Morning!  Another day, another 2,138 players.  Probably.  (That's how many played Day 1a)

But today is heavier on the blondeites, with Marc Goodwin and Dave from the Poker House giving it a go... So after my extra half hour of getting ready time (OK, lying in bed staring at the alarm on my phone) thanks to Snoops I am refreshed and ready to go gather evidence from the early stages of play.

Already heard a story, courtesy of blondeite SuffolkPunch:  He saw Phil Ivey getting into a 4xraise preflop war in the first level (go on, guess Ivey's hand) - and on a Queen-high flop, the Mateyboy still didn't feel like letting his pocket Tens go... the standard of play here is variable, to say the least.

I've been told that Mark Wiliams is a pretty decent player.

Hi Dave, Steve Davis plays quite a lot on Laddies and is pretty solid.

Mark Williams plays a lot of events on the UK circuit, Hendry was there last year too.

But none of them seemed very keen to take us on at 9-ball in the Tilted Kilt  ::)

That guy KP Nuts was trying to sell in himself on the Betfair forum under the heading WSOP Special Offer.  Seemed to get some really vitriolic and pisstake response's when a simple yes or no would suffice.  For that reason hope he goes deep....

I played with Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and Viv (can't remember his last name for the life of me) last year at a Betfred $5k stt in Manchester, it could have been a really good night but the whole thing was a sham, they were blatantly giving signals to each other and treated the whole game as a joke.... Sigh. Not surprising that they all came 1st 2nd and 3rd.....

"Viv" = Viv Williams, or Williamson, I can't remember which. Has a Pony-Tail. Built like a gable end. Very aggressive player, had some decent results.

OK - first story courtesy of Hugh Kirton, who can only be described as a genial but sick poker junky.  I congratulated him on his unusual headwear, and dress in general.  "Yes," he replied, "I was going for the look of a gay, weak-tight player."  He's clearly thought it all through.

"And then I went all-in first hand."

Apparently he'd arrived late, having played cash all night (eminently believable) and got to his seat as the first card was being dealt.  So, his Td Jd wasn't dead, and he called an under the gun 150, along with a mid-positioner.  Flop:  Qc 9d 4d.  Not bad.
UTG then makes it 300, called in the middle, and Hugh makes it 850.  Call from Matey 1, but Mid-Matey makes it 3,000.  So Mr. Kirton goes all-in, and is called by Mid-Matey with his set of Fours.
Kc on the river, and it's 20k off the bat.  God help his table.

There is a big pool event on right now in Las Vegas.  O'sullivan and Hann were both in it.  Jimmy White got knocked out by Hann, so did O'sullivan.

Just to let you guys know, I don't have a player list at hand, and there is a room of 2000 faces, so finding one guy who I've never met or even seen is kinda tricky

I do know who Punkfloyd is though, so, if I spot him on my travels, I shall keep an eye on him.

Hudson, bro of Kate hudson, and son of Goldie Hawn!

what a hand that was

Sammy trebled up 15 mins after that hand too when he called a massive rasie of 1000 (blinds 50/100) with 33 and hit a 3 on flop to beat a guys pocket AA!!!

I saw a lot of inside-out shirts yesterday, but until there's danger of their .coms getting on TV, there are just too many players to police.  If you look at the PartyPoker logo on the tables, it's .net, and so are the web addresses on all the big banners and booths and stuff around the Arena.  If you make it on the Feature table etc. then it's black tape over your .com...

not as bad as last year when it was first hand when he flopped a full house vrs sammy farha's bigger boat

Hudson, bro of Kate hudson, and son of Goldie Hawn!

what a hand that was

Sammy trebled up 15 mins after that hand too when he called a massive rasie of 1000 (blinds 50/100) with 33 and hit a 3 on flop to beat a guys pocket AA!!!

i am sure was 25/50 first level if it was 15 minutes it sure was as the levels are 2 hours

I believe Davis was sponsored by laddies.  Who has put Hendry in, and are there any other snooker players taking part?

