You premiership boys should spare a thought for us lower leaguers who lead their division all the way through to January, went unbeaten for 21 games and have now dropped into danger of missing the play-offs.

I just read somewhere that even if Spurs come 4th and Arse win the Champions League, Spurs WILL NOT qualify for the Champions League next season. :'(

To be fair you're probably right!!

But to lead for most of the first half of the season then sell our main striker but stay unbeaten and on top, then problems off the pitch and we can't put the ball in the back of the net.  Now we're 5 points off Automatic and if we lose a couple more could miss the play-offs. 

Now that's a bad season.  At least you'll have finished fourth in the premiership.

Yeah but, our arch rival wins the most prestigious trophy in club football and then takes our place in the tournament next season (£30million in lost revenue) even though we came above them.

It rivals 4 years ago when they took our £20million skipper for free, who at the time was the best defender in the world (I didn't turn the TV on for 3 days after that event :'( )

I think there are two slight flaws in your above statement here (this is said as a betting man from a neutrals prospective)

1) If spurs come 4th - we have more chance of Armageddon on Xmas day........

2) If Arsenal win the champions league - we have more chance of Spurs finishing 4th in the premiership..........

There's hardly much to shout home about claiming to be "the best of the rest" when finishing approx 30 points (10 victories in a 38 game season) behind the winners.

Everton were overjoyed to finish "best of the rest" last season and look what happened to them........

I feel your pain.  I'm busily watching Barnsley turn their 'push for an automatic promotion spot' into a slide towards 7th or 8th place in the table.

The top two have an unfair advantage over Spurs, so coming 4th is a great achievement.

Isnt that upto spurs to do something about it?

Granted the rest of the league dont have a Roman Abramovic to suddenly pump quadrazillions of pounds into their team but when Man United were the dominant force of English football most of their "stars" were made up from youth players and other home grown talent with the occasional quality signing thrown in.

Finishing 4th isnt really that good an achievement because apart from finishing above Arsenal (who this year have been very very substandard) all you have to boast about is finishing above the likes of Charlton, Aston Villa, Blackburn etc etc.

All you've managed to do is be the best of a very mediocre bunch none of whom have any consistency.

(this coming from a supporter of one of the above said mediocre teams).

Given that this year Spurs were beaten by the mighty Grimsby Town and Leicester in this years cup competitions i think the likes of Barcelona and AC Milan can sleep soundly.......... ;)

Chelsea and Manchester United have unrivalled spending power, with the former unrivalled in world football, not just the Premier League.

i agree but like i said when Man United were the dominant force most of their players we're players brought through the youth team (neville x2, scholes, giggs, sharpe, beckham etc etc) combined with some astute transfer market signings (Cantona, Sheringham, Cole, Sols Solsk Ole Gunnar, Bruce, Schmichael, Pallister etc etc).

True they have unrivalled spending power but then thats because they bring in revenue from all over the world through merchandising and being in the right markets (stocks/shares etc) - so more to do with good business rather than just having one rich beneficiary.

No reason why other clubs cant do the same........

I remember when Arse did the double in '98 and in that summer Ferguson "did a Chelsea" and went and spent £30million on Blomquist, Yorke and Stam. (more money than Wenger spent on his entire squad.)


I was more in the line of that their stadium is over twice the size as Spurs. Their brand is far more superior than Spurs, but they are the most supported team in England, where as Spurs are only 4th most supported team.

This is my point - their revenue is generated from the fact that they have the biggest stadium in England, they are the best "brand" in English football and they have more fans than everyone else. This then allows Alex Ferguson to go out and buy the better players.

So its up to the other clubs to (1) Increase their fan base, (2) Improve their brand and (3) Build bigger stadiums to allow their fans to watch them play - yes this takes time and money but Manchester United have been building steadily for years and years now and the more they build the bigger they get.

The rest of the teams need to do the same otherwise they will continually be playing for the title of "the best of the rest". There will always be one team that upsets the applecart every once in a while but at the end of the day it will always be the quality clubs that end up on top.

Manchester United are huge in many parts of the world due to:

1) The Munich disaster

2) David Beckham

3) The fact that they were years ahead of other teams when they became a "brand".

Catching up with them really isn't that simple - they have a 15 year headstart. Chelsea, with all of their titles, players and money aren't half the brand Manchester United are. The ONLY team close is Real Madrid. You cant just "increase the fan base" and "increase the brand" in football. Man U/Real/Barcelona/Liverpool are huge worldwide, you cant just expect Spurs to be able to untrench them.

IMO yes it is unfair. Put a wage cap in the premier league and lets watch Bolton win it!
