Title: Help - Suggestions Post by: GlasgowBandit on April 30, 2006, 03:56:27 AM I have noticed something in my game which I find wuite alarming. And that is I often try and take out the short stack when there is no need for me to do so. What I tend to do is raise and if re-raised although I know I am behine I am prepared to stick in my chips to try and take a player out - I don't like this element when should I be trying to take out short stacks ??

Title: Re: Help - Suggestions Post by: the bus on April 30, 2006, 05:31:52 AM What I mean is that, so long as the re-raise isn't that big (and how big can it be if they're short stacked) then the pot odds and equity to be gained from knocking a player out usually add up to a call being the right thing.

when you say you are calling you have to have a hand that at least has a chance, Like 8 J or some other crap, if you are calling these re raises with 36 and 24 then your just going to keep doubling them up. what i'm saying is give yourself at least a fair chance at taking them out Title: Re: Help - Suggestions Post by: GlasgowBandit on April 30, 2006, 11:33:56 AM But it is also a way to donk off your chip lead. when you say you are calling you have to have a hand that at least has a chance, Like 8 J or some other crap, if you are calling these re raises with 36 and 24 then your just going to keep doubling them up. what i'm saying is give yourself at least a fair chance at taking them out 90 % of the time I am going in with a faitly decent hand but seem to get oudrawn, and then I feel like kicking myself for although my hand is good I am maybe giving away 2/3k to a player who would eventually blind himself out. If may not cost a lot of ships to have a go at knocking some dude out but all I need is for it to happen 5 times in a row and its carnage - ship stack sems decimated. IMO the actual problem is putting in the raise in the first place. You need to be aware of the stack sizes on your table and not raise with trash if you're putting the short stack an automatic calling situation. Once you have a player on your table who's in all-in or fold territory raising to 60/70% of their stack isn't going to make them fold, you're guaranteeing yourself a call from them with pretty much anything so make sure you've at least got a half decent hand. If you haven't then chuck the hand away or just limp in and be prepared to pass to the all in. If the player hasn't quite got to the all-in or fold stage then by all means consider putting them all in, they're a lot more likely to pass if they have to call all-in rather than pushing themselves but you do need to be prepared to have your trash called if you try this. Hope that made sense, it's a bit garbled, I need to wake up |
