinders them. I recognize that it is not outwith the realms of possibility that this will change, and then I will need to address my addiction before it is too late. One thing I'm trying (although not very hard admittedly) is to do more things outside poker. At the moment I play as a job from home, I spend countless hours on a poker forum, I socialize either playing poker, or with fellow poker players. The only time I stop playing poker is to perform bodily functions. (Oh dear.. just realised I keep the latest copy of Poker Europa in the bathroom, not even that's true.) I'm the wrong side of the balance and should really do something about it. I am, but I'm not going to tell you what is. After all, it's off-topic ;goodvevil; Title: Re: Do you ever worry that you are addicted? Post by: Sark79 on March 15, 2006, 02:00:13 AM You make alot of good points there Tank.
I don't feel I could ever become addicted to poker. So I can't really understand how others feel. I am addicted to the idea of becoming a better player. To be honest, it is more the thought of being a 'someone' than winning loads of money. I have always respected sports heroes the most out of everyone. Even though there are real heroes like charity workers, scientists attempting to find cures for cancer and firemen who save peoples lives. It is the sports people I always wanted to be like. I always wanted to reach a high level as a sports star as far back as I remember. I wasn't good enough at cycling and never had the money to get very far in motorsports. Poker is the opportunity I have waited for my entire life. I just wish I had found it sooner than 26. I may be wrong but there are different types of addiction in gambling terms. I don't get overly excited about winning money from gambling. I have put one bet on in my entire life at a bookies. I won £800 on a tennis match. When I won the money, I wasn't hyped up at all. Because there was no skill involved, it was just luck. The control we have over the result is the great thing about poker. The more a person is able to learn. The better a player they become. It is the skill factor which hopefully will prevent me from becoming addicted. Winning is the greatest feeling in the world. This dosen't just apply to poker. It can apply to everything, even trying to swing higher on a rope swing as a kid than one of your friends. It is a fantastic feeling. I am not really sure if I would call wanting to win, an addcition. Does addiciton mean ' getting a buzz from winning money' or ' wanting to beat everyone else' ? I can't really understand how this must feel for someone who is addcited. Whoever they are, admitting to their addcition and taking the neccessary steps to defeat it, makes them a very brave person in my eyes. I wish them all the best.