BetFred put Hendry in, bit of a joke IMHO. Couldn't they put a decent jobbing pro in?

might have been 25/50 i cant say for sure, but i know it was very early on and blinds were tiny, as they were commenting on the size of the raise and the call from sammy of the raise.

Anyway, stop being so bloody pick tonight you!

This is a request but only if you bump into him and can be arsed.  Please tell good luck from me to Simon Zach.  I was on his table last week in Newcastle and he kindly knocked me out with AA against my lowely QQ.  I never got the chance to tell him I thought he played awesome.  Truely no fear.  I think he will do well over there.

Cheers guys.

Early Exit of the Day -

Sadly it is of my friend Cameron Angus, whom I was about to stroll past and take a picture and count from, but was informed by Simon Hennessey that he'd exited, and suffered while doing so.

Not a fast'n'loose type player, I couldn't imagine him not getting his whole stack in a big favourite, and sure enough, he held 7c 7d on an Aspades 7h 3c board.
His opponent:  Ad Kd
Turn:  Kc
River: Kh

Bad news for Willie Tann - after a promising start he is back down to his starting stack after a nasty set versus set confrontation.

... especially cruel seeing as though MB limped with pocket Aces. Willie flopped a set of deuces.

He still seems in good spirits though.

Shortly after I managed to get this snap of er... Willie - among others (ahem)

Did I do bad?

Giant Camera On Crane News Now:

The televisual media have gone all-out this year, with a kind of swooping camera which is probably the only piece of equipment which can get both an overview of the gigantic card room and up close over individual tables.  I have seen it coming close to knocking out unsuspecting dealers, but it's operated with extraordinary agility.

Philip Hilm (final tabled in Copenhagen EPT) -- 4k

I think I just witnessed the quickest call in history.

One guy said call before Mateyboy even reached the 'in' part of 'all-in'

Anyhow, he was calling with 6d 6c on a 9c 3s 6s

The all-in fellow held 4s 4d and looked to be in a spot of bother, until, that is, the Turn brought the rather dangerous 2s

But alas, the miracle didn't arrive. River = Qd

Mateyboy 573 is therefore OUT.

I could not say exactly but he can often be seen playing Bengt Sonnert at 200-400 nl and have been known to have circa 400k each at the table, so no doubt somewhere in the 600-800k region would not be out of the question.   200k pots are quite the norm!!

This guy said Hi as I was walking around in my perpetual poker-player-overload daze... "Didn't we play at the Norwegian championships?"  Yes, indeed we did.  He went on to relate how he'd made me lay down AK on an Ace-high flop with a very convincing flop re-raise out of position..."You reported it slightly wrong," he said, before letting me know I'd been pushed off with a gutshot and flush draw....no hard feelings though, the guy (Jorgen Thorkildsen (I've unfortunately lost the piece of paper on which he spelled this out for me)) has 17,000 in chips, and is doing pretty well for himself.
Good luck my Scandie victor.

Just uneartherd yet another blondeite, this time hidden away on Table 74.

George 'WellChief' McDonald is currently on 8,750 and seems pretty confident.

He's had Aces and Kings, but only managed to take the blinds.

So he's found big hands, but no big action.

Also on his table is Dave Singer, who faired well in the H.O.R.S.E earlier on in the Series.

I just found a bit of paper with this slightly unusual hand on it from earlier - we haven't had a lot of coverage of our French pals, so here's a small knock to Pascal Perrault with a fairly interesting hand involving quads.  Oh dear, sounds like I just ruined the ending...

Flop: Ad Qd Ac.  Matey bets out 250.  Pascal calls.
Turn: Kh  Check-check
River:  Ahrt  Matey bets 575, and gets a quick flat call.  The Aspades gets flashed in a hurry to take the pot, but the 2c kicker explains the earlier reticence...

looks very like the chick that was in prison break

Well Chief is down to 4,650

Flop = K-9-3

Well Chief bets out with T-9, MB minimum checkraises, Well Chief calls.

