Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: lazaroonie on April 10, 2006, 12:42:07 AM If you have a really big room, then maybe plasma (they get really hot, and are very bright too close up).
Otherwise LCD - make sure it is HD Ready, and has an HDMI connector. Best makes ? Prolly tosh and sony...oh aye if you can afford an extra couple of 100's then the phillips amber light ones are the business. Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: bundle on April 10, 2006, 12:46:51 AM I have been told the life of a plasma is very short in relation to LCD. I have LCD and can't see how plasma could be better than this...

Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: Graham C on April 10, 2006, 01:09:18 AM sky has a couple of HD channels, not sure if you can view them or not
Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: rivered on April 10, 2006, 10:35:31 AM here you go.... http://plasma-vs-lcd.com/plasma-lcd-start.htm
this sums it up nicely. Best to get a t.v. which is HD ready as already mentioned, but also one that makes full use of the HD broadcasts (think it has to have horizontal pixel res of 1020 or something like that... most on sale now have around 700 so don't get full beneifts). Sky is launching their box fairly soon at around £200 i think. The best bit is that the first game of the worldcup is being broadcast in HD, so you have to get everything ready by June!!!! Anybody have one they really like and would recomend? Any advice welcome. Jason I had the same dilemma at Xmas and found that at this price bracket a Hitachi 42" HD ready Plasma was the best in terms of resolution and price. I also bought a warrantee from comet that covers me against the plasma dying. Comets warrantees are good, we had our previous TV (Toshiba 43" rear projection) repaired half a dozen times and after 4 and half years they gave up and gave me the full purchase price (£1300) to buy a new TV....At the advice of the sales rep I went for the Hitachi over a slightly more expensive(!) LCD because the resolution on the plasma was the best available (in comet at the time) for under £1500. http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/455_252425.html Hope that makes sense!! Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: mex on April 10, 2006, 12:50:23 PM HD won't make much diff in the states as broadcast quality is lower than European standard. HD in UK diff is huge, watching the demo at work where you can see grain on cards during a poker game!!! HD most deff, i think plasma is on its way out, they are past best after 3 or 4 years.
Title: Re: Plasma or LCD tv? Any advice Post by: Decider on April 11, 2006, 05:07:02 PM HD has been in the US for years and I think its Federal law that networks carry their channels in HD.
In the UK - HD over PAL is a huge change, like going from VHS -> DVD. Spending this kind of money, your best bet is getting a magazine like What Hi-Fi and having a look in there, they review loads of systems, budget/mid-range/high-end. Also, worth going into a specialist store, like Richer Sounds, the sales guys in here will usually do demos and give good advice. I wouldn't want to recommend a particular model at this price, or even LCD over Plasma - each model has different positives/negatives. Remember to get good cables though, the ones that come with the screens are low-end, even at high-end prices. |
