Title: WSOP Main Event 2006 - Day 1a - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on July 28, 2006, 07:37:29 PM
Alrighty, welcome back to the complete insanity of the Rio - we've not even found a perch but wanted to get started on the searching of the blondeites -

A sea of poker players seethes once again under the rows of hanging lights in the Poker Warehouse that is the Convention Centre, and hopefully when they get started we'll track down some faces in it...

Good luck to all playing, and get ready for the long haul...

Players to Use All-In Button
Players each have an all-in button to use for their all-ins rather than having to push all $10,000 of their chips into the middle.  This is the first time the World Series of Poker has implemented such a device to improve efficiency.

what if they press it by accident

Not only a list of runners but an exact chip count would help us all home here in ole' blighty get more involved...

Mate E Boy and his 1500 cousins are all playing today.

I don't think, Mr. HM, that you really want a list of 2,000 names, out of which you will recognise fewer than 5%.  Oh, and we don't have them ;)

By the time they opened the doors they were only letting players in so I left BigArmo to it and i'm off to find an afternoon tourney to play in somewhere as my first day isnt til sunday

 ;goodluck; to BigArmo, RobS and any other blondeites taking part today :)up

A few names spotted:

Dan Harrington
Scotty Nguyen
Andy Black
Barry Greenstein
Amir Vahedi
Juha Helppi
Andrew Bloch
Bruce Atkinson
Joe Bartholdi
Hoyt Corkins
William Chen
Tony G
Tony Chessa
David Pham
Kristie Gazes
Mimi Tran
Clonie Gowan

Not as easy as I hoped finding the 'name' players. So many unknowns.

It's like picking the peanuts out of a sea of poo.

OK, Sweeny - I'll have a haddock and chips, Dr. Pepper

Soxy - Not sure but if he's here we'll find him eventually

Robert HM - Going to slowly gather the database - early pics coming

matt - yes, there's a queue all the way down the hall just for the privilege of standing as a spectator.  Perhaps luckily for us they're being held back at the door for now by security guys and we're sneaking in to get some photos.

Here's a good picture (if I do say so myself) - a little chat between Roland 'Full Tilt' De Wolfe, and the chap who came second to him in the WPT Paris last year - Juha Helppi.  Thought they might be on the same table for a minute, and felt for the qualifiers sanwiched between them, but in fact it looks like there's only Gus Hansen as a tablemate of Juha's...

And we have our first English casualty...

Accompanied to the room by Paul Parker, is the rather devestated face of Tony Cartwright.

Tony raised preflop with sevens, MB called.

Flop = 7-rag-rag

MB bet, Tony called.

Turn = another rag

MB bet, Tony reraised, MB called.

River = 9

MB moves all-in, Tony calls.

MB wins with pocket nines.

Not bad going considering he ran a flopped set of Fives into a flopped set of Aces on hand 5. Somehow though, he only managed to dorp 2k. Boy, that hand must have been played slow.

Whatever you do, make sure you bring plenty of clothes to Vegas, otherwise you're likely to be washing your drawers in the sink every day, just like I've been.

He's played and won about 5 hands, and lost one with pocket tens. Preflop action, Des knew he was in trouble when MB smoothcalled his flop bet on a board of A-J-rag.

And Des Wilson is OUT -

I just happened to be passing Table 149(!) when I saw a pot with about 2,500 in it and a flop being dealt.  That was:  Kc Kd 8h.
Matey checked to Des (it was heads up) who bet 2,000, finding a pretty quick check-raise to 4,000 coming back at him.  He called.
Turn:  Jd   Now Matey fired out 3,000, leaving himself about that much behind.  Again, call from Des.
River:  7h   The rest of Matey's chips are bet out, and it appears Mr. Wilson was covered, for when he called and was shown Ks Js to his Ahrt Aspades, he was walking to the corridor.

"I'm very disappointed," the pokerographer remarked while heading past the popcorn stand with me in tow like the update-vulture I am.

With the blinds at 50/100, you probably wouldn't expect the numbers to be falling so rapidly, but they are - at least ten tables have been renumbered as alternates fill in the spaces left by their unfortunate early counterparts.