Turn = 9

Well Chief bets again, MB moves all-in and Well Chief folds.

MB squared

MB#1 moves all-in with Pocket Aces, MB#2 calls with Pocket Kings, but the dealer mucks his hand.

They fish it out, and, due to the harmless 2-8-3-7-T board, the pot goes the right way.

Peter Smythe is OUT -

I saw the cards on their backs, with his Js Jc up against the Ac Ahrt.
The flop brought a Jack, but an Ace along with it (Qd Ad Jh to be exact) and although there were straight tie outs, sort of, he was up and off.

The same match-up (AA vs. JJ) just doubled up Vanessa Rousso from around 5k to 11.  She too got an Ace on board for good measure.

********************************************************************
Some Pre-dinner break Counts:

Paul Garnham     16,000
Richard Herbert   15,200
Iwan Jones        11,500
Simon Hennessey  14,000   ("I'm steadily accumulating chips - isn't that what you're meant to do?")
Howard Lederer   12,000
Paul Jackson      OUT  (Like Snoopy said; I had his count at 1,500, but my connection's gone snaily)
Vanessa Rousso   11,000
Evelyn Ng           8,250
Devilfish Ulliott     14,200
Mel Judah           8,250

Iwan Jones informs me that he suffered the biggest loss having called preflop with Ahrt 2h.  The flop hit - A 2 4 - and he found an opponent with A10 happy to bet all the way.  After Paul had invested something like 6k into this pot, the Four on the river counterfeited his hand and that was the beginning of the end...

Here's Simon Hennessey - Gutshot hoodied and having just snuck into this year's Main Event in a supersat this week.  His positive and upbeat attitude probably annoys some of his poker playing companions who haven't fared so well this trip, and are already yearning for their cold, grey, English home, but he's definitely in the right frame of mind for this competition.

Oh, and his nickname is now 'Goatboy' because that blurry mascot thing you can almost see in this picture is in fact a goat.

About twice a day, a short sharp fire alarm goes off, followed by a loud recording of a woman's voice telling everyone that "This is part of the automated alarm system..." and saying that it will be investigated.  Blue lights flash subtly at the edge of the Amazon room, and everywhere else.  Secondary security features kick in, such as the doors going on autolock, thereby shutting the press out of the press room and forcing the guy with the booby prize seat nearest the door (in this case Tom Murphy, ahahahah) to get up and let the stream of journalists in.

Five to ten minutes after the alarm first goes off, another calm recording comes on saying that it was "determined to be accidental, and the hotel is returning to normal operation."

So used to this are the players becoming, and calmly playing on regardless, that I overheard one of them commenting when it happened last time, "It's not like when the fire alarm goes off there might be a fire..."

I'm not sure if I reported this earlier or not, but around the exit of Edgar Skjervold, fellow Norwegian and online high-roller, Johnny Lodden, also bit the dust.

He was shortstacked almost right from the start, and never quite managed to recover.

It's wierd how big a player he is in poker, yet he gets no attention over here.

Play will recommence in 20 minutes.

Whilst we wait, which three pro's would you like to see win this and why?

Personally, I'd like either Dave Colclough, Phil Ivey, or Doyle Brunson to take top honours.

Dave - 2 words, 'pay rise'

Phil - because he doesn't rely on the 'gift of the gab', just decisions, and it would show all the doubters that even with this field and the amount of luck invovled, the best players are still favourite to come out on top.

Doyle - complete legend and it would be awesome to see someone in their seventies go all the way

A few random thoughts:

-- Annie Duke dresses like a teenager
-- Greg Raymer dresses like a grandad
-- Doyle Brunson IS a grandad!

-- Barry Greenstein looks like the Count in Sesame street
-- X22 looks like Stimpy
-- Todd Brunson is an exact clone of the Comic Book Guy for the Simpsons.

-- Minh Nguyen was the fellow who didn't turn up yesterday. That must have been one hell of a stripper!

Yep they're back and there's still a loooong way to go.  In fact, the phrase 'half way through the day' keeps buzzing round my brain.

