Title: Nottingham Gala's 10 beginners nights.
Post by: AdamM on July 20, 2005, 01:15:34 PM
I'm busy making T-shirts so haven't got time to do a full report but briefly;
69 runners (max 50) but well run by Rob and Olga.
total buy-ins 197 (incl reg) so 2000 pot
Just enough experienced players / dealers to keep the thing moving nicely.
Final called at 11.30ish. about 50/50 split vetween regular/semi-regular players and newbies.
new 30% prize structure (from memory) 600, 400, 300, 200, 150, 120, 100, 75, 50, 25 (ish, doesn't add up)
buffet break at midnight (free in a 10 comp, unreal)
I left it at 1.30 sih with 4 players left, including two newbies.
New blinds structure was excellent
plenty of play left at the final.
over all very friendly, competitive experience for all.
Two blondites at the final. RedSimon 8th-ish(sorry)
Phil 5th (1st Nottingham cash, well over due)
other blondites I saw, Malc-M (still not had a chance to speak to in person)
Bongo (not pointed out uuntil he left, will introduce myself next week.
Any others? didn't speak to any one but then many of us don't know each other by sight. next week I'll let you know what shuffleupshirt I'm wearing and it's be easier for everyone to spot each other pre-match. I was the guy wearing the Ace Magnet shirt last night. Phil had my poker players prayer shirt on (Dear Lord, please help me to break even, I need the money)

Well done Gala, top draw night.

Yeah, great night and can't belive i've finally cashed at Nottingham!

10th paid out 40 (not 25) which was decent as it meant you at least got your money back due to the 3 re-buys max structure. I think RedSimon came 10th and got that prize if i recall correctly.

Would love to know the final positions after I went out though, although I i didn't know names to be honest so not how much it will mean to me!

Thanks Dave, I saw that. It's quite scary giving up 'conventional' work to set up a business. It comes as somewhat of a relief to see some interest.

If anyone else out there intends to buy a shirt in september feel free to join up now and help my cnofidence level.

Yes i thought it was a great night, which seemed to be enjoyed by all. It was a bit different being one of the more experienced ones after a whole 3 months of live play, but it was nice to see new faces being attracted to the game. Also well done to the staff at notts for a well run event (tho im not sure Rob iused to his announcements being listened to). I will attempt to introduce myself in the future im rubbish at that kind of thing.

I got 9th ....50 not bad for just a top up  :D I think 10th got 40.

Generally it was a big plus to see people playing(though at variable standards!) without the all too familiar screaming contests.

Thumbs up to the Gala, Rob Olga etc:

Plus points:

Limiting rebuys, card system seemed to work.

Blind levels (Changed recently)

Experienced players generally being patient with newbies

7.30 pm start. Great to have a final start at 11.30 pm. Definitely worth considering bringing K O forward from 9.15 on other nights

Buffet at midnight  ;D I know I needed that food!

Possible improvements?

I thought an hour for rebuys was a bit short 'cos of the newness of people the game was a bit slower than usual. 90 minutes?

An old bug bear, smoking. I guess that one's a long term aim.

Overall very pleased.

Glad to see I brought you enough luck to final Simon  :D

It seems my mates finished 8th and 4th and so it was just me letting the side down by not winning a single hand.

All in all a great night, was good to put some names to faces aswell - I think a few of us will be coming next week as well.

Does anyone else think Malc M sounds a bit like Gordon Ramsay or is it just me?

Hello,  think I should introduce myself, I managed to come 1st in the tourney at gala last night( I was wearing a vintage v-neck red sweater).

Adam I dont know know if you remember me but almost a year ago I got hold of your email address from hendonmob forum and asked you some questions about tournies at gala( which you happily answered in detail), last night I finally got round to entering a tourny.

Now I know what you where wearing I believe started opposite you on the same table.

I Really not sure how I made final table, seemed to be short stacked all the way through freeze out period. playing a pocket pair or Ax all-in stragery. think luck must have been on my side because i came from behind when all-in a few times last night.

most of what happen on the final table seems like a blur, can't remember how i got heads up.

Nice work Jason. You definitely played that final well. When I left you were still (relatively) short and the #1 seat is/was very experienced Poker player.

Great to see Gala trying out a new structure.

I remember you Jason, glad you finally got round to it. You looked a bit nervous obviously but your game looked ok.

I made a 3 way chip count on my first visit Jan 2005 (second by 2000 chip) and there's been plenty between me and you. If you go in there with a decent basic understanding of the game and don't do anything stupid (like the 10,8 I couldn't put down tuesday >:()you can do ok. if you're there next week I'll be in the bar 6.30 for a coke, feel free to join us. we have the beginnings of a healthy little crew here. maybe a Notts B team  behind Tikays Notts A.

Hope any advice I offered proved useful.

Well done Jason. Sounds like you've outdone my first ever cash with a better one of your own!! Who came 2nd/3rd/4th by the way?

Title: Re: Nottingham Gala's first 10 beginners night.
Post by: AdamM on July 21, 2005, 12:11:32 AM
Bong said his mate came 4th which I assume was hte guy that joined us for breakfast. HU was with the guy in seat 1 so that leaves the guy who saw you off in 3rd a think.

