Title: Swapping
Post by: TightEnd on July 25, 2005, 02:42:44 PM
no, not that type of swapping

what are people's views on swapping %ages with others in tourney's? Is there anything wrong with it?

do you do it? how often? do you think it causes you any dilemnas? have you seen it compromise otherwise fair tournaments?

and finally, is there or should there be any way it can be regulated/controlled/publicised?

Lots of questions, I'm sorry, but a particular occurrence which I am not going to publicise is exercising my mind

Good question... and one that i gave a great deal of thought to in vegas .... before the wsop main event a lot of the guys i met out there were swapping their 1% 5% etc.   and i couldnt understand why some of these guys were swapping up to 20% of themselves with people who to be quite frank...will never cash in that type of event as long as they have a hole in their arse.   Now i understand that some people have a rolling interest in each other when they play the same comps, and thats fair enough .... but as for the other people... i say wait until you make the money, then swap as many % as you feel comfortable with. As for the collusion/same village worries, It is bound to happen as vile as it is, but you will find that most players would gladly knock their mate out of a comp purely for the bragging rights involved .

Tikay and Julian took me to a 250 rebuy in sheffield last year, which was my first trip out of the 20/30 rebuys at Notts. they offered to swap 5% each with me which I thought was odd myself given the step up in game I was undertaking. Julian was sat two to my right and was relentlessly raising into me. no soft play there I can tell you. I got my own back sat to his right a while ;ater in a Notts 100 game. I like the idea of swapping a % with friends but soft play is never in question. since Phil (blondite) cashed for the first time last week in Notts we've discussed a regular % swap when we play a tourney together but I'll play just as hard with him as anyone else at the table.

I think deals at Final tables are far more shadey when they involve 'friends' or 'same village' ganging up. I have said before that, other than in exceptional circumstances, I won't do deals. That makes me more uncomfortable than my opponents swapping shares.

Until recently no one had ever asked me to swap a %, I have now done it twice, once with Pete (the undertaker) Seagar, neither of us cashed, and once with Osman Mustangalu, 10%, which cost me 420

There was never any question of friendly play, colliusion or anything untoward, I dont think that a % would corrupt a normally honest player, why would he jeopardize his own chances and his integrity?

I regularly swap with friends and people i know from playing the uk circuit events and I find it gives you that extra bit of interest for the comp, especially if you bust out early.  I know Thewy is a big believer in swapping %'s and has done well for himself over the last 12 months (he may enlighten you with details - i'll leave it to him).  It is probably best to wait until you get deep in a tourney and swap but you may find that people are reluctant to swap then as they may already be full up (e.g. i never swap more than 25% of myself).  I only ever swap with people i know and trust as well.

all in all - many positives to swapping and no that many negatives.

In terms of slow play and colusion, I have never once found that swapping brings this into the heads of those i swap with.  I have 10% with my dad in all comps that we are both in and most of the time we seem to try even harder to beat the other for bragging rights - collusion is the cancer of poker and should be erradicated.

One of my best poker moments is being asked by both Thewy and Junior to swap 5% with them in a tourney....they want to give me 5%??...I was chuffed to bits....and another nice moment was swapping 5% with them and actually giving them some cash back.$18 each as I remember.