Ah well, lets go see what we can see in the main room, but first, Womble update from Ariston, in case Snoops hasn't reported it - he's "done his chips with JJ, JJ, QQ and KK - losing with them all right before the break."  All that and he was about to nip off early, then saw his 'nice' set of hands.

I heard that Akshay has one of the leading stacks at present - c.60k, after a very good start, and then a big confrontation when he had around 30k, with another deep stack.  Unfortunately, he had KK and the other guy AA.  But the King on the flop propelled him to right up among the dinner break leaders.

Just spotted Padraig Parkinson (fresh - well, almost - off his 3rd place finish in the $1,500 No Limit Hold'Em).

It's amazing how you can cover an Event for 9 hours and still not realise that a certain player is at the felt.

Anyhow, here he is, and he's sitting behind a stack of 17,450

Title: Re: WSOP Main Event 2006 - Day 1b - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on July 30, 2006, 05:27:35 AM
Congrats Noflops....

Over here we have blinds of 200/400 ante 25.  Again it looks like half the giant room has been cleared, but there must be still two-thirds of it full...so 1500 players?  Something like that.  I'll go check in a second.

But first:

Padraig Parkinson    18,250
Womble                 2,300
Michael Greco         9,600
Jeff Williams           45,000
Patrik Antonius        6,300
John Juanda           24,000
Willie Tann             11,300
Kevin Daly              13,700
Howard Lederer      13,500
Aage Spets            21,200

This last guy is on Padraig's table, and I caught him asking - "Who are you?  I recognise you..." To which Padraig replied, perhaps expectedly, "Nope, my first time." Aage also just came fourth in the $1,500 NLHE here this week, and his clear good humour is apparently permanent, and not just to do with that nice result.

According to Ariston, there was a slight delay before the restart of play this evening, which was caused by a lady returning to her table and finding her chips gone.  It was actually resolved with recourse to the security cameras - the big stack next to her had won the last hand before the break, and sort of swept her 8,000 in with it, stacked it and left!  It was in all probability a complete accident, and the chips were eventually returned, and play continued.  Must be a bit rattling though, to have your stack disappear from the WSOP Main Event.... :blonde:

Mad Turk is down to just 1.5k after the following turn of events:

MB raised to 800 from the cut-off and Mad Turk flat called from the button.

Flop = 3c Ac Ad

Both players check

Turn = 7s

MB bets 2k, Mad Turk calls

River = 9d

MB bets 2k again, and Mad Turk calls... again.

"If you have the Ace, you win," comments Turk.

MB flips over his hand - no Ace!

Mad Turk claps his hands, shouts "Yes!" and flips over his 7c 8c

Unfortunately, he failed to realise that even though MB didn't have the Ace, he still had the Turk beat with his Tc 9h.

Nice value bet.

Jeff Burke has had a remarkable run up to his current 44,000 or so since this picture was taken - the last big chunk came from eliminating Gavin Smith, no less.  Jeff called Gavin's raise, and they saw a Qd Qc Kc flop.  Gavin bet out, Jeff moved in (for what must have been a sizeable overbet) and Gaving called with Qs 8s.
Jeff showed 9c 3c !   The flush came, and Gavin went.

Yes, yes, that.  Ian Bradley also let me in on how Marc Goodwin exited the comp -

The big chunk was taken off him when he flopped a set of Eights on an Aspades 8s Xs board.  The guy bet, and Marc called.
The turn was a blank, and when Matey bet again, Marc set him in.  There was what one might reasonably call an unnecessary dwell as Matey thought and then said, "I don't want to call - the board might pair," before flipping over the nuts (top flush).

Then the last of it went in when Marc had Ac Kd, and hit an A 7 3 board.  Two other players had seen the flop, and when Marc pushed for 4k the first one dwelled for a while and then called.  A glimmer of hope shone, until he turned over 77 for the flopped set - the dwell had just been trying to get value out of the third Mateyboy!  Ouch.

