Despite the timely start, the hordes of players are still drifting down the mile of corridor towards the Room - Chris Ferguson didn't seem to be able to make it past the massage stand due to the crowd of guys wanting their merchandise signed...

Thousands of players, literally, are taking their shot at this $1,500 NLHE event - I think the alternates list is a good size too.

Oh, and Welcome back to the Rio!

Speaking of Binion's, here it is from the outside.

This place is downtown, kinda away from all the glitz and glamor of what has become the main strip. Places like the Rio, Bellagio etc are equipped with all the frills, big shows, fancy costumes, themed restaurants, and so on. Meanwhile, Binions has remained a quite laid back little casino/cardroom where people go to relax.

I can only imagine how crammed it was at last year's wsop final!

Just popped in to the cardroom to be greeted by someone stuffing their hand down my top.

At first, I was genuinely excited that it was one of the hotties outside the ultimatebet tent, undertsandably finiding it hard to keep their mitts off the snoopstet, but after pivoted around, I was met with the slightly disappointing image of Sir Brian Wilson of SevenFoursville.

And it wasn't just his hand he was putting down my top, check these out... we have 500 to give away!

How cool do I look?

Actually, please don't answer that unless using a scale of 10 to 10.

And wasn't it Mark Seif who won, think he got two bracelets last year.

I know it looks like I just drifted off for an hour, but that's about how long it takes to wander between all the tables - I haven't yet seen the room packed to the rafters, all with people playing the same comp - just before the players went in I missed a great chance to snap 200 tables+dealers all sitting there in anticipation...

But here are those whom I spotted while doing the "Sorry, I'm not a waitress" routine:

Skalie
Sverre Sundbo
Ariston   (Who's lasted longer than yesterday's 12 minutes)
Torstein Iversen
Karl Mahrenholz
Richard Redmond
Marc Goodwin
Dave Ulliott
Noah Boeken
Annie Duke
John Hewston
Andy Bloch
Erik Seidel
Padraig Parkinson
Barry Greenstein
Andreas Hagen
Andy Black
Mike Matusow
Tony Bloom
Isabelle Mercier
El Blondie    (2,400 currently - wanted to tell me that on the table behind him a certain Mick Stanton doubled up with quad Fives vs KK)
Carlo Citrone
John Gale
John Duthie   (sat next to...)
Greg Raymer
Peter Evans

And that's just about half the room thoroughly searched, and the other preliminarily scanned!

They've already broken two tables (or those were never used) and occasionally some announcement goes off about Alternates, but since we tend not to get that in the UK, I'm not sure for how long you can get in, how many are on the list, or if there's any chip penalty for coming in late etc.

Introducing the blondeites...

(1) The surprisingly non-tantastic jbsc, fresh off a flight from his current place of abode, Greece. He's gonna need plenty more of those Red-Bull wings if he's to make this final table. Gonna be a long one...

(2) Cheeky monkey Ariston hiding his chip. "Tell them I'm into Level 2," he cries. So er, listen up, Ariston is into Level 2.

(3) A cleanly shave Mad Turk looking and acting less mad than usual, which is saying something!

(4) Finally, BOGOF - A two one offer with Womble looking down at his cards and a always tantastic Carlo Citrone checking out the tasty valets in the foreground.

I wish the ceiling were high enough for me to climb something and give you an overview of the room - it really is on a scale unlike anything in Europe.  This doesn't mean that bigger = better in every respect, just that the chip noise is subtly overwhelming and everywhere you look someone is raising, folding, or doing whatever you can do at a poker table (including eating, swearing (but not the F-bomb) wearing a towel draped over their heads (saw two of these)) but not smoking or talking on their mobiles.

There are empty tables right at the front of the space I've named "Quadrant two" - and while I was wandering I actually saw three players being eliminated.  It's a very different kettle of fish from the HORSE!!

And just as I was remarking on how odd it was to see Isabelle Mercier in a hat (she has such nice hair) - I am reliably informed by Brad that she is OUT, but by no means one of the earliest casualties...

Julian Thew is OUT - apparently 20 mins or so into the comp... Ariston tells me that's better than he fared yesterday.

Meanwhile Ariston himself has exited - this time through no fault of his own - he raised to 225 with Kc Kd, found one caller and then the big blind made it 600 to go.  Ariston pushed all in for just under 2,500, and the big blind called like a shot, with Qh Qd.  The way they deal over here (all three flop cards out at once, turn and spread) meant that when he saw the Queen on the top of the flop, he was already standing up, and wondering whether he ought to swear seeing as the 10 minute penalty would be irrelevant...

