Title: IRISH OPEN LIVE UPDATES - DAY ONE
Post by: tikay on March 26, 2005, 01:02:14 PM
Welcome to sunny Dublin for the paddypowerpoker Irish Open.

It's shuffle up & deal at 5pm, & blonde will be there from start to finish.

Plan, initially, is for Dave Colclough & tikay to play, with Rhow in charge of the updating. Dave, myself, & a little network of blonde-ites, will feed Rhowena with the early action for immediate updating. And once tikay exits, it'll be the full Beauty & The Beast double act. Might take a level or two though, ol 'tikay can grind for ever in these big stack slow clock jobbies. See you mid-evening, then.......

Although the paddypowerpoker Irish Open is promoted by Liam Flood & The Merrion Casino, it is in fact being held at The City West Hotel, which is about 10km west of Dublin.

The CityWest Hotel is amassive conference centre & resort hotel, maybe 1,000 rooms. It has 2 Golf Courses, two Helipads (TWO!,Travelodge's rarely have more than one Helipad...), & is set in lovely countryside.

The Hotel has the swankiest set of courtsey cars you ever saw - a spanking new Rolls Royce, a Mercedes S600, & 4 (FOUR!) top of the range Range Rover Vogues. I fancied a ride in the roller, so asked if they could sort me out for transport to Dublin. No prob, they said, "we'll book a taxi for you".....

Despite all that, it's only 70 Euros a night to get a lovely room here this weekend. The Poker Rate is 90 Euros, but the Easter Break rate is 70 Euros, so everyone is taking an Easter Break!

I asked for the Senior Citizens Discount they said I was FAR too young. Lovely people these Dublin folks....

We have just had the "welcome" speech by Liam Flood & Mr Paddy Power. And on the stage, he was flanked by Tony Cascarino & Teddy Sheringham, both of whom are playing today. In fact, I believe Tony finished 9th or similar in this last year.

The room where the comp is being held is a sorta large ballroom, plenty of room, & all the tables are brand new, very nice.

On one side is a Portakabin jobbie which is the Cashier's office, & next to that, the sponsors have a sort of promotions stand.

One oddity is that we have to pay for tea or coffee - 2 euros for a paper cup served lukewarm out of a flask. How bizarre!

Right now, there are about 6 or 7 one table satellites for the Main Event in progress.

Entry costs 2,000 Euro, plus 150 Euros juice. The juice has attracted some negative comment, but as Paddy Power are adding 20k, in effect we are playing juice free.

10,000 starting chips & a 45 minute clock, blinds start at 25-25-50.

25-25-50? Nah, not a typo, we are playing 3 blinds here, two smalls & a big. No idea why, but it's quite common in Ireland.

Who's here? Well, this is not an exclusive list, but I have spotted the following folks, & doubtless forgotten many more.

A full local crew, headed by the likes of Padraig Parkinson, Noel Furlong, George McKeever, Frank O'Callaghan, Roy The Boy Brindley, Kevin O'Connell, Andy The Monk Black, Donnache O'Dea, & Mike Lacey, aka LuckyBlind.

From France we have Isabelle Mercier, with whom I am sure I am becoming infatuated, she really is some personality, but she's not a lady to get wrong side of.

Dave Colclough heads the big boys from the UK, with Simon Trumper, Julian Thew (and brother Graham who got 9th on Thursday), Howard Plant, Mad Marty Wilson, Julian Gardner & Dad Dave.

Carlo Citrone is here on his comeback of course, & he got 5th in the Omaha last night, in which yours truly busted out in a massive pot in 9th. Poo poo POO.

Burnley John Falconer, Mike Pura (Vienna EPT Finliist), Greg Junior Hill (Walsall runner-up), Jim Reid, David Lloyd, George Geary & his brother, Ian McDonald. By the way, young Greg Hill is on fire, & has just won his seat for tonight in a one table jobbie. Heads up with a local, Matey Boy moved in with K-9, Greg says "call" & flips over KK!

Live Updates from blonde?

Rhow will be on the computer, so Dave & me will be feeding the info to Rhow, & we have a little team of blonde-ites who will be providing info to Rhow. So if you have a player or players who you want to follow, just let us know.

