Title: MONTE CARLO - Day 2
Post by: tikay on March 17, 2005, 11:02:20 AM

OK, Day 2 in Monte Carlo is "moving day". 206 (or was it 211?) began the comp yesterday, 121 runners are left, and they will play today until just 27 players remain.

Chip counts are on the Day One thread.

A word of thanks at this moment to Brad "Otis" Willis, & Rolf Slotboom for the help they always give to blonde, but especially yesterday, when I was really quite unwell - thanks Guys.

So, who will be lording it over the others tonight? Well, this really reminds me of Copenhagen or The Vic, rather than Deauville or Vienna. I mean, no disrespect to those who finalled in the last 2 EPT's, but the Copenhagen & The Vic Finals had stunning quality players, there were not "push in & hope" merchants. And Day two here in Monte Carlo has some players who are an absolute delight to watch.

I don't think I know the Chip Leader Alexander Stevic, but i certainly know the second chip, one Barney Boatman. He has the game, but he seemed to catch a lot of good fortune yesterday - flopping top set against AA twice - and these things always even out over time.

David Benyamine in third place could easily go all the way, & the money wont faze him, he plays in the huge cash game at thr Aviation in Paris.

John Fanning in 7th is an interesting character. I assume this is the same guy who plays on PokerStars as "FANNING", & has a sorta blue batman motif as his pic. He has the ability to be seriously lairy, & I have received more verbal abuse than enough from him online, but maybe "live" he is all gentle jesus.

Andreas Harnemo is in 8th, perhaps making a fool of me for suggesting tbat "pushing all-in" is not the way to go. I thought Andreas - lovely guy, by the way - was pushing his luck in Vienna with all-ins, but he is in great shape here too.

I really don't mean to be critical of these guys - jeez, I'd swap positions with 'em - but I do prefer to see a little subtlety rather than the "who has the biggest balls" stuff.

And talking of subtlety, in 11th place is John Shipley, who is looking imperious. This guy has a game to die for, & some of the online qualifiers needed medical treatment for trauma after The Ship gave them his trademark staredowns yesterday. He looked magnifique!

And right behind him is another "proper" player, Anthony Lellouche. No shove-em in stuff with Anthony either, but it's in your face irritating little raises, hand after hand after hand. Lovely to watch, awful to  play against.

Mads Anderson - not to be confused with "YYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" Matthias Anderson - is in good shape, ditto Big Os Mustangulo. Deauville hero Brendon Schaeffer is in good shape again.

Then we have two more genuinely World-Class players, in Julian Gardner & Tony G. No introduction needed with them two!

America's Scott Bush is in OK shape, sitting with similar sized stacks as Bengt Sonnett, Simon Nowab, & betfair's Willie Tann.

With stacks in the mid teens we have an awesome group, which includes Gary Bush - what a torrid time he had yesterday, sat the wrong side of Gus Hansen - John Kabbaj, who somehow pushed his opponent off AA with 55....! , Joe Grech, Isabelle Mercier, sitting quietly twirling chips in both hands, Gus Hansen, & Martin De Knijff. And just behind are Krill, & Thewy. Jeez, some real players there, eh?

Betson is just fine with 13k, as is Achilleas with 11k+.

Kevin O'Connell, David Lloyd, Rob Hollinck, Angel Blanco and one Marcel Luske are all around 10k, & with blinds at 150-300, on a 90 minute clock, that's plenty.

Noah struggled all day, but 7k is enough for him to get out of trouble. Noah has a beautiful game, make no mistake.

Luca Pagano battled all day, & is still in with a chance with around 6k, as is Ben Grundy - plenty chips earlier, but struggled the rest of the day against a real quality table, & Steve Vladar, who lost a lot of chips when he made a huge (but correct) pass with KK.

So what a field is left in - I cant wait for this baby to run it's course, this truly could be Europes best ever Tourney.

OK, before ending this mini-preview, an "ahh" story. Young Nathaneal Kelley qualified on PokerStars FPP's, and just hoped that he'd get to sit with a "name" yesterday. Well, he sat all day with Gus Hansen & Gary Bush, & what's more, ended the day with more chips than both of them. He looks like he's about 14 years old, Baseball Cap on askance - I'd LOVE this well-mannered American lad to do well.

Play starts at 2pm Local - 1pm UK.

Enjoy!

Okay Guys,

I have loaded the updated betting onto the Intertops Website, if anybody wants to have a bet.

Thanks once again to Tikay for unparallelled coverage in the face of adversity. (This Central European flu bug has hit everyone here in Austria, I am not surprised you picked up the sniffs in Vienna).

Here's looking forward to an exciting Day Two. I will keep the betting open for as long as possible i.e. Until Tikay says "The Cards are in the air!"

