Title: A Very Special Poker Tournament
Post by: The Truth on April 25, 2006, 07:22:56 AM
Sunday the 14th May sees the running of a very special poker tournament in aid of Poker4Charity / Game for Life. The tournament itself is a standard regular run of the mill £20 buy-in with £10 re-buys affair.

That’s not the special bit. What makes this tournament special is how the funds raised will be spent. As many of you know poker player Maureen McDonnell, who posts on this forum as ‘the nun’ has a 15 month old grandson, Reece who was born with a bowel problem and he had to have all but 17cm removed. This has meant he has been reliant upon machines but these have made him very poorly at times. With Reece spending so much time in hospital life has been tough on his mother Stacey, Maureen and the rest of the family.

As a children’s charity that is so heavily supported by the poker community how can we not want to offer our assistance when a child related to a poker player has been so sick? That is why the proceeds of this event will be spent by Game for Life in consultation with Maureen and Stacey. The money raised may be spent specifically on Reece, they may go to the service providers who have helped Reece and Stacey over the last 15 months or it may be a combination of the two. Every penny from this tournament will either help Reece, his family or kids just like him. The poker community looking out for one of their own. That’s special in my book.

The tournament itself will start at 1pm on Sunday 14th May and will be held at London’s prestige cardroom, The Western Club.

More details will appear later about structures etc. – need to speak to the P4C senior Tournament Director.

In the meantime if you are a deffo attendee please email your name and details to angienewth@poker4charity.org.

Also if any individual or company would like to sponsor this event please PM me.

Thank you for your support.

Excellent news - first pint on me Curtis

Forgot to mention The Western Club now has a bar open to 2.30am - those that visited in it's early days may remember it as a dry venue - but no more ;tk;

I will definately be attending this event and i would hope than any poker player that is able to attend and has a heart will also be there.
If you have children yourself i am sure you will make the time to help improve the quality of life for a fellow players less fortunate child particularly when to do so involves you simply playing the game you love.

dont sit on your bottoms get up and make this small effort.

Thats GREATTTTTTTTTTT news Paul.

With Joe Beevers already committing himself to this one we are already looking at some line up for a £10 rebuy event.

Having never been to The Western Club myself (but heard fantastic things about it) does anyone have any experiences of the club?

Just read about this,a real worthy cause.
I will move earth to be there,I have been interested to hear about Reece's fight since I was told about whilst chatting to tikay in Brighton.
Maureen has allowed us to follow reece's progress, through her postings,so maybe we can now offer some tangable support.
And it will be lovely to finally get to meet "The Nun" at last.

TheTruth mentioned a while back that he would like to organise a tourny in aid of Reece, but then things went quite so I thought maybe it was not going to be possible. Now BANG.. here it is happening.. I have discussed this with Stacey, and we can not express our excitment over it. We are so appreciative  that this is taking place, it goes beyond words. Stacey was a young mum who has coped admirably from the start with Reece's condition, and has never asked for anything, Charitable or other. She takes it like she takes everything.. in her stride. But the star in all this is Reece ........ Reece has survived,  in his short life,  more surgery and infections that probably most of this poker comunity put together will ever have to go through, but each time he comes out smiling, and get this.. from very early months he recognised the tune.. Your Beautiful, James Blunt and dances away to it in a manor that would bring a tear to even Colchester Kev's eyes.We have had him home since last thursday but also know that any time he can get a central line infection which can cause a threat to his life.  For ever person that attends , whether to play or just be there, means so much I don't think you will ever know. I  Thank TheTruth for doing this and also everyone else involved in organising it and attending.. In Advance .. :respect:Thanks Guy n Dolls..   TheNun  xxxxxxx

Can I just say i wish I was able to play but I am on a course in France.

I have just been onto the G4L web site which I haven't done before today, and although I haven't got any children it really did bring a tear to the eye. Well done to all the poker sites who have donated but especially all the individuals who have helped it all happen.

Here we are moaning about our slow broadband connection etc etc and there are kids out there to whom a cuddle and a sign of affection is priceless while they go through their own personal pain and suffering. I feel very humbled.

I will check it out. I am with tank on not wanting to do poker on the Saturday. Was thinking of maybe having a ruby. If enough people up for it maybe we can get a resturant to give a wee discount BUT we all agree to put normal price in the kitty - the excess going to 'The Reece Fund'.

