Title: UK Broadband
Post by: bundle on May 05, 2006, 04:59:09 AM
A few questions

What is the standard waiting time to be hooked up for broadband in the UK?

What company do you suggest for the Berkshire area?

Will they need a computer to test the hook up on the date of install?

The reason I ask this is because I will be bringing my PC with me from the USA ( my mum doesn’t have one at her home)  and I was wanting to have the service up and running when I land ?

Cheers guys

2 weeks, give or take a fortnight.

No clue, BT Broadband give a good service up 'ere in mountain country though.

Not necessary, if she has a standard BT phoneline, they usually don't have to even go in the hoose at all to set it up.

Hes not joking about the two weeks give or take two weeks, mine took about 5 weeks in total (although i live out in the sticks).
If you want it up and running when you land get the ball rolling now and probably best to go with bt.
Good Luck!

I'd recommend you go with Nildram as your ISP - they are the best ISP in the UK. BT Broadband are pretty poor, customer service is dire.

You don't require a PC to test, but you will need to make sure your local exchange supports broadband. 99% do these days.

I'd recommend going wires only (ie. don't be swayed by the ISP supplying you with kit, you will normally dump it anyway), and buying a cheap wireless linksys router/modem, dabs.com for that. You never know when you'll want wireless, so worth having just in case.

This ones' pretty neat.

You probably want to find someone who doesn't have a minimum contract length if you're not going to be here for 12 months.
