Title: Top Gear Presenter critically ill
Post by: TightEnd on September 21, 2006, 01:30:24 AM
Richard Hammond rolled a rocket powered car at 300 mph when one of three parachutes failed to open in Yorkshire today. Airlifted to hospital where he is said to be "critical"

Filiming for Top Gear

Horrible news, seems like a lovely guy.

Thoughts with him and his young family.

That's bad news, hopefully he'll pull through. He's a great character. Great on Top Gear and Brainiac.

Said to be "stable"

Said to be "stable"

That sounds much more promising than critical.

I am occasionally "forced" to watch Top Gear by my 18yr old son and have to admit to having a bit of a granny crush on him.

Hope he pulls through okay.

I am starting a 14 day celebration of fruit and vege.  Kind of like Jamie Oliver, hopefully by showing the vast range of fruit and vege available, we can help poker players who sit at the table for many hours eat more healthily. Each day the avatar will change to a new fruit or vege.

I just read in one of the news reports he spoke to the rescue crew. Surely this has to be a positive thing.

Better than actual brain damage... injury suggests perhaps not permanent.

just seen this on the news.

It sounds like there is a slight improvement,I do hope so, I' am a massive fan of the show and him.

Not sure about all the media taking photos of the likes of Clarkson going in and out of the hospital,I do think Clarkson and richards family could do without it at the moment imo.

I work at Uni just behind it and there must have been 40+ press around the Hospital all day. Loads stopping people for quotes or what they thought.

Hope he gets well soon :(

indeed they do hope he makes a full recovery (according to hospital sources yesterday) so it suggests it is serious but not permanent.

Sounds like the kinda thing they would do.

Make James the Brittish land speed record holder and still call him Mr Slow.

James May was originally scheduled to do the shoot but the availability of the car changed to a different weekend when Hammond was due to shoot not May. Thus they switched assignments, May getting the gig to review a new Bugatti, apparently

apparently the first thing Clarkson said when he came into the hospital to see Hammond was "Hamster, I've always said you were a shit driver!" (I didn't make that up) Hammond laughed at that so it might not be as bad as they thought.

From the BBC Website:

Top Gear's James May says he is convinced his fellow presenter Richard Hammond is "perfectly intact" after a conversation at his hospital bedside.

Mr May said it was not a long talk "but it was a conversation".

"I'm not a doctor but I am his mate and I believe that deep inside the Hammond I know is perfectly intact," he said.

Apprently the only visable injury he has is a black eye!!! Amazing how safe things can be made these days.

That last Bugatti they reviewed was awesome - that would be a good gig.

Great news about the Hamster :)