Just a suggestion.

A sponsor has been found for this event and a cracking deal negotiated. I cannot say anymore at this stage but expect an announcement very soon.

Also a reminder from Angie - if you are looking to attend please email or PM her. The response so far has been amazing but is important for us to have an idea on numbers prior to the day of the event.

Thank you all for your support.

Poker4Charity is very pleased to announce that Spin Palace Poker are the official sponsor of this event.

The event will be called 'The Poker4Charity London Charity Shield in conjunction with Spin Palace Poker'.

The details of the deal are that Spin Palace are making a donation of £3,500 to Game for Life and are paying a marketing fee to Poker4Charity which will bring the total package to just over £4,000. Spin Palace Poker will also be holding a televised online MTT with the reg fees going to Game for Life in June DTBC.

I would like to publicly thank Spin Palace Poker on behalf of all those involved with Game for Life. Special thanks must also go to Blondite AndrewT for persuading his employers to part with the cash.

The money donated means that Game for Life will be able to assist those service providers who have helped Reece so much more.

As I'm sure you're all aware G4L/P4C do tremendous work to help disadvantaged children. Compared to the amount of tireless work and effort that Davey, Angie and others do, agreeing to sponsor the event really is nothing in comparison.

I'm sure it will be a great day of poker.

Maureen has always had my, & many other blondes, "blessing", & will continue to do so. Moral support is important too, & I know that many, many. blondes will be with Maureen, Stacey & Reece all the way.

425? We have already fixed our Venue schedule for May, but I will have a chat with the suits on Wednesday.

A silly question I'm sure, but is the Western Club and the Hotel inside the congestion charge area?  I know the charge is not in effect on Sundays, but need to know whether I should pay it for the Monday?

Thanks

Nah you are fine Jo, its before the congestion zone,  basically M40 change to A40 London
on the left hand side before the shell garage

Maureen its really easy
M1, M25 then M40 London
the M40 goes into A40 and its just after hanger lane on the left hand side

if you've driven past the shell garage you've gone too far

I invited a friend to come along on Sunday and he's replied as follows:

"I would be interested in principle, but I can't see how the tournament would work if all proceeds go to charity. What is the incentive to play correctly when it doesn't matter if you're not going to win anything anyway?"

I said that I presumed there would still be a prize pool to play for, and that the 'proceeds' would be the profit that would usually go to the club, the sponsorship and donations etc.  Can someone confirm this please?

Title: Re: A Very Special Poker Tournament
Post by: The Truth on May 12, 2006, 04:17:51 PM
Apologises for not explaining how a standard P4C event works.

The Buyin is £20 of which £10 goes to the prizepool and £10 goes to the charity. Re-buys and top ups are £10 of which £5 goes to the prizepool and £5 goes to the charity. This is effectively the same as saying the prizepool is raked at 50% for charity.

The prizepool's can be well worth winning though - ask Ian Bradley who won £2000 at last years North East Charity Shield.

Hope that explains things and apologises for any confussion.

just realised it is a different one.  I'm planning on walking to the Western from the tube station - tfl journey planner says that is 20 minutes but I usually find it well over-estimated - if Travelodge is practically next door, then should be walkable.  Otherwise, tfl website will give you bus routes.

With Kev, Flushy, Robert HM and, captain 63 re-buys, Joe Beevers in the field, there will be more value in this comp than any other in the history of t'world. Even with 50% of the prize pool going to a fantastic cause. Big up to the Western for laying on the venue free of charge.

Just got back, had a great time, thanks to everyone involved and good to meet up with some familiar and new faces.
I went out in 12th, which I don't mind, but you should see the fish at the final table, including a pie eater from essex!  :D

Just got home from a cracking day out.  Somehow managed to win the thing at a final table full of Blondes (from memory TightEnd, Alfa666, Wardonkey and Colchester Kev!!!!!!!)  TightEnd managed to break Joe Beevers' record and ended up at 68 rebuys, which meant that 2nd place still resulted in a small loss for the day!!  :respect:

Loads of familiar faces there, everyone seemed to be having fun.  The Western did a cracking job in hosting this and it proved to be a great venue for poker (including the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat on at a poker table!)

