Title: Ducks! Post by: Rupert on April 24, 2006, 04:19:53 PM The duck that lives by our pond has had ducklings! All look to be well, bit of shell in the nest but I think they all hatched ok. 12 ducklings and mother have been waddling round the garden happily all day.

Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Rod Paradise on April 24, 2006, 05:03:46 PM Anyone roasting Duck (or goose) SAVE THE FAT. This is THE best fat to make roast tatties in, or even chips if you have enough. It's not hugely healthy - but it's absolutely delicious!!!
Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: AndrewT on April 24, 2006, 05:08:22 PM The ducks are very cute, but I'm more impressed by the family of about 30 white planks that also seem to be out having a stroll - their mother must be just out of shot on the right.

Yes deffo mate sounds awesome!! The ducks seem to have gone a bit AWOL from the garden at the moment but I suspect they will be back later, probably gone for a waddle round the fields Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Sark79 on April 24, 2006, 07:03:34 PM Excellent pics. I love ducks. It must be great living near there. One day, I would love to have a house where I can have a large duck pond. I have always wanted that. 8)

Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: tikay on April 24, 2006, 11:04:47 PM What LOVELY pics. More please! When I was golfing a lot, what with golf courses having a lot of ponds, it was heaven-like at this time of year, ducklings everywhere. Many was the round of golf abandoned when I spotted some ducklings. Kedleston Park, Derby, a fine Golf Course, had hundreds of Geese, while my club, Royal Ormonde, had several pairs of swans, & plenty of sparrowhawks & kestrels. At Morley Hayes, they had a Heron - awesome! Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Sark79 on April 24, 2006, 11:15:11 PM Heron are nice birds. Although if you have a fish pond, they can be abit of trouble. My Dads fish pond came under attack from a Heron last year. We got round the problem by building a wire mesh grill that fits over the pond. The Heron occasionally comes back, but he cannot find away round the problem of the grill.
I told my barber about the Heron and he warned me that they work in gangs.. " watch them son, they work together. One will hold up the wire mesh cover and the others will grab the fish". He was serious and he isn't insane :D. I have an image in my mind of a load of ned Herons terrorising local gardens now. Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: matt674 on April 24, 2006, 11:18:38 PM Heron are nice birds. I disagree - if you leave them just a minute too long they become very dry. Even with sauce it can ruin a good meal....... Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Sark79 on April 24, 2006, 11:19:53 PM I thought monkeys were vegetarians?
Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: matt674 on April 24, 2006, 11:23:47 PM I overheard the lions down by the watering hole after a 3 course (heron, gazelle & zebra) feast........
Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Sark79 on April 24, 2006, 11:24:15 PM I see :D
Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: mex on April 25, 2006, 12:53:44 AM interesting fact 1 Monkeys ar omnivourous, and actually display canablisitic tendencies.
2 Matts little dancing monkey actually appears to be a member of the lesser ape family, (not a monkey) 3 (now i don't know if this is true but was told last week) Male ducks cannot Quack, they honk or bleet, only females Quack Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: Sark79 on April 25, 2006, 06:00:03 AM Yea, you are right. I remember a bbc documentary about chimps in the wild being hunted by a gang of monkeys.

Livens the game up no end imho! ;D ;D Title: Re: Ducks! Post by: ifm on April 25, 2006, 12:10:58 PM I killed a duck playing golf at the forest of Arden once, nothing to be proud of though. (the duck wasn't playing BTW)