Title: Re: Nottingham Gala's first 10 beginners night.
Post by: Jasonlanzoni on July 21, 2005, 12:46:15 AM
3rd was a guy called Jeff Wong.

Title: Re: Nottingham Gala's first 10 beginners night.
Post by: tikay on July 21, 2005, 04:41:11 PM
Well first off, can someone - maybe nightfly or Phoenix 96 - post the result up here please, we like to see who's done what. Or e-mail it to me, either by PM or my private e-mail, & I'll post it. Or perhaps if someone is at Gala tonight, they wll make a note & let us know.

As to the comp, WOW.

Free Buffet

Earlier Start

Flatter Prize Structure

Max 3 rebuys

Friendly atmo.

Sounds like Poker Heaven!

Well done Notts, GREAT stuff, you deserve it to succeed, and it will.

One has to think why can't some of these superb initiatives - especially flatter structure & earlier starts - spread to the regular comps. But for now, those - and NO SMOKING (cough cough), can wait, a BIG UP to Gala Notts, looks like you've hit the Customer Satisfaction Jackpot.

blonde will continue to support you as much as we can. Apologies we did not advertise this as requested - I was mid-Atlantic when the PM arrived - but with 69 runners for a 50 max comp, sounds like you did not need our help!

By the way Adam, I'll have a couple of shirts please. If you have a website, please remnind us of the address. I don't consider that spamming, lots of guys seem interested, & blonde owe you plenty, so you are OK.

Post by: Bongo on July 21, 2005, 05:43:02 PM
I had time for a longer chat with my mate who finished 4th today. It was his first time playing Poker in a casino and he really enjoyed it - he's planning on playing again next tuesday (if he gets away from his shop in time).

It was also nice to see how supportive the management were of the tournament.

What are the blind ante levels and how many chips do you start with?

Post by: redsimon on July 21, 2005, 07:47:19 PM
What are the blind ante levels and how many chips do you start with?

10 gets you 1000 chips. 60 minutes of 25/50 then 20 minute levels

50/100
100/200
150/300
200/400 (normally where I depart!)
300/600
400/800
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000 and beyond

Do not know the full result and i am not at work til Friday.
Most of the positions seem to be accounted for in this thread:

1st J Lanzoni - 600
2nd R Berridge - 400
3rd J Wong - 300
4th (Bongo's Mate No 1) - 200
5th P Denham - 150
6th ? -120
7th ? - 80
8th (Bongo's Mate No 2) - 60
9th Redsimon - 50
10th ? - 40

One quick note as to the 50 player max - The powers that be decided quite late on that there was no good reason to restrict the maximum to 50 when the main room has 7 tables. The maximum was actually 70 (and will be for next Tuesday) there was no time to post this info as the change was made very late in the day.
The main reason for the initial restriction of 5 tables was to ensure that we were able to monitor the 3 rebuys max efficiently enough.
It was actually anticipated that there would only be one of us running this competition and 5 tables is enough for one person.
As it turned out the Card system worked very well and we were able to cope with 7 tables very comfortably. (We actually felt that 5 each would have been possible so we may see a gradual increase in the numbers for this comp)

As i have already said it will be 70 next tuesday (Unless a last minute Act of God increases it again ;))

Thanks to all who supported this event - look forward to seeing you all again next week!

Cheers Rob. Excellent night and really well run.

Should be bringing a couple of extra myself next week with at least 3 or 4 more promising a visit within the next month.

Just gotta make sure I get there early enough this time!!

Are you still going to do a bit of dealer coaching at 6? Cos i might just get the day off to make sure I get down early if thats on.

I wish the Gala in Glasgow would adopt this way of working.

ie Earlier start, flatter prize structure, better blind increases, 3 rebuy limit...

I'd play a hell of a lot more if they did.

We ALL wish that ALL casinos would!

But we are working on it.

Genuine, persistent, polite, but firm, lobbying is oh so slowly getting us there. It's quite extraordinary that it is so hard to get the Casino's to give their Clients (that's us) what we want for OUR money. If I'd run my business like that, the Clients woulda disappeared like a shot.

But don't give up. The battle is on, & the points are slowly being notched up. Trust me, it WILL happen. Take a while, like, but it WILL.

As an aid to lobbying - could someone who works at Notts (Nightfly?) write down how the night was structured and give an honest assessment of how good it was please.

I'd give that to the people that run the cardroom at the Riverboat as a gentle suggestion.

Don't do that, it was Tikay who called her a bloke!! (And Michelle scares me). She knows who I am - she christened me Paradise.

Anyway - I get the crap tables all the time ;D

Seriously though I'd love it if the format being discussed on this thread was used in there, I'd play a lot more often. Dunno how much support Michelle gets from the management in there though :(

Just a quick update for tonights competition... the second room is available and there are two supervisors meaning that the competition can accomodate up to 100 players and not the 70 as previously advised.

Don't forget that last entry is at 7.15pm for a 7.30 start

look forward to seeing a few of you there :)

I have not ignored this request... will summarise structure and send you a PM in the next couple of days...

The structure worked just as well with 98 players as it did with 69 last week. Another successful comp... long may it continue.

Will also post the results once i have enjoyed a much needed sleep.