Womble is OUT - just caught him joining Ariston, Dubai and DPommo railing Roland at the TV final...

Apparently KJ wasn't in such good shape against AK, and after the K Q Q flop, the J turn did nothing to help him.  Doesn't look too gutted, to be honest - in Vegas there's always another game round the corner.  Even if it's an STT back at their place against us and the Poker Mansioners...

Marc Goodwin is OUT.

Tens vs Jacks

No help

Incidentally, Marc managed to double up after just 2 hands.

Sat in the blind with 2-3, he called a 100 raise on a flop of 4-5-K

Turn brings a T, Mateyboy bets 200, Marc calls.

River = A

Marc announces all-in and Mateyboy calls, showing K-K (!!!)

There were 2126 runners for this, apparently... at least a quarter of the Room is now taken up with cash games, satellites etc. so we're playing Find the Moved Player - it's not surprising that they're just going for it - Isabelle apparently described this tourney as a "zoo."

Blinds are now 100/200 - so those who've failed to get off the starting blocks will be feeling their 1,500 is on the wrong side of chipped.

Not silly - pretty much unheard of in the UK - Alternates are the waiting list if a tourney is already max capacity, getting in when someone busts out.  That time is over, however, and the field is consuming itself at a great pace.

so you can buy in even after the game has started??

after a bust out or 2..?

And here's our all-singing all-dancing Scandie friend Sverre - nicely comfortable in chips, and celebrating his cash in the Shootout yesterday.  Another narrow TV miss for the Norwegian.

Yep - you get a level (maybe two) to get in as early players drop...

Film actor James Woods of 'Once Upon A Time In America' and 'Ghosts of Mississippi' fame was throwing a right wobbly earlier on.

He returned from the break to find his chips had been moved to another table. Woods had no idea where to look and spent quite a while trying to find his new seat. Meanwhile, the blinds had passed and Woods had lost a few chips from his already inferior stack - this is what really pissed him off.

Anyhow, he went off on one to the supervisors, f-ing and blinding in the process. Another wsop emplyee behind me simply said "Tough s**t, he was late".  :D Clearly a man of few words.

Padraig Parkinson whom I saw winning his last hand before the break, quiet in comparison to a large percentage of the field...

Clonie Gowan -- 3,600
Chris Moneymaker -- 700
badpab -- 2,000
Sverre Sundbo -- 8,500
Mike Matusow -- 7,150

badpab did have 5k at one point but lost more than half of it being "too agressive"

Just caught Matusow betting 700 into a 5-Q-9 (two clubs) flop - opponents folded.

Please forgive Snoopy, I don't think he's had breakfast...

Just before the BREAK (which is now) I saw Irish Denis heading for the rope prematurely, and yes, he was out.  He raised preflop to 600, was re-raised his last chips (2.5k or so) and called with Aspades Qs.  "I was up against Fives."
"That's it?"
"That's it."

So there's your story.

Other couple of counts from that area - -

John Gale    5,200
Juha Helppi  4,800

Now that the field has shrunk to the point where they can take communal breaks, my carefully drawn up blondeite-map is totally useless as they're effectively playing musical chairs.

Correction on the Moneymaker exit report.

He's still in, but is clinging.

He just bet 400 into 3d Jc Jh flop, Mateyboy called then bet the Kh Turn.

Moneymaker is down to the felt with just 600.

This dude was playing in my little single table tourney last night, and rivered a gutshot on me before knocking out half the table and doubling up the rest.  Either that was just a peanuts game to him, or his table in this event is in for a wild ride.  Oh, and when I arrived at his table, he said, "No, no pictures of me!" before posing like that.

Meanwhile, Mike Matusow has joined Padraig Parkinson's table. Some banter on the cards there, surely.

And the tournament is down one Sverre Sundbo -
With the blinds at 100/200 ante 25, he limped in early position.  A rather annoyed-looking button, when it folded to him, popped it to 1,500.  The blinds got out of the way and Sverre immediately moved in for 3,375 more.  A strong move, if Mr. Button hadn't been sitting on Kc Kh - Sverre's 2h 2s made a flush, but it was in hearts, so was beaten by the Button.

410 in the $1,500 No Limit - I think pretty precisely 410 as a table was reassigning its players this very minute - this means that over three quarters of the field is On The Rail already.

Now here's a character.

This is Paul McKinney, infmaous for his love of "cigars and women".

Back in World War II, Paul won enough money whilst based on board a ship to buy his folks a brand new house in Kentucky. When his superiors approached him, they asked him whether he was cheating or not. Paul's response? "I don't need to cheat."