Other memorable moments - Flushy bought a massive oversized wine glass in the auction which someone else managed to smash at the end of the evening, I managed to win a raffle prize with each of the 5 tickets I'd bought on the day (thus ending 31 years of abject failure where raffle tickets were concerned), Kev was paid £40 to wear a Game4Life beanie through the entire event.......In short it was another great P4C event in the company of a lot of great and generous people.

Many thanks to Davey, Angie and the rest of those involved in the organisation.  Best wishes to TheNun, Stacey and of course to Reece, for whom the funds were being raised today.

Fantastic venue, good company, 68 rebuys  ;tk; and 2nd place......and best of all a lot of ££ raised for an excellent cause for one of our own.

Still recovering from the shock of Colch reaching the final table and losing yet again to Sheriff Fatman heads up depsite starting with a 3-1 chip advantage.....the shame, the shame!!!!

Just arrived back from the event, having spent a chilly night in a lay-by on the A1 (after numerous failed attempts to keep eyes open while driving!).

I would like to add my thanks and congratulations to the organisers, venue, sponsors, players and everyone else involved for their part in a special day.

Congrats’ to The Sheriff for using my chips wisely at the heads up stage with ‘Twiggy’, and to Twiggy himself for truly stunning/commendable display of generosity during the re-buy stage. :respect:

Well done to all involved and best wishes Best wishes to Maureen, Stacey and Reece.

And to add my bit as well - many many thanks to everyone involved - my first blonde event and my girlf and I had a great time... live poker has always been too serious in my experience, but Kev & Flushy's antics amongst lots of other great banter assured this was not the case.  Much respect to the Western for laying it all on - great venue, and to the P4C lot who put a lot of time in to organising it all.

Thanks everyone, good luck and bring on the next event!

Cheers,

Joe & Sheridan

Thanks to everyone involved with Game4life ,  all very special people doing a fantastic job !!!.
Great to meet a few more Blondes, on this occasion i dont think i insulted or upset anybody and i can only apoligize for not doing so , and rest assured i'll get you next time.  :D

Great to see Mr tightend get a well deserved 2nd place, Mind you any idiot can run deep in a tourney if you re-buy 68 times !!!!!!!!!! :D He started with £10.......then £20........then the big red £50's came out, what a truely generous bloke he is.

Even after defeat to Mr Sheriff having a 3-1 cheaplead (he also offered to chop it 50/50 at this point, and take the trophy)
How nice is that !. However Curtis politely refused as he also wanted that pretty little trophy sitting at home, that's how much it mean't to the both of them.....now that's two great gladiator's doing battle ..........No that's a load of B*ll*x, it's only a silly card game ! :D.

Well done to the both of them.

Thanks to dave & angie for such a nice time.

Well it went like this

I had a result or two last week and I was late leaving home, so I took a bundle of £ hurriedly and drove down

thetank was dealing and I got big hand after big hand cracked...we all know AA nine ways is pretty useless....with about half an hour to go of the rebuys I still had no chips! At this point I stupidly asked tank if I could have 10 rebuys at once. Well he wasn't going to say no was he?

then i kept losing with made hands to outdraws

So that was that!

Wanted to play proper poker in the freezeout stage so bought another 10 at the break and went from 5000 chips at the start to 70% of the chips in play heads up....was delighted. However I needed to win or equal split 1st and 2nd to get out of it but Sheriff the fish did me cos he wanted to play to win that trophy! By that stage all I wanted was the trophy too! Shallow? Moi?.

All in all, only £150 out of pocket and Reece gets the £ needed...Result!!!

Finally, I was very proud to be asked by Davey and Ang to take the various electronic equipment to the Pasque Hospice for terminally ill children in Luton this week. I know this will be a very upsetting experience but am happy to help in distributing some of the goods bought with proceeds from events like this

Had a fantastic day, it was great to meet Maureen and Mr Nun and Stacey, oh and Davey for thinking Mr Nun was Maureen's son  :blonde: and Well Done Stacey for winning the STT  :D

A few people made me laugh yesterday.....

Tank after receiving his certificate and telling his joke "how do you sell a pig to a deaf guy"

Matt who bought just about everything in the auction, including a coat which would easily house a family of 6.

Kev proudly telling me and suzanne he had made the final table....with shouts of Fish and B***ard.

Vince's girlfriend eating his kit kat, only to tell him it was for his own good  :D

Cupcake for not letting me cut his label off with my teeth.

Jamie for outbidding himself in the auction.

