I managed a horrible crash and burn late last night in Helsinki just as things were going great with about 25 players left. I had 140k in chips, starting stack 20k, going into the last hour, and was whittled down to 85k before this hand:

I picked up two red kings second to go, and raised to 4800, blinds of 800-1600. Two players in middle position called, as did the big blind. I´m thinking, I need to be very careful here, and can only feel safe if I flop a set. Flop comes

Ah, that looks safe though. I'm thinking, how do I best get the chips in if someone has a hand like 99 or TT. I only really to be scared of the possiblity of the big blind connecting with the flop.

I bet 24k, nearly the pot, and the next player, who has me covered, goes all in. It's passed round to me, and I pretty quickly called.

He shows (amazingly) 25 suited, and says "that's the way I play"

I'm the master of making bad laydowns, but could I have got away from this? The flop seemed so unlikely to have hit anyone, but his all in really is telling me that he can beat two kings. The way I've played the hand from under the gun, he must know that I hold a big pair, and therefore can only go all in if he has trips or better. He would be naive to do so with 99 or 1010. There was the possibilty of him playing 45 very agressviely, which was a big reason for calling. A fold would be easier if, say, if had come 722.

What do you reckon?

nothing you could do mate unless you put him on pocket fives, but my guess would be that he'd trap call that hand.

I would assess his play too much, you can't assume that everyone thinks about the game logically.

If he knew you had an overpair and had his thinking hat on then he would have moved all-in incase you had something more foldable like pocket eights to jacks.

I think you should have bet more on the flop Stu, get more info that way. Near pot seems too small. I mean if he comes over the top of a 1.5x pot bet then you know your KK is in trouble.

Might be one of the oldest bumps ever - 10 years & 2 months.

Stu will be much relieved he played it OK.

True. "Midlands Meltdown" did not quite have the same ring to it.

What a beautiful venue it was, too.

They used to hold "soko" Tournaments, & if I'm not mistaken, Luton Lally & his brother used to do pretty well in them.

I played there once and four to a flush beat a hi card in a show down.

That confused me for a week or so.

You're lucky you didn't have top pair then as when playing "forty-five" five card stud a 4-flush beats a pair.

I played it a lot when I was in Canada way back in the early 1970's where there was a regular game in an apartment block/college full of hippies called Rochdale.