Great guy, but, unfortunately, he's just lost a big pot to Mateyboy seated to his right.

Paul = 8c 8h

MB = Ahrt 4h

Board = 7c 3h 5c 3c Aspades

I'm sure Paul can come back though, let's not forget his top notch performance in last year's Senior's Event, a scoop which netted him over 200 smackeroonies!

Hi thanks for the support,

There were 400 players left at the dinner break, 200 pay, i have 5k with the blinds going to 200-400 and 50 ante after the break. First hand after the break its folded to me in the cut off, and i make it 1k to go with KQ and the big blind defends. Flop is K 8 2, and the big blind leads out, i move in and says he is committed to call and says, ure K is good. he has A8 and we are in for a close to 12k pot, turn Q ( woot woot), river A, (ffs) 50p in the tin. Enjoyed my first wsop a lot and am looking forward to playing some more. I think i had a good shot to cash if i win that hand, but nevermind. I can confirm that snoopy's barnet is as dodgy as it looks in the photo's, great updates u 2, how long u staying in vegas for?

How about this for a hand?

A-A v A-K v Q-Q

Board = 2-Q-6-J-7

Ouch. A Ten on the River would have been fun though.

And this was the table in question.

The players involved were the chap in the red (left: Q-Q), the Asian guy on the right (A-A) and the fellow in white and black at the top (A-K).

Mateyboy cubed, but with pictures!

Hey Jen or Snoop, if you guys aren't too busy is there any chance you could check up on ken powell (aka kpnuts) in the $500 2nd chance tourney that started at 5?

I busted out of the 1500 earlier attempting a resteal against a persistent button raiser but he had AK, that's how it goes I suppose.

If you're way too busy don't bother, I'll get off my arse and head down myself soon enough.

The odd thing about America is that whenever you venture into a public area, other people actually try to socialise with you. (Yes, I know, it's a lot for us Brits to take in.)

Well, I was just in the wsop shop bying some sweetie goodness when a 70 year old man taps me on the shoulder and, in a deep Barry White-esque voice, says, "How are you, my firend?"

Somewhat surprised by a stranger asking such a question so out of the blue, I replied, "Er, great thankyou. Yourself?"

Well, he didn't answer my question, but did go on to say, "Do you realise that I was in the first World Series?"

"Oh really, I replied," feigning interest, "1970, wasn't it?"

Seemingly ignoring he continued, "And did you know that was back in 1970, 36 years ago?"

"Yea --"

"And do you know what we have now in 2006?"

"What's that?" I replied.

"This is a circus!"

And with that he exited the shop.

Crikey.

A walk out into the Tournament Hall and within a minute, I saw Bhups going all-in!  The pot preflop already had around 4,000 in it, and Mr. Kholi had moved in for about that again... eventually Matey calls his Ac Kh with Kd Qd.  He must have been relatively happy about that - and with the board coming all low he's regained the ground he apparently lost in the last level...

Hiya, Snoop ... I wasn't sure if that was you in the media room, because you look nothing like the cartoon beagle ... But, when I looked over your shoulder, the forum you were typing on looked VERY familiar. That's when it clicked. At some point, I hope to find the time to introduce myself to Jen and Tikay. It kills me to not be down on the floor with all of my friends in the media.

Unfortunately, I'm locked away in a hotel room here at the Rio, providing updates for Pokerwire.com. It's a very weird situation, based on all of the weird "exclusive" deals that Harrah's signed this year.

Anyway, at least I get to read your updates, which give a much better "feeling" of the action than the official stuff at CP.com.

Yes, I REALLY need to change my screen name. I haven't worked for Card Player since January.

(Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your hello here in the forums, but I'm busy updating 98% of the time.)

Seriously having been there last year, I know how bloody difficult it is to get among the tables for chip counts without the officious suits hassling you every time you try and get over a rope.... Keep up the good work and remember to always play harder than you work ;)

Now i have to Iron a school shirt and trousers, get my son out of bed and into the shower, make him breakfast , give him money and shove him out of the door for school ... then i can get to bed  :)    look forward to catching up later ...see ya.

Just 209 remaining.

Londoner Bhupinder Kohli still flying the flag for Britain with 19k.