It's a 10k chip slow clock jobbie, so tikay is hoping to grind it out for a good while, but once I am out - which could take, oh, hours - I will be on hand to help Rhow.

TV coverage? Well Paddy Power have a film crew here, & so does "our very own" Poker 425. We will be doing player interviews & stuff for "stock" footage, & some stuff for next week's show.

Oops, forgot Eric The Screw Barker.

I got heads up with Eric in a satellite yesterday. We get all-in, my A-J suited, against Eric's A-5. Flop A-J-5, nice, turn blank, river....5! To be fair, he was chip leader, & he had kindly offered me a 500 Euro "saver" for the runner-up. I decined, being the perfect Gent. For pefect gent, read perfect idiot.

Now Howard Plant has turned up. He is wearing a black jacket, on the back of which is embroidered:

You have to love him, eh?

Talking of refined Gentleman, Rob Shifty Stevens has just wandered in.

You took 100/1 about tikay Russ? You must be MAD.

Mind you, I had a mountain of chips on Thursday in the Hold 'Em, but ran into QQ with my AK, hit my A, & Matey Boy hit his set! 4 off the money, too!

Then last night, exited in the Omaha Final in a monster pot. Story of my life, ALMOST good enough......

Paul Jackson has just gone.
He was holding A10 on the button, sitting with a short stack and gets a caller. The flop comes 10, 8, 2, and Paul raises all in for 2100. Fancying his hand as the winner.
The other player calls and rolls over a fair and square winning QQ's

Peter Roach just took 15K off Sean Fegan on the second hand after the break.
Peter now has a heavty 50K, leaving Sean with a rather depleated 11,500

Well done Mrs C and company for all the updates. I played in today's event ... not very well, sadly, I was KOed in around 80th, very shortstacked, button steal with KJs went wrong when called by big blind with JJ :( ... but on a lighter note, amusing hand of the day occurred only around 2 hours into the tournament ... Ireland rugby international and novice poker player (sponsor's invite) Shane Horgan has invested over 4k of his starting 10k stack in a 9k-ish pot ... board ends up 6666A and poor Shane FOLDS to his opponent's all-in bet on the river :)

They have solved the problem. There was an error in the colour up, and Julian has been given his 20K back.

They have coloured up differently to normal, firstly they have not asked one player to buy all the 100's at the table, and they did the colour up while all the players were out on their break.

But it's all sorted and players have started play again.

Most of these Irishmen have names, if it makes it easier, name them Paddy 1-10. Not much use to us watching though.

Simon trumper all in with AJ against poket J's which Howard Plant is holding.
Flop comes with an Ace and Simon takes the pot knocking the very nice and good in bed, acording to him, Howard Plant out.

Willie tann just doubled up catching another player bluffing with 9,10. Willie had poket K's.

Stuart Fox has QQ against Dave Gardiner with 10,10
cards come 6,K, 10.....2, Q
Stuart picks up a 60K pot and Dave is knocked down to 6K

Scene setting

Day 2

Day 2 arrived and so did the large contingent of British and European players, but the venue was still looked up no staff and no Local players.
Sure enough an hour later the staff and players started turning up stating that they are Irish and dont do British summer time, so when do your clocks move forward tikay was over heard asking Padraig Parkingson oh thats easy when we can be bothered to get up and move them came the reply.

Once inside it quickly became clear that mad Marty Wilson had still not forgiven Howard Plant for eating all the buffet sausages Howard kept claiming his innocence but Marty claimed to have a witness (Mrs Elblondie who was seen in the background holding a tape recorder)

Tikay on the other hand was getting himself geared up for the task ahead on interview he was asked how was his stack was a monstrous 16k came the reply. It was rumoured that during yesterdays play a mop and bucket was called for to clean up the mess from Tikays nose bleed after having to climb over his 50k stack to see his cards
A feat not often entertained by tikay.

At the bar Elblondie was still trying to deny rumours he was Debbie Harry is disguise, while Kevin OConnell was moaning about the lack of Guinness and was heard saying to the barman what you mean we drank all 6 barrels last night.

Anyway over to the blondie team to give us the low down on the runners and riders
