Title: best line in a movie ever
Post by: 77dave on September 03, 2006, 07:16:40 AM
just finished watching empire strike back   (again)

in my opinion

Luke  " You killed my father"

Vader   " No Luke  I'm your father"

has to be the best and maybe most shocking line in a movie period

I think i've said this before but for me it's Sean Connery in The Untouchables:-

"typical wap, bring a knife to a gunfight" (or something similar).

Yes yes yes! The greatest twist in cinema history bar none.

Even the cast didn't know about it until the shoot happened. Mark Hamill was quoted as saying to George Lucas "He's lying right?" when he first read it.

I love the line too, David Prowse who was in the Darth vader suit was saying the lines at the actual filming so that Luke could react and he was given the line "Yes Luke, I killed your father" so that the cast wouldn't know.

Anybody who tells you money is the root of all evil doesn't fucking have any. They say money can't make you happy, but look at the grin on my face, ear to ear, baby You Want details? Fine. I drive a Ferrari, 355 Cabriolet, What's up? I have a ridiculous house in the South Fork. I have every toy you could possibly imagine. And best of all kids, I am liquid. You want vacation time, go teach third grade in public school, your parents don't like it? 'Fuck you, mom and dad.' See how they feel when you're making their Lexus payments

Ben Affleck in Boiler Room, nearly all his lines in that are class.

It’s a little known fact but many of Hollywood’s greatest movie quotes originated in Poker rooms across Europe & the world. Here are some famous conversations and statements that were overheard and plagiarised in screenplays in some of the most popular movies ever made and where they first originated:

‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat.’ As said by Tony G to Surinder Sunar during their heads up battle in the 2004 WPT event in Paris. Tony turned over a full house, Aces over Kings to defeat Surinder’s Kings full. The line was later used by Steven Spielberg in his epic film Jaws.

‘He’s not the Messiah; he’s a very naughty boy’ Phil Ivey’s mum following  press intrusion after Phil arrived two days late home following his Monte Carlo Millions win. Copied by Monty Python and used in the Life of Brian

‘I’ll be back!’ Dan Harrington after his exit from the final table of the 2003 WSOP. Lo and behold he was, and made the final table in 2004. This inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to use the line in his movie The Terminator.

‘Here’s Johnny!’ Johnny Chan announcing his arrival at the final of the 1988 WSOP.
Overheard by Jack Nicholson and used in his film The Shining.

Following his bracelet win at the 2005 WSOP Brian 'the Rookie' Wilson announced to the table ‘It’s been emotional.’ Inspiring Vinnie Jones to use the line in the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

‘Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.’ Phil Hellmuth to Toto Leonidas during their famous altercation during the 2003 US Poker Championships. Copied by Judy Garland during the opening scene in the Wizard of Oz.

‘You gotta ask yourself…Do ya feel lucky? Well do ya…Punk!’ Tony G again, to an opponent on the way to winning last years European Poker Championships at the Vic. Clint Eastwood was on the rail and used the quote in his movie Dirty Harry.

‘Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.’ Phil Hellmuth accepting a particular bad beat at last years WSOP. Clark gable was impressed enough to include the line in the epic Gone with the Wind.

And finally – Julian Thew and Tony Kendall were discussing a particular play at last years Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam. Jules uttered; there’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." Tony just smiled thinking to himself Julian had overplayed his Pocket Tens, meanwhile Samuel L Jackson, playing on the next table remembered the quote and used to great notoriety in his movie Pulp Fiction.

Anyone know anymore

Time for a Sloppy chic flick line I feel (and my fave movie too - City of Angels)

Maggie (Meg Ryan) gets killed soon after Seth (Nick Cage) gave up his immortality. One of his Angel "friends" asks him if it was worth it.... His reply:

I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One

Sigh....

Harold Shand - The Long Good Friday:

1. 'This is...a diabolical liberty'

2.  'You don't go crucifying people outsidea church, not on a Good Friday'

3.  ''Mind my grief'

4.  Attendant: Harold, to keep it all incognito, they're going to collect the body in an ice-cream van.

Harold: There's a lot of dignity in that, ain't there? Going out like a Rasberry Ripple.

With great difficulty!!!!

Fantastic script!

Harold: He'd been nailed to the floor

Jeff: When was this then?

Harold: Well, it must have been just after you saw him and before Alan saw him. Otherwise, you would have noticed wouldn't you? I mean, a geezer nailed to the floor...a man of your education would definitely have spotted that.
