Title: I-Pod thingys(non-poker)
Post by: Karabiner on August 31, 2005, 09:22:04 PM
Could someone give me some guidance with these walkman type things.

I'm ready to buy one and had a look around the Sony shop, where the top of the range jobbie
costs about £180 and would hold my entire CD collection just about.

Is the Apple version any better, and are there any marked differences between the two brands ?

Opinions/advice would be much appreciated.

Apple ipod is the best, there are 2 versions, the more expensive one will hold more music but the cheaper one holds a lot, Argos is the best place to buy, we returned one after 6 months with a small problem and they replaced it straght away

Hi there, i've got an ipod mini which I bought direct from apple have to say its superb

I've got loads of cd's downloaded onto it and two things which i've bought off ebay for it are  mains charger (instead of plugging into laptop)  saves hours  and car charger

Its very touchy though :)  have to be gentle with it lol

average song size = 5meg, average album size = 12 songs, so about 60 meg for an album.

so 150 albums would take up 9000 meg of space. Thats roughly 9 gigabytes then.

And you've filled up your 100 gig hard drive? You must have a lot of er..., adult entertainment on there iron ;)

I have more stuff on my ipod than i can possibly listen to. you'll have no worries there ralph.

Karabiner, I-pods are a must,

the sound quality on them is much better than any other MP3 player or music player i have listened too, also they are very stylish :)

nooooooooooooo Ipods are evil evil evil, get yourself an Archos Jukebox, they play video and store photos as well loads of other stuff.and boast a range of huge HDD's

They retail high in Uk but can be snapped up on ebay for much less itsw ehrre i got my first one. If your after purely music players Creative do a massive range each with large capacity and much better sound perofmance ( and no problems regarding converting tunes).

1.          I caught the end of something on Radio 5 today about a new thing being launched by Sony in the next couple of days, plays music, DVD, games. What's that all about?

2.         Can an ipod play MP3s?

I have a 40gb ipod and it has 8284 songs on it, taking up 32.25 gig. You can get a 60gb photo ipod now and they are not much more money so I would suggest one of those if you budget reaches to it. Dixons Tax Free or Dixons online are doing them on special at the moments. I think they are/were on special at Amazon.co.uk as well. Play.com is also worth a search. As a few people have said, there is also the ipod mini which a bit smaller but is only 5gb. Also the ipod shuffle which is minute but doesnt hold too much. If you like much, I would suggest one. It is also very easy to link to your car, no more need for carrying round lots of cd's (or casettes!) as every single song you own is on there.
PSP is ok but is more an games console. YOu can buy the memory stick but even a 1gb (which I have for my K750i phone) can cost over £100.
Ipods can play MP3's and also something called AAC which is even better quality and a much smaller file size. When you import your CD's to your computer (via itunes) you can select to automatcially import as an AAC file.

psp 1gb memory sticks will be £80 (official) an £60 (unofficiial) for £179 for gaming and UMD (Not DVD) Movies (smaller discs) although buying a memory stick means you can just slap movies from pc onto your psp, it also plays mp3's but has nowhere near the storage of a ipod/jukebox but i'm still gettin one hehehe theyr eleased at midnight tonight.

Will say one good thing about ipods though theya r eevil. the msuic quiz game on em is pretty cool hehehehehe where you guess the name of one of your own tunes lol

Simon thanks for all that I was worried about all the MP3s that fell on to my HDD from the ether. I was looking for a basic MP3 player but I think ipod is the way to go. Interesting point about the K750i, I'm due to get (when O2 sort out the stupid PAC code) a P910i.

Slight diversion here..... what night is your LNP Ace being shown? It's just started here, don't tell me it was last night!

Hi Robert
I am on Late Night Poker tomorrow night Early hours of Friday morning. I am gutted actually, our Sky+ hard drive has developed a problem (system fault) and will not record so now I can not record it. Any of you good people have a DVD recorder and care to tape it for me please?
Going to the P910i, I have to say I did look at one of them and liked them very much. Depending on your usage both are great. I went for the K750i purely because it is so much smaller. The internet is pretty cool on it as well which was one the main reasons I was going to get the P910i. The video capabilities and the camera are great for the K750i as well. I actually have a 4mg pixel  Pentax Optio S camera which is great but the camera is so much more useful now. It also has a digital radio and, whilst i have not done it yet, i understand can also be used for the remote control for the TV !! They are about to rlease a new K750i but calling it something else. Basically it will be a walkman phone. Idntical in all internal aspects but vrey sexy on the outside and a bigger memory cadr. May even be out in the UK now.
Anyone know how to get a movie so it plays on my phone. Or even better, where to buy / download them from. I have found some but they dont play on my phone.
As BlueWolf says, the memory sticks are actually cheaper than I stated. The one I mist use for my phone is the Memory Stick Duo plus or something, which is smaller. It does have an adapter though that means you can use it for the PSP.

Cricky I didn't know the damn phone could do so much. I have a PDA that acts as a remote control.

Looking forward to seeing LNPA.

That would be awesome if at all possible ironside, thanks a bunch.
Yes Robert, does a load of stuff. I have always been a Nokia man from day one (i loved the old 5110 ha ha), tried a few others along the way but went back to Nokia. The one day, I got the Sony T610. Now, I am Sony only! So much attention to detail and of course anything Sony is good looking. Whilst it does do a lot, it obviously lacks a great deal in terms of spreadsheets etc. For a "Home" use phone, there is nothing better.

I think it's terrific, just plug my Ipod in and away we go, great sound quality, portable. Put off buying a new sound system because of this

For people looking to avoid going the oft-travelled iPod route. The Creative Zen sleek is a strong rival to it. Review (http://www.t3.co.uk/reviews/entertainment/mp3_player/creative_zen_sleek)

I nearly got a free iPod at Cincinattis a couple of weeks back when a guy left his beside me on the final table inthe £10 rebuy. I'm too honest though & handed it in.

Reason for Edit: Link was SNAFU'd

I've got a Creative Zen Micro

It has a lot more features than the ipod mini

i.e fm radio, removable battery, 5gb memory, voice recorder etc

and its cheaper aswell.

I've just sent mine back as it has developed a fault on the headphone jack >:(

very good customer support :)

The creative zen is generally regarded however a superior bit of technology.

However, ipod is the coolest bit of kit you can buy. I'm a slave to fashion so its the one for me.

However, if you are not worried about image, then maybe the zen is a better choice.

Nearly full with mp3s? Or nearly full with your secret pr0n stash?

How did you encode them? VBR is the best both for storage space vs quality. If you have sampled at 256 or higher then the size of the mp3 is a lot higher, for very little gain in quality.

Or did you back up into another format? Or even raw WAV !

Im waiting for an OGG player tbh

After digesting all the blonde feedback for which I am grateful, I too went for the I-Pod mini.

And with a bit of help from an ageing techno-guru (he gave me someone else's phone number) !

I somehow managed to get over 400 tunes onto it, and it looks pretty damn cool too.