Caught up with him outside the food tent in the last break, and he says he got off to his great start (10k when the average was2k) thanks to a lot of serial callers of a guy with Kings who'd raised to 150 (the blinds being 25/50).  This made him fancy his Ad 3d, and when the flop came all diamonds, his accelerated start began.  Then, more recently, it has been his opponents' paying no attention to his rock-like behaviour and calling away when he moved in with his AK (KQ) and KK (10 10) - it does look like it's taken a phenomenal amount of time for them to register that he's not played a hand for 2 hours...

snoppy and Jen, its been a superb night of updates ... not enough norkage, but you know that.

Nighty night Kev - thanks for the encouragement - so glad that some of you UK based insomniacs keep us company.

Seated opposite one another are Huck Seed and Padraig Parkinson. Whilst the former World Champion is on a comfortable 18k, the Irishman has dropped to 8k.

I think we should pick a couple more players to follow - here we have a Mr. Peperone, pointed out to me by his wife on the rail, who was busy taking (probably much better) pictures of him, and seemed pretty excited by the whole prospect.  :hello: to the Peperones if you come across blonde!  Also adopted for Loudness of Shirt.

I heard clapping, which means one of two things - someone has gone out of the Feature Table, or the $1,500-ers have made the money...

In any case, play is due to stop after the end of the next level (10), and continue 2pm Vegas Time tomorrow (I know Vegas Time isn't a real Time Zone, by the way).  So that's 10pm for you night owls back in the UK, and pretty much any other time, dependent on geography.

Whilst Mateyboy blew down Paul Woolfe's stack creating an empty seat, neighbour Rob Hollink is sitting pretty with 34,800, which is rather good going considering the average is still only 15k. As one of few Europeans, I'm flly backing Mr Hollink in this comp.

53 Card Deck Alert:

One table had their deck fully fanned out face up when I walked by, and a bemused set of players and dealer were looking at the two Ts which had been being used for half an hour!  "New set-up!"  One player remarked (jokingly, thank goodness) "I want my money back," while the others all laughed at him.  Play continues, with standard (52 card) deck.

I once saw two people turn over a Queen high flush at the Gala.

And does anyone ever remember that time in Blackpool when they found out they'd been playing with several extra cards?

Sry to torture you with my holiday snaps, especially considering some of you have just risen (a Snoopy in the morning isn't what you want to see), but here's me in front of a big golden nugget. Very exciting, I'm sure you'll agree. Just look at how happy I am!  :D  ;karabiner;

They're in the Money!  In case that crucial bit of information somehow didn't filter down to you...

But when we question Bhupinder, it's all about the top finish...he's on average chips with 20k, but knows that the first level they'll play tomorrow will be 600/1,200 with a 200 ante, and having just been playing 400/800 ante 100 that's the biggest jump so far.  So I may go back and hover over his table and see if he capitalises on his tight image.

Michael Mizrachi was on 18,600 until he completely ruined my chip counting by playing a hand (how selfish, huh?).

On a flop of Th 3c Qc

Mateyboy called all-in with Jh 9h, but failed to outdraw 'The Grinder's' Qs 7d

Turn = Ts, River = 9d

A dealer came up to me and said, "See how nervous he was then, he cowered away from the table when the turn and river were being dealt."

... which was true, it reminded me of when I was a kid and could see the ball I kicked sailing towards the lounge window. eek.

To be honest, I think Mizrachi's got too much money to be nervous.

Anyhow, the Queen stood up and 'The Grinder' added several more thousand to that 18k.

Also still in are Irish contingent Donnacha O'Dea (with a rather dangerous 7k) as well as Padraig Parkinson.  They're supported by these sorts of railbirds:

Three Europeans still left in, Rob Hollink, Padraig Parkinson and Bhupinder Kohli.

As you can probably tell from the snaps, we're down to 15 tables and below, thereby resulting in moi and my update colleague being forced onto the rail.

Play has just come to end, which means it's time to stack em, count em and bag em.

Time for us to wave bye bye.

Not a great showing from the Brits, or the Europeans as a whole for that matter, but we'll be keeping a keen on Bhupinder Kohli and crossing fingers that he'll make that final. Who wants to see another all American final, huh? Well, except for 300 million Americans of course...

We'll try and get those chip counts up for you before the start of tomorrow's play, which will be at 2pm (Vegas time) - an early rise for you chaps back in England, but it'd be great to have you come along for the ride.

nighty night, folks.  ;sleep;

Thanks for posting my picture (and for following my progress for the very short time it lasted thereafter).

I busted out about 30 minutes before play stopped on day 1, in 145th place.

My wife Joanne was so excited (as was I) because this was my first live tournament (I looked like I did in the picture because was cautious not to start smiling - I would have never stopped and the childish grin would have given me away.

Thanks for giving me a small place on your forum!