Thomas Wahlroos is down to under 2k after a non-believer moment:

I saw the river come on a board of Qc Qd 7c Tc Ahrt.  Matey bet out (it looked like 1,500 or so) and got a quick raise to 4,500 from Wahlroos on that rather intimidating board.  But it was a fairly quick call with the Ac Jc, and Thomas' Qs Kd was shown to be no good, and not a full house after all, as he may have been conveying...

The best one is probably Gutshot's World Record Heads Up (Take II) where Ron 'Mad Yank' Fanelli is attempting to play all comers heads up for three days straight.  Might go challenge him in a minute.  Or do you think I should wait til tomorrow?  ;goodvevil;

Now everybody loves a good rant/argument, and this one came from Dutch young gun and International 'cool dude' (cough) Noah Boeken.

Standing on the rail as a hand was being dealt out, Noah turned off his phone and ran back to his seat just before receiving his second hand.

The dealer announced that his hand was dead and asked him to pass the cards in.

There was a lot of back of forth rubbish, but I seemed to be the only one who realised that the crossed wires were a result of two different rules.

(1) Your hand is dead if you are on the phone when the cards are being dealt.
(2) Your hand is dead if you don't return to your seat after your second card has been dealt.

Noah was saying things like, "But I was here before my second card was dealt" and "I turned the phone off before I returned to my seat"

Basically, bad communiction between dealer and supervisor.

Silly thing is that I reckon he probably had rags.

Talking of the House of Cards, here's one inhabitant, Tony 'Ribena Berry' Chessa.

Caught a few odd words...

"I'm playing it the same as I would any tournament"
"It's a good table, pretty soft. Only a couple of decent players"
"I'm on 17 thousand"
"Barring a distaster, I should make Day 2"

He was also ranting about a hand where MB had 3-3 on a T-3-3 flop, didn't quite catch what Tony held.

Mr Chessa must be getting pretty famous, one crew member even asked me to hold 'Tony's' bloomin' beer!!!

I held it alright, I drank it too!

Eat my shorts!

I thought Harrington had been eliminated or something, but it's just some random old guy. I think they're clapping him for being old. Boy, tikay would get a standing ovation from every cardroom in America.

You may recognise this guy (well, if you could hear his voice you would) - Ade Bayo, oftentimes to be found chatting it up at the tables at Gutshot, who qualified for the Main Event and has drawn a seat at a table which is notably quieter than he.  And that's Americans, mind you.  He looked very happy, and was waving around a silver business-card case which I am reliably informed by Barry Martin contains cards he hands out when he knocks people out:  "Congratulations, you've been Ade'd!"  I will be astounded if he can keep that up for ten straight days...

But I would be most grateful if you could find out how Garry Bush and Tony Bloom are doing before I go to bed in about 10 minutes..

I once kept moving all in on his BB every round for a laugh and he finally called giving me one of those cards in advance.  I ended up outdrawing him but kept the card anyway cos I thought it was pretty funny.  Bet he pisses off a few Yanks....

First his set of jacks was out-turned by an open ended straight draw.

Then his pocket Kings were outflopped by A-Q, Ace first card.

a story from an alternative site if I may....only because it is so mad!!
We had a flop of the Tc 7c 5s. A bet of 300 is made by Tim Rod and he received a raise from an opponent. So, Rod merely called. The turn came the 3c. Rod tried another bet, this time for 1500. His opponent showed strength again and raised to 4K. Rod simply smooth called the raise. The 3s landed on the river. All in said Tim Rod and he got an instantaneous call from the opponent. Rod quickly revealed his Kc Qc for the second nut flush. His opponent, (and this is the way it is….in this crazy world of poker) the opponent said “Do I have a straight flush????????...Oh. no…I don’t…as he turned over the 8d 6s for a broken everything. Tim happily scoops a nice one.

Is this really possible in a 10k buyin tourney??

Rob Sherwood is up to 31k, a decent proportion of which came from a 5-3 button raise.

MB though about raising, but just called, so ROb reckoned he had something like pocket tens.

Flop came 9-7-3 and both players checked.

Turn = 3

River = rag

Rob bet both streets and MB called both times.

MB mucked on the river.

Gala Ash isn't too happy about the way some players cover themselves up. He reckons you ought to see at least 50% of somebody's face, otherwise they might as well all play in masks.

The rest of the Gala boys are also here including Justin and (I've never asked his name but have played him loads of times) Wayney (is that right?)... Fran?