Mike

Thank you Lassoo. We have new tables & seat allocations today, so I hope I can identify some of our Scandinavian friends today - I let the Scandies down yesterday, as I did not know many of their names, & my buddy Henning Gradstad is not here. But now I have seat numbers, I can identify the guys.

And I have found Eric Mistereggen - see next post!

Our son, Andrew Pichee, is 20 and from US... he's short-stacked and said he'll need good cards right away to stay in today. This is his first "live" poker so we're excited for him... any updates would be greatly appreciated.

Nathaneal had a prob, his JJ ran into KK, & he is down to about 9k. He seemed despondent, but i told him "no prob, PLENTY of time, he can still do the business if he does not panic.

More bad news. Thewy OUT

He bled down to 7k, & was on same table as Kevin O'Connell, who was dabbling in a lot of pots. Thewy fate was sealed when he hit top pair with J-T on a J high flop - Kevin had J-K.....

Dammit. We will try & get a word with him in a mo,when he's stopped steaming.

Great job Tikay your dedication will pay off.

I'm very surprised nobody as tipped Robert Mizrachi (Winner of main event in Amsterdam last year.) Brother of Michael Mizrachi recent winner of LA Poker Classic in
the Commerce CA $ 1.8m also last Dec won big event at the Bellagio 5 Diamond Event.

He hangs around with Noah Boeken, both Noah and Michael will admit Robert is the better player, aggression + brilliant maths brain + all round game + no silly mistakes.

I know he's a " Cheiftan Tank " but how's he doing ...... go on tell me he's out .... after all of the above.

Barney Update!

Went down to 15k today - he lost a large pot to lovely Isobel. Barney had 5-7 hearts, flopped the up & down str8 flush, & made the flush, but Isobel caught her fully.

But....Barney then outplayed Patrick Bruel, with 9-T v ??, on a board of rag=rag=9=Q=rag, & is back up to.....

50k!

They play down to 27 today.

DRAMA.

Keviin O'Connell just raised with a premium hand - 3-4 (suited...). Flop came 4-4-K, & some poor hapless & unsuspecting soul was sitting on what HE thought was a monster with K-J.

Result - we have a new chip leader with about 65k.....Kevin O'Connell

Ben Grundy just put his JJ down pre-flop in the face of some particularly aggressive R & RR-ing.

All the chips went in, & Ben was delighted he had passed his puny JJ when he saw KK & AA, wow, dodged TWO bullets there.

Oh yeah - the flop was 7-7-J.......

The story of the featured table so far has been Scott Bush. The PokerStars.com Frequent Player Point qualifier came to the table with just more than 22,000 in chips. While he rarely plays weakly, I expected him to shrink a bit in the face of Gus Hansen. Again, I'm learning to stop expecting things. Bush did the exact opposite, raising and re-raising Hansen at almost every opportunity. Only once in the first level did I see Bush lay down a hand to a Hansen bet, and that was to a check-raise on a raggedy board. On the last hand of the last level, Bush showed down queens on a jack-high board for another big win. Bush is now nearing 40,000 in chips with the blinds at 300/600/75.

Go Scottttay!

Nathaneal Kelley. When we last visited he had ran into a big hand -JJ v KK I think, & he was a bit dejected. I gave him a bit of a pep talk, & hey presto, next thing I hear, he was down to 6k......

But now he has.....da-dada da da da daaaaaaaaa

22k.

Great Stuff from the young man. He won't forget this tourney in a hurry. I told him he should be aiming to return amongst the Final 27 tomorrow - it IS realistic.

Marcus Gossler has 60k plus, looks like he has relieved Tony G of some.......

He is at same table as the lovely, pig-tailed Isobel, who also has 60k. Kevin O'Connell has dropped a few, & is down to 44k. That table is HOT.....

I cannot deny that I think Isobel is a fascinating character. Nothing to do with the pig-tails, I am just fascinated by her. She is edgy, has attitude, & gives one hell of a staredown. Oh yeah, & you should see her twirl chips......

Poor Barney just came a purler. He's still OK, but he could well have had a LOT more chips.

He's holding A-Q clubs, Matey Boy K-T clubs, yep, this looks juicy.......

Flop is 7-J-Q, the 7 & J both clubs. Juicier & juicier.

There's a blank on the turn, & THE ultimate horror card on the River - the A of Diamonds. Ayya!

John Kabbaj & Gus Hansen, the newbie (that's just for JBSC7769) clash big time. All the chips go in on a flop of QJx. John has KJ, Gus has AQ.

John is OUT, Gus doubles through, & has that killer look in his eyes now.

