Title: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: Watertight on March 21, 2006, 02:02:09 AM After knocking an opponent out of an stt. I gave the customary ul . Following this comment i recieved several comments on how i could be a little more compansionate etc. So it got me thinking do people read the abbreviations different. My opinion on ul was unlucky but others percieved it to be you lose just wondering what you guys thought of it . TY

He came back with 'what the f*** ???' I said 'wp = well played mate !' He said 'oh sorry, thought you were calling me a w**ky pr1ck !' :D :D Very strange, yet amusing to all. I think it comes down to peoples frames of mind sometimes as to what they interprete the jargon as. Or they're just hill-billies. Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: matt674 on March 21, 2006, 01:08:37 PM have to admit that i dont say anything unless i actually know the person who has just exited from the tourney or if the person who has just exited says something to me first like "nh" or similar.
You will never ever see me say the following two phrases as i hate it when other people say it to me: "sorry" - no your not, your aim of putting all your chips in the pot was to win the contents of the pot regardless of how you do it. You have achieved your objective and you are not sorry about it..... "gg" - you've just seen someone spike a one outer on me on the river whilst only 2 places away from making the money, please explain in what way this is "good"...... or maybe its just because monkeys are just heartless creatures!! :D Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: ifm on March 21, 2006, 03:01:06 PM When i first started online i thought UL meant you loser!!
I do type in GG or UL myself now not because of the literal meaning, more as a sentiment. Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: I, Zimbra on March 21, 2006, 04:46:14 PM gfy is one that always got me into trouble...
To me, it's always meant 'good for you'. Apparently there's another meaning. === As for when to apply these epithets, I sometimes find 'nh and gg' particularly hollow - 'nh' in particular is extremely overused. I've even seen people who aren't even in the pot say 'nhs' when AA and KK comes out on the bubble - which if you're the one losing, is not a nice hand at all. 'gg' is also overused - to me it sounds particularly ironic if you've been playing badly and gone out early, for a whole bunch of people to start telling you what a good game it is... now that you're not in it any more. I generally reserve 'nh' for quads or better, or sometimes for when I've made a bad call against someone who has a better hand than I gave them credit for. I reserve 'gg' for final tables, if at all... unless someone I've just knocked out says it to me first, in which case I might say it back out of politeness. In getting knocked out - if I wish to be magnanimous - I generally wish the remaining competitors good luck (gl) which is my waying of signing off, and is to my mind the most unambiguous of these sayings. Or I might just say nothing at all - usually because I have to rush off somewhere and scream at the walls. Please don't take it personally if that's the case... ;) Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: mex on March 21, 2006, 11:22:30 PM wp gets on my nads
Q9 os outa pso calls a raise and reraise then makes a str8 on turn and gets a wp or nh? generally gg gets said on and after bubble ul if they were seriously out drawn I have been lambasted before for not saying sry after an out draw. Happened to night when my KK got called down and he made trip 7's on turn. Money went in and i river K. He comes out with you could at least say sry? I replied if you tried to mug me with a knife and i pull out a gun and shot you in the balls would you expect me to say sry? I think GG wp etc are just habit now, like saying fine when someone says how are you. Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: Liam on March 21, 2006, 11:31:26 PM i stick to the basics...
if someone played a hand really well... "well played" and in case of going out to a bad beat... "DIE" (not an abreviation) or maybe "DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE" once in a while. Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: mex on March 21, 2006, 11:43:46 PM i had one guy who wouldn't leave me alone after Knocking him out with a chk raised flush.
He basically said it was underhand and in his home town id be beaten up for such dirty play!!! He then followed me to another table! so i typed <click> to signify i was putting him on ignore He replied 'well click ya mother' How exactly do you reply to that. Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: I, Zimbra on March 23, 2006, 08:19:48 PM ignore your own mother?
what a cad. ;tk; Title: Re: The meanings of online poker related jargon Post by: The Dundonian on March 23, 2006, 08:52:18 PM wp for well played is the only one I use, only when somebody has played the hand well and only if that hand was against me, otherwise i stfu.