Mad Turk is OUT

He reraised all-in from the small blind for about 4.5k after the button had raised preflop.

Turk called the clock on his opponent and even started singing that timeless tune 'It's Now Or Never'

Eventually, MB opted for the call and flipped over Kh Qh

Mad Turk announced he had an Ace and showed Aspades 7d

"Put an Ace down. Put and Ace down," demanded Turk.

Flop = 4s 2d 7c

Turn = Js

River = Qc

Haven't seen him for ages and he wasn't in his earlier seat, so I suspect he has been eliminated.

Still too many players left to say 100% though, it is possible he moved tables. He was very short stacked though, so I fear the worst.

1110 left on 110 tables.

In his first WSOP appearance, he managed to find a seat opposite the legendary Doyle Brunson (even took a few chips off the ol' fella)

Just crossed paths with Lawrence Gosney in the corridor.

I didn't realise he played today, but that was probably due to him (1) being an alternate and (2) only playing 5 hands, all of which he lost.

His final swan song was a 7-7 versus Q-Q confrontation which didn't bring him that much required set.

Anyhow, he's still in fine spirits and bracing himself for a tourney at the Bellagio.

This is only Lawrence's second appearance in the Main Event, but he's yet to win a single hand.

This will be the final Level of the Day, meaning that there are only 2 hours left

Talked to Simon Hennessey in the break - he's up to 35,000.  "More 'slow and steady'?" I inquired.  No, came the answer.  He'd "played KK very well" to lose the minimum against an opponent who'd flopped a set, but then became so tilty that he "played K 10 really badly" to win a bigger pot.

Apparently he flopped top pair on a 10-high board, and called 2k on the flop, and 6k on the turn (when a flush draw materialised), leaving himself 15k.  His opponent thought forever on the Qh river, and then checked, in Simon's words, "because he figured me for a good player after that Kings hand."  Simon checked behind, and ended up winning with his Tens, but according to him the right move would have been "push on the turn to not look like a donkey."

I've been ordered to exit the arena and go home by Jen, so that's what I'm going to do.

I'll leave you in her more than capable hands.

Good luck to AndrewT, ActionAxe, KPNuts and any other blondeites left in.

As Del Boy would say...

Bonjour!

Did I mention a nearly unstaunchable flow of words?  This heads up between Paul Parker and Ron 'MadYank' Fanelli comes under this category.  Ron is now in his 36th straight hour of heads up play.  Good luck for the 72hr3min record, there...

Here's Kevin Daly, from two angles.  He's over 25k now (going to go get accurate counts in a minute) due to cracking some Kings with his AQ!  He did come right out and admit that, though.

Recently eliminated is Gwion Jones - who'd brought his stack up over 22k, but lost it all on one big hand with raising and re-raising craziness holding 9c 9d on a Q 2 2 board.  His opponent wasn't going for the Deuce representation, and at this late stage he's gone.

Late night chip builder Michael Greco is up to 50k - and with the leaders not breaking 100k yet he's looking safe.
Bluesquare qualifier John Exley is the last one still in - and looks to make Day Two along with Greco.

Patrik Antonius bets 7k into a several k pot (a bet which leaves very little behind)

His oppoent dwells for an age before folding to a 2d Qs 4s flop.

As a result, Antonius is now on 18,500

I can't resist putting up this picture of ordinarily extremely even-tempered Antonius making what looks very like a rude hand gesture at the table - I quickly add that it is not in any way - just one of these rare golden photographic accidents.

It perhaps helps to be a US-style pro, with $10,000 large-field tournaments popping up everywhere to practise on, when it comes to the time of evening when it starts to feel like the marathon it is.  These guys still look pretty focused, whereas I imagine the multiple long days may take their toll on the qualifiers more heavily...

Then there's the bending and stretching - around the cocktail waitresses, under/over the ropes, behind the TV equipment, away from the spectators as they push to the front of queues.  It's an all-over body workout.