The latter of the two may well be the more reliable.

I kid you not, I'm sure I saw a tumbleweed blow by.

Actually, one guy did put his hand up meekly and creep towards the door, but these girls looked pretty shocked by the stunned silence with all us nerds turning back to our lappies to continue with our work. They clearly don't get to many knockbacks.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD, LADIES!!!

ask for an interview off of this guy too......
Two unknown players were involved in a hand. The flop held J-J-A.  One player pushed all in for about $16k, with the other playing only having about $2100 .  After he thinks about it for a long time, David Levi, sitting to his immediate left, pulls out a giant wad of cash (about $8,000) and says: "If you call that bet and you're right, this money is yours."

The guy still folded.

Levi says then to the all-in bettor: "If you show a bluff, that money is yours."

Legends are made of this stuff!!!!!

Ok so far had some fun on the first table with renowned Stars player Jason Strasser made it up 18k but ive been moved to a new table with no recognisable names or faces currently sit on 16k. Won a big pot early with a top pair and nut flush draw that got there lost a chunk twice with queens and won a small pot with the aces.
Just 1 bit of sick play so far where i raised UTG with 2 red 8s and bet the AQ4 all club flop and received a call i now managed to get him to pass AK no club when it came a red 7 on the turn and i bet 2500 which was just under the pot.

Enjoying your blog Snoops.  You checked out the Tilted Kilt or the Voodoo Lounge yet?

Voodoo Lounge has been on the cards for a while now, but we haven't got round to it. I'm sure we'll squeeze it in somewhere, it's only fair that some of the hotties in Vegas get the chance to meet me.

Jeremy 'Jezza' Bates

Although Crypto informed him that his Day 1 was on Sunday, Jezza arrived today to find out that he was actually scheduled in for today!! So, with a dwindled stack of 8.5k, Jezza has raced in and is now having his Day 1 today! Incredible cock up.

Dan Harrington is OUT.

The veteran and former Main Event winner who made two consecutive finals in 2003 and 2004 (a feat which is often greeted as one of poker's greatest complishments) was finally eliminated by another veteran of the game.

Mike Sexton's Pocket Queens were more than enough to fend off Harrington's flush draw, which never arrived.

Harrington received a much deserved round of applause.

Hello again - I have had a small nap under the table in the press room instead of a dinner break, which has perked me up no end.  As has the sight of MadYank about 7 hours in to his 72-hour heads up Guinness World Record Attempt.  Must really try not to yawn around him...

Anyway, there has been some consternation among players of days 3 and 4 especially that there seems to be a noticeable lack of famous pro-types playing today...I wonder whether it will all get tougher later in the week.  Nah, probably just as tough with any field of four figures.

hey snoops i have details of your next live update infact i think you might try and get a flight home soon

It started as an April Fool's joke but an Irish bookmaker's proposal to hold the world's biggest strip poker contest will become reality next month.

Paddy Power floated the idea as a joke but it generated so much interest -- and hundreds of requests to take part -- that the Dublin-based company decided to organise a contest.

So next month, 200 poker buffs will risk baring all in an attempt to become the first World Strip Poker Champion -- and earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The winner will also receive a "Golden Fig Leaf" trophy plus 10,000 pounds in cash.

"This will be the most fun you can have with your clothes on -- or off!" Paddy Power said in a statement for the tournament, which will be held in London on August 19.

Might I interject my Climber of the Day at this point?

Drumroll please....it's Thomas Wahlroos.

Down to 1,500 after two levels, I highly expected him to have made a slight recovery or busted (no detriment to him as a player - in several European events he's shown himself to be top calibre) but finding him with 21,000 now it appears that his evening has gone much better than his afternoon.  Having worked his way back to his starting stack, he got in a battle of the blinds, eventually making a big all-in with Qd Td.  As for his opponent: "He called my all-in with pocket Sevens, so he deserved it" when he hit the flop and made his stack comfortable.

It's not easy catching a good hand, but sometimes you hear a slight ruffle, a few raised voices perhaps, or the pushing aside of chairs.

One of these occasions just happened on one of the very back tables.

It's a Mateyboy cubed hand, but I have a photo!