And young Nathaneal is having the day of his poker life. He is still on the TV table, & has just doubled up. He was ahead on the turn, & looked like he was going to faint whilst awaiting the river. Pacing up & down, the colour left his face, & the TV Director says "want some water Kid?". Biut it was his opponent - none other than Matey Boy - who needed water, as the boy hung on. He was ECSTATIC, but not Matthias Anderson style - just a young boy struggling to hide his emotions on the biggest day of his life. I guess the hard cases will laugh, but I found it quite touching, this young boy come all the way from America after qualifying on a FPP tourney. He looks about 12, Baseball cap on sideways, & he sure dont shave yet. Awesome stuff. Magical. Stuff the cynics, this is just lovely.

Anthony Kellouche: 70K+
Willie Tann: 70K
Robert Mizrachi: 50K+

Otis' chip counts are probably guesstimates. Either way, always go with Tikay, this is his site. I'm just trying to augment the information. Otis at http://www.eptblog.com/ is writing for the EPT and at the tournament as is Tikay. I'm in Washington State and just watching both websites.

Ok Tikay, Here is a story for you......Acouple of years ago I went with Marcel and Kirill to Barden to play the big 7-card stud comp. At about 3am one morning I was about to go back to my hotel after a couple of hours playing cash, when standing chatting to Aces Trumper (note the witnesses) ISABELLE came up and started to chat, She made me an offer I simply couldn't refuse, and 10 minutes later we are back in her hotel room with soft music and a nice bottle of wine.

Well Otis is sat next to me, & has been tremendously helpful. I will check those chip counts once the guys return from Dinner Break. I guess it's "evens of two" as to who has got them most right - or wrong!

For those of you at home, the method we used last week & this week is "joint" collection & sharing of information, then we each post our own "spin" on our own site. So, last night, Brad Otis Willis, Rolf Slotboom & myself worked as a team to gather the chip counts, then put them on our respective sites in our own style. Generally speaking, that's the way it works. As an example of this, I don't believe Matey Boy has been mentioned on the EPT Blog, which Brad compiles, but he's definitely here.......

Hi Tikay.  Found young Andrew Pichee at the dinner break... and he's still alive in the tournament.  He said he's at table 1 and wearing a suit (who knew... we can't get him to shave at home).  If you could update us on our "pride and joy" we'd be most appreciative.  Thanks again for all your hard work.

Well I found young Andrew Pichee - he's having a ball! He's got a smart suit & tie on, & has a BIG smile on his face. Not many chips - maybe 10k - but so what, he's done just great, whatever happens.

If only I could find Mr Eggenberger!

just phone reception ask to speak to the eggman and wait for the reception to take the phone to him

CHANGE OF PLAN

Thomas Kremser tells me that the original plan to play down to 24 or 27 tonight has been abandoned. It will be 24/27 OR two levels after Dinner. We are 35 minutes into the first level after dinner, so basically we have 2 and a half hours play to go, and there are 55 runners left.

Anybody care to take a guess at how many players will still be in when we finish for the night?

Ahh, another change of plan. Following Carlo's uncharacteristically clever riposte, the "how many left tonight" comp has now closed.....

I'll be pleased when next week comes, & Carlo starts getting out & about. He's a LOT easier to handle at the table.

"Put the clock on Mr Citrone please".

Some sad news; Mistereggen has just been eaten. Noone knows who by but people are suspecting the portly World Champions. The Camel has asked for it to be known he did not travel for this event.

Tikay thinks Mistereggen weighs 8lb, Otis says 6lb. Ironside wants to bet that its 7.5.

Krill is OUT.

The "clock" says there are 38 left, but it's hard to check, so many folks on the rail.

There is only 7 mins left, so once play has stopped, we will get ALL the Chip Counts.

Down to 39

---
EPT Update No. 26

Good news for the Dutch: Rob Hollink has moved into the chip lead! He is holding about 120,000 in chips now, after finding aces in the blig blind, with the small blind moving in on him. The Chief is playing very strong. Don't forget that at the start of this day he was down to just 10,000, and that his table draw was far from easy with Willie Tann in his back, someone who is very willing to get involved in pots with Rob, especially in position. Both Kirill Gerasimov and Tony G. are out, and we're down to 39 players. In about 10 minutes, we will be playing the last hand of the night, and I will try to have the final chip counts ready for you as soon as possible.

You beat me to it Ronaldinho.

I was gonna say that you shouldn't bother straining yourself Ben. It's only a small tournie, hardly worth the effort!!

Also wanted to say thanks for the coverage Tikay, doing a great job there. Looking forward to meeting some of you at the upcoming festivals in London and Luton.

Can I also mention that I've now got a blog up and running, which I hope you will agree contains a lot more poker content than this "pokerwhore" clown, link available to it on my profile.

Cheers
