Title: tipping dealers
Post by: Claw75 on April 23, 2006, 05:01:48 PM
Off to Vegas for the first time in a few days and likely to be playing a few hands of cash poker whilst I'm there.  Can someone tell me the etiquette on tipping the dealers? Should I tip everytime I win a pot, or just when I win a big pot.  How much should I tip - is it a rough %age of the pot?  Also, presume tips are expected if you make the money in a tournament?  Finally, should I tip in chips or cash?

I know I sound like a stress bunny, but I worry about these things!!!!

When I was there I followed the crowd a bit because I wasn't sure.

Blackjack and table games seem different to poker - if you get blackjack it seems they tip, if you win a good hand its another tip!

In poker the tourneys seemed to allow for tipping within the structure - but I'm not sure if its the same I every casino. In the cash games we tipped if we got a good hand. As for how much - I tip better now that I've read Jens blog about her time as a dealer.........but again I tended to follow the crowd in Vegas and tip the average.

Have a great time, aren't you getting married at the same time? If so have a blast!

If I recall correctly me and flushy were tipping 300% the size of the pot at one stage - just because it really angered the locals  ;goodvevil;

lol yeah that was good fun!

Next time i went back i went with the aptly named 'crazy dave' and we got in a 'tip war' before the new dealer even dealt! Basically i gave him $1 he gave him $2 so i gave him $3 we kept doing that asking to be his prefered player! I think i gave in at something like $14. He was still a grumpy bugger!

Must admit I never tip dealers.
It's funny how most people seem to tip certain jobs. I always tip a cabbie a waitress (unless service bad) and a barber but no one else. Not sure who makes the list of jobs to tip but sadly my job isn't on the list. :(

I really get hacked off tipping dealers - I mean any edge you have is low enough without them eroding it even further.

The worst way of tipping I see at blackjack is people playing chips for the dealer - I mean how stupid is that - if they lose then the casino gets the tip, yeah like they need it.

And Im supposed to flip some grumpy old sod $5 every time i hit a decent hand when grinding out for hours playing $3/6 limit ? aye right....

Keep a stock of tea bags with you & hand one over to the dealer with the cheery comment "have a drink on me" .....(old Tommy Cooper joke)  rotflmfao rotflmfao

I'm sure they will see the funny side????

Have a great time in Vegas.

I never tip taxi drivers. They charge too much anyway - I only tip my barber. She's been cutting my hair for 15 years...you would think she would get it right by now, though...

I always tipped every pot I won, depending on the size of pot to be honest

If you tip on blackjack or table games, they can put the tip on your box, added bit of luck for them and you
to double their tip :0) pretty cool

Taxi drivers in vegas are pretty grumpy, in 2 weeks holiday there, only had one chatty driver, rest didn't want to know

Just remember to get your players card and hand it in on table games, slots and poker room so that you can earn your VIP status ready for next time, so gamble away ;)  and don't be scared to ask for a buffet meal if you've been playing blackjack for 30mins or more :)

Have a great time you'll love it :)

in excalibur they have a curry or chilli which you just grab whilst playing poker

not so sure about rest of other places, to be honest i played 4 hours of poker a day in excalibur for my free room, so that my holiday only cos the flight,  room free, and meals free courtesy of blackjack, let it ride or paigow :)  fantastic
more gambling money hehe

thanks for the advice everyone - I guess I'll just watch for a bit and see what everyone else is doing.

You'll probably see a lot of variety in what people do, so find something you're comfortable with and stick with it.

FWIW, my 'system' is to tip for every pot I win with the lowest denomination chip in play, which is usually a $1 chip because of the rake (i.e. in a $10/20 game, they will have to break up a $5 chip in every hand for the drop).  In some low stakes games they have quarters or half dollar coins in play so you can use these if you feel a $1 chip is too big a % of the pot.  I generally don't tip for split pots or when I steal the blinds.  If I win a huge pot I probably tip 2 or 3 chips but normally I try and stick to a consistent amount regardless of the amount won.  Some players don't tip small pots and tip more for big ones but I find that this means some dealers miss out completely while others get more.  Using my method, most dealers will end up with a similar amount after their 30 minute stint.

Sheriff

PS: If you cash in a tournament out there you'll probably be asked to leave a tip for the dealers.  Chances are there's already been a drop taken for them (particularly in rebuy events where the add-on is normally 'for the dealers') so just be aware of how much has already been taken and don't feel pressured into tipping over the odds.

The norm is to tip $1 every time you win a pot. However, if there isn't much in the pot (maybe only the blinds) then obviously you shouldn't tip. If you win a large pot you might want to give the dealer a bit more.
In tournaments they generally withold 3% of the prize pool for tournament staff so there isn't really a need to tip on top of that unless you feel that the dealers and tournament staff had done an exceptional job.

dont worry about what everyone else is doing, if you think the dealer is a nice guy and would appreciate the extra money then tip him.

I know I sound like a stress bunny, but I worry about these things!!!!

I know this might sound tight but two friends and I worked out we had tipped around $800 playing cash games on a Vegas trip at a $1 a time and vowed between us not to tip at all on our next trip.

We got a few comments and funny looks as the whole country is seemingly hooked on tips but we simply explained that we would rather tip at the end of the dealers session and did occasionally tip at this point if the dealer had been good.

If you are playing smallish stakes cash games you should not be giving away tips as this will eat into your profit.

If you enter a tourney I thinik you can leave a tip should you win one of the higher prizes.

Just my view.

It depends i think most of us go to vegas to have a good time rather than to break the bank in a low limit cash game....profit for me in vegas is based on how much i win, and if i lose, how many free drinks did i get though......

For comps, i won an event in Binions and having realised after the dealers already had a cut i regret leaving a nice tip.