After some preflop action, the three Mateyboys see a flop of Ts Js Kc

Seat 5 and 7 check, Seat 10 bets 500

Seat 5 calls, Seat 7 raises to 3,000

Seat 10 makes it 10,600 leaving Seat 5 to move all-in for a total of 9,600.

Are you still with me?

Seat 7 dwells for ages, giving it a lot of talk... predominatly due to the cameras being present.

Anyhow, he eventually folds, proudly slamming down Ks Jc.

Seat 5 shows Ahrt Qs

Seat 10 has Tc Th

Turn = 5h

River = 8s

The all-in man survives.

"Best hand I've ever played!" comments Seat 7 adamantly

I am truly honoured to have just met Sir Brian McFadden (knighted for his services to Westlifeness)

I was ordering a couple of beers when the guy behind the bar said, "Do you want lime with it?"

I thought he said "wine" and looked puzzled.

"Wine", I replied confused.

Then mi ol' mucka Brian commented, "This guy doesn't want wine, he's Australian"

Australian!!! I can understand the Americans mistaking me for an Aussie, but not an Irishman

Any more tomfoolery like that and that McFadden will finally know what flying like wings is like.

Guns at the ready.

Great reporting as usual.
Unlucky to Des Wilson (swimming with the Devilfish), a true gentleman in all aspects of the game.When not lording it with the big boys can be found playing with us mere mortals at cornwallpoker in Falmouth/Penryn/Hayle.

But what was he doing playing  AA in this kind of tournament!!!! ;)

Good luck also to all the Ladbrokes Players.

Righteo, just two hours to go and then beddie byes.

Jen and I made the mistake of staying up til 10am the night before last, rrresulting in us waking at 8-10pm the nxt day, and not being able to get to sleep last night.

We played cash til 6 at the Orleans when I decided to hit the sack. Jen only got 1 hour in the end, I think, which explains why she was kipping under the Media table earlier today.

With just 950 players remaining, they're guaranteed pretty much to hit their target of 900 or fewer by the end of this level, but with multiple start days they've got to play through til the bitter end.  12pm tomorrow and it all starts all over again.

One player with the experience and stamina for these kinds of tourneys must be Andy Black (confused, I overheard in the hallway, with Andy Bloch once again by the Americans who appear fans of both).  Catch his staredown, when not even in a hand...

Bit of a roar at Ash's table, and I managed to get a ringside view.

Three people went all-in, but one fellow was lambasting another for influencing another man's decision. "You have pot odds, you have to call" I believe was the phrase spoken, and, from what I understand, it wasn't the first time he'd made such comments.

Anyhow, the guy did call (Seat 2), and he had Jc Jd

MB in Seat 4 (who was the unhappy chappy) had Kh Ks, whilst MB#3 in Seat 9 held Qs Qh

Board = 5s 3c 9s Js Tc

Big roar from the crowd and many onlooking players.

Oh I do love a good contoversy...  ;goodvevil;

Barring a disaster, young bracelet winner Mark Vos will be in second with the likes David Pham, Hoyt Corkins, Martin Wendt, Rob Sherwood, Joe Tehan, Julian Gardner and Layne Flack not too far behind.

I really do think that when Jen & slopps arrive at bB3, we should make them both Lords, or Sirs, or something, these guys are just the best.

But I should also warn everyone that blonde will NOT be covering the entire Main Event. Reporting restrictions, & other stuff, including my failure to get across there & help spread the load, mean we will probably give best after the 4 opening days. We can only ask so much of Jen & snoppy. There are plenty of blondes in Vegas with Lappies & texts coming & going across the Atlantic, & so there will still be plenty of blonde news to keep us updated.

Sorry about that, but when we heard that we would be denied access for the later stages, we kinda decided it made no sense to try.

Listen. I was playing some Hi-Lo Cash last night on blonde, and a  vey nice Gentleman, "skin-up" I think his name was, came in the chat Box & said "is that THE tikay, off the telly?". I'm loving it, "thank you Sir, glad you enjoy it" & all that stuff. Unbenown to me, Colchester Kev was lurking, & exposed me big time. Damn that man.

The guy eventually said "OK tikay, I'm off to bed, sleep well". I typed in "you too, sleep well, xxxx". Well, Kev had a field day. "Love you". "Love you too".  He needs to be careful, that Kev, I have my image to protect.

we will be down at the Rio today to do some railing, and i need to soke up some atmosphere before i play!
