Title: Celebrity Poker
Post by: ACE2M on April 07, 2006, 12:47:59 PM
Whats the point?

Just read negreanu's bit about the soccer player/proffesionals tournament and having read dc's bit as well, it makes me wonder who gains anything from these tournaments?
Proffesionals get a fee, but who enjoys watching them?
the ladies event on sky recently was embarrasing to watch (even with a 3k buy in, i didn't see chilli's game but it must have been better than the crap i watched)
Celeb poker is also complete crud and these team events are pretty lame to.

I suspect the point is that Matchroom (or similar company) gets a large fee from the TV company, then gets people to stump up the buy in, adds in a mix of its own contracted snooker players/footballers/actors/delete as applicable which it gets for free.

In the morning it then deposits large sack of money in bank.

It's celebrity everything these days. Most of them are 'no-name know nothings', frankly I'd rather watch a bunch of good amateur players, heck, you'd learn 100 times more about poker watching a SNG from the blonde bash than one of these celeb heats.

Any chance of a televised blonde tournament on Poker425? 8)

I think there is a place in today's TV market for celebrity poker - it was after watching one of those shows that I got into the game in the first place.  It did take me a few weeks though to 'unlearn' everything I'd seen and start from scratch.  I agree with your comments about the womens poker open - it was painful to watch.

There must be some balance to be struck here - I'm sure there must be plenty of 'celebs' who actually play poker on a regular basis that would be willing to sign up for these things. The TV execs have lost nothing, and anyone that wants to tune in to watch a half decent game of poker can.

.....should clarify that I only saw about 10 minutes of the first 'celeb' heat of the women's poker open - I'm sure there was some great viewing once they got to the proper heats.

I suppose Claw has a point in that it can attract new players into the game

Hopefully unlike Claw these new players will not make such efforts to improve and will play the way they see these celebrities play

Of course one should be careful of generalising too....the teachings of MadMarty lay behind the successes of Helen Chamberlain, Matthew Stevens and Phil Taylor in pro/celebrity and poker million tournaments in 2003-05.

Teddy Sheringham is also a good player

Michael Greco is also very good, and has improved tons

Of course there are some decent players who take it seriously enough to afford some sort of pleasure from watching it, but if any one has not read dc's bit on neville southall's all in call with 7 high, this is car crash tv.

Mind you, not many Welsh poker playing footballers to choose from I suppose

However they might have found one who would not call two bets and then an all in down the streets on a board of AQQA8 with 76!!!

Mr Southall was one of my boyhood heroes, a machine designed for stopoing shots but clearly stopped a few to many with his head.

It also reminds me of the classic John McCririck moment at the Vic last year

The board is  Ad Kh Qs Jh Tc

Chris Moneymaker bets the river

He folds

Moneymaker literally gasped.

did he have a 4 with his 7 though...in which case calling all-in is surely the correct play?

I watched some of the ladies tournament - and I cringed a lot - the one with Stephanie Beecham and her friend who was 'talked' into playing and didn't have a clue - it's not poker and it's not pretty......last nights one with Rhowena in it was better as they had some serious players - but the inexpereince of women like Tina Hobley who bets with anything doesn't make it good viewing - just frustrating.

it's only good poker if all the players are of a similar standard. Mixing them up is just bad.

Poker on TV is crap regardless, its good TV when:

The banter is amusing. eg Gsns high stakes or some annoying twat at the wsop. ( read matusow/hellmuth/etc ).
The plays are tension filled. Hence the high amount of bluffs/rebluffs shown on TV as well as badbeats.

Celebrity poker tournaments are thus crap because:

They are all zlisters who couldn't be witty if you had them strapped to a large catapult and had someone threatening to chop the rope holding it back unless they were witty.
They couldn't make a good move if you had some sharks with lasers on their heads threatening them.

V funny monkey boy........

I am soo busy at work I literally had to give poker a miss - and it has done me some good! Looking forward to getting back in the swing - but another couple of weeks of hard graft before I can really immerse myself in poker. I have a plan to play more live poker than internet but we'll see if it's possible.....

Nice to be back - and it hasn't changed a bit!  :)

Looking forward to getting back in the swing

Me too - nothing like sitting in my tyre swing in the back garden after a hard days work, nothing more soothing then feeling the breeze brushing thru my fur coat in the early evening sunshine.......

I must say i agree with most centiments in this thread.  It is very hard to watch any celebrity/sportspeople heats but until this tournament i just never watched them.  If there is one possitvie to be gained then they have made non-poker players watch and consequently turned them into poker players - Claw i think said started this way.

Another amazing thing to come out of this Ladies comp for me is the comments i have gained in my home town of Grantham.  Just because it was front page of our local rag, and having a chip shop i am now talking to nearly every single customer that walks through the door about poker!  It amuses me that for the last year and half i have gone out of my way to say hi and pass the time of day with the customers and usually i get a grunt or weather talk or nothing....NOW i cant believe how many people, young, old, male and female are excited for me or have invited me to home games or tell me their poker stories or are gonna watch the heats even though they havent a clue what is going on.  For 3 weeks now every time i walk through town i get stopped at least 3 times to talk poker.  A very old lady stopped me this morning and was shouting "well done girl, you go for it"  It just warms my heart as Grantham is not the friendliest place in the world.

So guys if you never watch tv tournaments again, please carry on watching the Ladies Uk Poker Open as it gets much better as the week goes on.  With heats 4 & 5 Monday and Tuesday, My Heat on Wednesday, the runners up heat Thursday and the final on Friday.  I for one am intruiged to see how the editing went and commentary comments about me obviously!!

What I don't like is the 'rich get richer' kind of policy.

Why should all these celebs get a free ride in a toruney that pays out thousands of pounds whilst all us grafters are grinding away for just the slightest sniff of an opportunity. They're not even THAT famous or THAT entertaining.

Neville Southall hasn't a clue how to play, something that he probably freely confesses, but, unlike Dave, Iwan, and co, he not only gets free entry, but also an appearance fee, which sucks big stylee. But still, If I was him, I'd take it in a jiffy.

Chili, in general are partially hydrogenated vegetable oils used in fish and chip shops? We eat fish and chips every friday but I'm thinking maybe we should cut down a bit. Has anyone ever come into your shop and asked this? I'm wondering if I'll get a funny look if I ask in my local chippy.

thanks

Just got back from the plaice (get it??).  errrmm maybe most people will give you a funny look. I can safely say no body in my area has ever asked that sort of question.  They just eat away - some twice a day. I'm not joking!!  In answer to your question we use 100% vegetable oil, no additives. I think you may be safe with once a week  :D.  I eat chips and/or fish every single day and i havn't turned into a barrell yet or nor have i gone doo lally!  >:?

Celebrity poker tournaments are thus crap because:

i watched part of a celeb show that had johnny vegas in it it was the most amusing time i have had watching poker the guy is an A list british celeb whose humour is hillarious and his attempts to bully the table were even funnier than a tikay missread

his poker skills were crap admittedly but more celebs like him in celeb heats could only add to the draw of poker

when vegas gets knocked out it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in a TV poker tournament. He says exactly what we have all wanted to say at some time or another instead we all just mutter nice hand, well played etc. I hurt myself laughing when I saw that episode and I am not even a Johnny Vegas fan.
My other favourite TV moments are both Helmuths when he "traps" toto and also thinks he may have been outplayed by Annie Duke. The guy is Tv gold whenever he blows up and whenever I see him on TV I just pray for him to get a badbeat so we can see another blowup.
