Title: I HATE mechanics Post by: bundle on April 27, 2006, 06:18:30 PM After spending $1787 on a transmission rebuild for my truck, and then hearing a banging noise underneath a couple of weeks later, and being told I lost my warranty for taking it out of town. It has since been parked up, with me giving it the occasional kick when I pass by it.
I think that all mechanics will rip you off at every opportunity, but yesterday I was told about this guy that is top notch, “he’s great, and he’s a Christian” well I don’t see how being a Christian is going to help me, but the idea was that he would be straight with me. So I give the old boy a call and he is as nice as can be, I tell him about the recent work that’s been done and he’s telling me how it would have only been $1400 with him and unlimited miles for 1 year. So 20 min later he has a tow truck on its way to pick it up. I start it up and drive it around the block a few time and it seems to me that the tranny is fine, it seems more like the drive shaft knocking when you pick up speed, and causing the truck to bump, Oh well I’m sure he will tell me. So I get a call today, “Hi its Clive, I have looked at the truck and it seems to me it’s the bridge in the transmission, I can have it done for you today sir” Great how much will it be, $1450 “WHAT” Now earlier the old bastard had told me he would have charged $1400 for a rebuild, now he wants more for fixing a bridge. So I ask him how the hell is this right. Ah he says, “well we need to do a bit of work to your drive shaft too” Like what I ask Well where it meets the diff there is bla bla bla and it needs to be fixed. No I had not mentioned my thoughts to him about it being the drive shaft so, I ask him, well how much to do this and Don’t touch the transmission, Just leave that part alone, he then tells me “ah well we really need to do it all because with it being up on the lift running we don’t know anything about the noise, because there isn’t any” “WHAT’ “yeah we would need to run it on the street under a load to know where the noise is coming from” Ok so how the hell can you tell me the bridge needs fixing? Well it’s a guess, let me call you back. I HATE mechanics Title: Re: I HATE mechanics Post by: vinni on April 27, 2006, 07:30:59 PM youve been ripped of big style ,

Title: Re: I HATE mechanics Post by: Trace on April 27, 2006, 07:39:19 PM My brothers a mechanic and he's a robbing bar steward too.
Gets me to put a bid on an old Austin car he wants for banger racing, he doesn't have an Ebay account, so I do it for him with mine. He wins it, £50, knowing my brother of old, I'm waiting for the money, Monday he says, then I phone him Tuesday, he says, yeah, yeah I know I'm sorting it. Phones him today as guy selling car has emailed me to ask why I haven't paid yet - I went the bank and there's no money in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I'm about to get my first negative feedback cos of the little sh1t! Title: Re: I HATE mechanics Post by: Tonji on April 27, 2006, 07:48:26 PM Bundle, you've got me worried about the knocking sound under my car now. Like you I hate mechanics & will avoide them as much as possible (same with dentist,... i guess its a pain thing). Suppose I'll wait until something falls off or starts smoking.
Title: Re: I HATE mechanics Post by: bundle on April 27, 2006, 08:11:22 PM Thanks Vinni but I live in the USA right now so a bit of a trek for you. I know what you’re talking about though; a few years ago I would have had no problems taking care of it, standing outside his house at 6am waiting for him to leave for work with sleep in his eyes. Unfortunately several years of let’s say being away, makes you think more about the real value in getting your own back.
Now I just hope that the saying: what comes around goes around is true.
