Title: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 06:16:09 PM
Hi. Well, as most of you are in sunny Walsall there may not be many of you to read this, but I am here in Swansea and will do some updating on the £500 Main Event of the Welsh Masters Festival.

Its a double chance freezeout with a 45 minute clock and 2 x 5,000 starting chips. Cardroom supervisor Albert has just got proceedings underway. There are 41 runners in total, including many familiar faces from the poker circuit. Given that we are in Wales and that there is a Blondebash and a festival at the Broadway this week, it is safe to say that most of the runners are, er Welsh.

Hi there

I'll be tuning in all night to keep up with the action so your reports will be gratefully received... Could you tell me whether Mark Clare is playing tonight please...

Thanks

Well, we haven't lost anyone yet, but James Fisher has put a bad beat on someone already.

He held  Tc 4h and called Richard Wilcox's preflop raise.

Flop was  Ad Ahrt Qh

Richard bet, James called.

Turn  6h

Bet, call.

River  Th

Richard had  Ac Kd

Ship It!

Thanks for the updates m8. Do you know what the turnout was like for Thursdays £150 rebuy and yesterday's £250 freezeout?

No sign of Mark Clare I'm afraid. According to cardroom supervisor Albert 'I haven't seen him in a long time'

Anyway, some of the players playing today are:

The three Romanello brothers - Robero, Anthony and Nick
The two Aris brothers - Ed and Tariq
Martyn Cavanagh
Big Alan Davies
John Exley
James Fisher
Nick Risdale
Ian Herbert

thanks mate for that...  the reason behind his absence from the poker rooms maybe is that he's just had a baby boy...

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update

They had 40 runners for the £150 rebuy and 70 for the £250 freezeout.

Whats the payout

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 07:29:46 PM
Fisher is at it again - he played a hand blind and turned over trip fours...

Then he got it all in against Ian Herbert holding  6s 5s on a flop of

 4c 5c 6h

Ian had  3c 3d

The turn was Qc the river  9c and Ian survives, but according to someone on another table 'Its torture being on James's table'.

Every time I look over he's all in, one way or another.

No details of the prize breakdown yet.

Carl Thomas is also playing and there are three Blue Square qualifiers:

John Exley (he qualifies for something every other week it seems)
Paul Rawding
Martin Reeve

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 07:39:10 PM
Three way all in on James Fishers table and yes, you guessed it, James was one of them. All the money went in preflop:

Mateyboy held  2s 2d
John Exley held  Ac Ad
James Fisher held the monster that is  3c 7d

Flop

 7h Td Kd

Turn  Jd

'seven or a three' shouts James and low and behold a 3 falls on the river, but...

its the  3d

James celebrates a bit too early before John cautiously points to his ace of diamonds before raking in a nice pot.

Now, I can understand pocket aces being in the hand, I can understand 7-3 (its James after all), but what the heck were pocket deuces doing getting involved?

Another player here today is Michael Punshon. Those of you who frequent the track may know of him. He's an on course bookie, has done a bit of TV work and is also an ex-poker dealer. He used to work at the Vic, amongst other places. Top drawer dealer by all accounts. Useful player too.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 08:59:54 PM
Last year's winner Ouday Hikary is also here. His victory last year was memorable because he pushed in blind on the final hand before the chip count and found a caller. His 3-5 offsuit liked the A-2-4 flop. His opponent, holding A-J, didn't. Tariq Aris was very annoyed though, as in this final hand coup Uday overtook him in chips and took down the trophy. Tariq had won the other event in the festival and wanted a second trophy for his mantlepiece.

35 left here. Fisher has just pushed Herbert off a pot with 8 high. Ian had a a house, but there were bigger ones out there. James showed and Ian is now wandering about restlessly, trying to calm down.

Martin Reeve has been knocked out by Roberto Romanello. Quad kings were good enough.

James Fisher has gone. He was low stacked and Paul Rawding took him out.

Chip counts:

Roberto '312th' Romanello  35k
Martyn Cavanagh               28.5k
Ian Herbert                      20k
Alan Davies                      19.5k
John Exley                       13.5k
Canadian Joe (W Daoad)    15k

Anthony Romanello has just been knocked out by Alan Davies - pocket tens to Alan's A-J suited. The flush came.

Michael Punshon has been unseated. He had  Qd Th versus  Ts Tc. Money was in preflop. The board improved neither hand.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 11:31:57 PM
With Paul Rawding having his pocket eights cracked by pocket fives, John Exley is once again the longest surviving online qualifier.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 11:45:58 PM
...and the longest surviving online qualifier is now out too. Exley's A-J was no match for Ian Herbert's pocket eights, especially when a further eight fell on the turn.

22 left.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 09, 2006, 11:57:24 PM
A couple of fallers at the last fence. Mark Hall failed to get over his final hurdle, which was pocket sevens v pocket eights. Canadian Joe unmountied (pun especially for snoopy) his ride when pocket queens failed to rise against pocket aces.

Not sure of the spelling of the Aris brothers. Earlier I referred to them as Arees, but this may be wrong.

17 left and Ian Herbert is chip leader with about 70k.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update

Just had an interesting hand involving 4 players. 2 players were all in. One for 3,800 or so, the other for 13,500.