Jo and Pav playing snap, with Jo nearly breaking Pav's fingers.

So many stories and laughs I would be here all day  ;goodvevil;

Thanks to Mel for TD'ing, Jane is now official raffle ticket seller, flushy you gonk for breaking that glass that i wanted grrrrrrr.

It was a fantastic day and all for a great cause, Many Thanks to everyone including Andrew from Spin Palace for sponsoring the event.

I have decided not to name and shame for 24 hours as there is a situation that needs to be sorted first. Many people will already have guessed which chain it is given their previous objections to the work we do, but I  ask please do not name them on the forum, at least until we have sorted out the other indirect issues that need sorting.

Er, yeah.

I was just saying my goodbyes to people before I went to catch the last tube home and had my holdall over my shoulder. As I turned towards the door I felt a slight brush against something.

It's strange how your perception of time alters in certain situations. I turned round in time to see the glass slowly and gently make its way down to the plush floor, where its fall was soflty cushioned by the luxurious carpet it smashed into a million bits.

I stood there staring at the mess as the room fell silent. Silent, that was, except for the raucous laughter emanating from Cupcake, who came running across to offer his condolences rip the piss out of me. The other big glass that the Western owned was swifty taken in and hidden.

I waited for a bit to help with the clear up once a dustpan and brush arrived, but none appeared to be coming. Wary of the time in catching my train, but conscious of the mess I'd just made, I was sort of paralysed, not knowing what to do. Thankfully, Cupcake offered some sagely advice - 'I'd just leg it if I were you'.

So I did - I went off to the station, to find I had indeed missed the last tube back into Central London. I got the tube to White City, then walked to Shepherd Bush Green, where I waited for a bus to Marble Arch, then another one to Newington Green, and then had to walk from there - it took hours.

Result, not only am I wracked with guilt, but I am absolutely shattered (pun intended) after getting nowhere near enough sleep.

Flushy, I will reimburse you for the glass - I suppose it saved you having to get the damn thing home.

Had a great time, thanks to Angie and Davey for organising it all.

A few bits I remember:

Tanks first words of his speech "Piece of Piss"
Matts shouts everytime he rivered someone, in his posh voice!
Roberts face when I asked him "How about I sit on your lap and we can do it together?" (Talking about dealing of course!)
The disaster of Flushys glass smashing
Richard, Kev, Andy and I in one car, Mel, Jo and Thomas in the other... all searching for food late on a sunday night!
Jo, Kev, Richard, Andy and I in the tiny travelodge lift and some plonker on level 1 has called for it, I say "What idiot needs the lift", the doors open and who is it? James! (drunk as a skunk!) so he meets us on level one and we all spend ages in our room eating KFC and waking up our neighbours!
Then as they're all leaving Kev says "Poppet... room 314 tomorrow morning!" LOL!!

Excellent weekend :D

Sorry if I seemed a little anti-social, but I was feeling VERY poorly, and ended up calling it a day rather early and headed off to bed ( I think I put my last bit of energy into power selling the raffle tickets, threatening to body search takes it out of a girl you know)

Well done to Angie and Davey for all the hard work, and a the Western for putting up with us all at no charge. (Oh and a big thanks to my babe Flushie, for putting up with a poorly me all weekend too! xx)

Somewhere between the "spirit of Blonde" camaraderie amongst the players, the Western Club's excellent facilities and Davey and Angie pulling out all the stops, how could it have been otherwise?  :D

Thanks to everyone involved for a wonderful event, it was truly a pleasure to be part of it, and my best wishes to Maureen, Stacey and Reece.

Thanks to everybody for turning up to P4C at the Western.

What can I say but fantastic to see everybody supporting the Reece fund and thank you for digging into your pockets .  £4750 was the total amount for the day, so 1/2 to prize fund and 1/2 to P4C .

Thanks go to Poppet, Tank, Flushy and Jo for dealing all day, and then Robert "the lawyer" who I had to tell off for looking at peoples cards!!!  Naughty.  If i'd had a ruler you would have been slapped ;)

Western, fantastic venue and will be there in a week to help them deal for the festival

Also can I say that the owners of the Western, dug £300 out of their pockets to help Reece.  What a lovely gesture

Here is the picture of the wine glass broken :)  Sorry its a bit of dodgy piccy but camera phone was nearest thing hehe

See u all soon