Norseman Anders Berg doubles up his RHS neighbour, with Ahrt Qc against Aspades Kc (probably just what he didn't want to see the shorter stack turn over).
Board:  2h 9c Jd 3d Kd  and at the 11th hour (well, 12th actually) he drops to 13,200.

Other counts from the last 3-miler (less, actually, now there are only 930 players remaining):

Padraig Parkinson     28,000
Ingemar Backman     5,300
Chris Ferguson         18,300
Paul Garnham          18,000
Phil Ivey                 15,000
Kevin Daly               38,525
Simon Hennessey     39,000

No obvious sign of*   Michael Greco, Vanessa Rousso, Davood Mermand, Mel Judah, Dave Ulliott, David Singer, Howard Lederer, Evelyn Ng.

*Could easily have escaped my blurry eyes, however.  Listed players, if you're secret blondeites, and still in, please refrain from wrathfulness.

Good morning poker fans

After an exceedingly quiet first half of the day, things picked up for me in the second bit and I somehow find myself going into Day 2 with 53,425 chips. Finally managed to get paid off with AA. Milked a woman who had TT when I had QQ on an all-rag board. Called a raise with J9, represented on a JJ2 board, checked the turn to feign weakness, then he check-called my river bet, even saying 'there's no way you have the best hand' before he did. Nicked a bit.

Totally tilted a really grumpy guy when I raised with A5, he called with AK, then check-raised me all-in when the flop came A47. I was kind of pot committed so called. Turn 4. River 4 - split pot. He was not a happy bunny.

All in all a very good day. And all after I thought I would spend all day feeling ill with a chest infection - it's not really hit properly yet, I'm just a bit tight across the chest. Like many of the promo girls working here. Bodog must be so annoyed that the promo girls they hired all turned up looking like hookers...

Don't know why they even let spectators in - the buggers can't see anything and just get in the way. There were about 50 announcements made to them not to take flash photography. Funniest moment came when a woman took a flash photo, a floorman wandered over and made an announcement about not doing so, and, as he did, another woman took a flash photo of him telling her not to take a flash photo.

Devilfish is still in - 'Organised chaos - fucking joke' were his succinct comments on the bagging up procedure. He'd earlier had to deal with a drunk spectator who wandered over to have a little chat with him whilst he was playing.

We all had to move to our new table at the end - don't recognise any faces and I think there's only one guy with more chips than me (77,000) and he's directly opposite me, so I should be able to avoid big clashes.

Am now waiting for my prime rib sandwich from room service then to bed.

Hi guys

I seem to have made an appearance on this thread thanks to catching Snoopy's eye halfway through the day. Despite at least three attempts at advising him of the correct spelling of my name, you got Broomham and Broonham in equal measure, neither are correct :) But it looks like a slog doing that job!

I didn't make it to the end despite holding around 20k for several hours after surviving a couple of all-ins earlier on. I was happy with my play but weariness got the better of me around midnight and I got involved in a hand that reduced my chips by a few thou. Tried stealing a pot with 44 on a Q32 board and was called by my heads up opponent with AQ. Q on the river doesn't help either. Still had 12k but that was reduced when I called a short stack's all in (c. 4.5k). I had AQ. He showed K9 and the board of 278 9 5 was pants for me.

My swansong came in an 8-player flop! I limped with everyone else. I had Ad 5d. The flop of A J 8 (all black) looked promising so I bet out 1500. Called by two guys. Turn 7, meant two clubs and two spades out there. I was left with 3k so I dumped it in hoping my A was good enough. It wasn't. The big stack to my right had hit a straight on the turn with a flush draw. He had 9s 10s.

Great experience. I felt I played well and pretty aggressively but the wheels fell off in the end.

Saw a few of the big US names in the flesh.

Hellmuth. Very tall.
Ferguson. Unmistakeable.
Lederer. Shambolic appearance. Get a shave man!
Brunson. Nice wheels.
Evelyn Ng. Nice everything

To name a few.

Like I say, fabulous to be involved.

Thanks to the Ladbrokes team for letting me use their lounge!