AK v AQ v A9 (all in 3.8k) v JJ (all in 13.5k)

The two with chips behind checked it down.

Jacks were good and we lost the A9 guy, who was Bryn Lacey. Well, he still is Bryn Lacey, but he ain't got any chips left and he ain't winning this one.

Martyn Cavanagh (BB) and Jamie Gubb (SB) play a hand togther. The are the two shortest stacks in the tournament. Jamie makes it 3k with 5k. Martyn deliberates than goes all in for a total of 19.5k, blinds included. Jamie, with 7.5k behind calls.

Its  Aspades 5h for Martyn v Jamie's  Kc Th

Flop  5d 2h 6c

Martyn is crippled and goes out next hand with J-9 versus John Mares' K-J

Mike williams was taken out by Ed Morgan with  Aspades Qh versus  Td Tc

to rub it in, the  Ts fell on the turn.

N Jasim went with  2h 2s verus Ian Herbert's  Ahrt Aspades

AP Hughes, holding  Aspades Kh fell to Nick Romanello's  Jh Js

So,

Mike Williams is our 9th place finisher, winning £550

N Jasim is our 8th place finisher, winning £550

AP Hughes is our 7th place finisher, winning £600

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 03:46:38 PM
John Marles has doubled up through Ian Herbert. The money went in on the turn of an A high flop. Ian had  Aspades 8c but John had  Ahrt Td . The kicker was good anyway, but became even gooderer when the  Th fell on the river.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update

Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 03:59:37 PM
With the blinds at 2,000/4,000 John Marles makes it 12,000 to play. Jamie Gubb moves all in for an additional 23,000. John calls, revealing  7h 7d while Jamie flips over  5s 5d

Flop

 4d 9c Ahrt

"Higher, higher" says John as the  5c hits the board on the turn.

"oh no" says John

River is the  6h and Jamie is now looking healthy on over 70,000.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 04:10:32 PM
Ian Herbert is the 6th place finisher, winning £800.

His  Kc Jd ran into John's  Kd Qh and the board was all low. Ian had returned as chip leader but lost a series of hands, eventually finding himself short stacked before this hand occured.

Ed Morgan has been eliminated in 5th place, winning £1,000

A very unfortunate exit.

He had  Ac Kc on a board of

 6c Ad 8c 8s 9c

giving him the nut flush, but John Marles had  Aspades Ahrt for a house. Ed can't quite believe it as he walks away shaking his head.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 04:34:31 PM
Chip counts:

John Marles 160k
Alan Davies  120k
Nick Romanello 90k
Jamie Gubb 40k

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 04:57:45 PM
Alan Davies is playing strongly and has forced John Marles to fold a few times to preflop reraises and had taken the lead in chips, but...Nick Romanello has just pushed him off a big pot on a flop of

 Ad  Jh 2c

Nick bet the flop, Alan raised and Nick went all in. Alan folded for the additional 45k or so, showing the  Aspades . Nick mucked without showing.

Nick, John and Alan have roughly the same sized stacks now with Jamie Gubb the short stack.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 05:11:48 PM
Well, its all changed here. Alan Davies has gone from chip leader to short stack in a matter of two hands. He lost a pot to John Marles when raising 20k to John's 10k river bet on a

4s 5h 8c Ac Qd board with no action before then in the hand. John showed a queen, Alan mucked without showing.

Then, in the last hand of the level Alan raised to 15k from the small blind. Jamie Gubb, who had made up some ground a few hands earlier, flat called.

Flop  4d Jd 3d

Alan bet 15k, Jamie called.

Turn  Kh

They both checked.

River  2h

Alan bet 15k. Jamie moved all in for another 25k or so. Alan called and turned over  5s 6s for a straight.
But Jamie had hit a dream flop holding  Ad 2d and scooped the pot, taking the chip lead in the process. They are now on a ten minute break.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 05:17:23 PM
Actually, Jamie isn't quite the chip leader, but he's up there. Here are the counts as the blinds go up to 3,000/6,000.

John 151k
Jamie 140k
Nick 95k
Alan 26k

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 05:21:49 PM
Alan Davies finishes 4th, picking up £2,000

He moved all in for his remaining 26,000. Nick called quickly.

Alan had  Tc Ts versus Nick's  Ad Jd

Flop  2c Kd Th

Turn  Qs

giving Nick a straight.

The river was the harmless  6d

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 05:35:54 PM
NIck Romanello has departed in 3rd place, winning £3,000

On a flop of  8c 5s 7d he moved all in with  8h 6s and was called by Jamie, who had  Kc 8d

No help from turn or river. Jamie and John are now heads up.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 05:36:43 PM
Jamie 260k
John 150k

There was a deal three handed. They have all taken £5,000 and the last two are now playing for the trophy.

Title: Re: The Welsh Masters - Live Update
Post by: AlrightJack on September 10, 2006, 06:14:48 PM
We have a winner...

John Marles is the Welsh Masters Champion officially winning £8,000

therefore

Jamie Gubb is the Runner Up taking home £4,000

In the final hand Jamie moved all in on a flop of

 9s 4s 7s

John called

Jamie had  3s 3h

John had  Qd Qc

Turn was  2d , river  6h

And that, as they say, is poker.
