Title: Amsterdam Master Classics: Day Two - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on November 09, 2006, 12:09:11 PM
Hi all, it's 1pm here Amsterdam time, and Snoopy's out foraging for food before we trundle back to the casino.  I will be taking my laptop, should the worst happen fast, and you'll be back to a double update.  I just wanted to encourage watchers to encourage Snoopy - he's working his skinny little fingers to the bone, and if I hadn't had an Offer I Couldn't Refuse, I'd be by his side (where I belong).

So, lots of good vibes from the UK and Europe for players and lone reporter - and Watch This Space for your updates commencing in around 45 minutes.

P.S. Thanks Danafish for that picture; it's made my morning.  I'd really like to believe the cat has my best interests at heart.

Leave your lappie Jen..you won't be needing it for a while. Positive thinking and all that..no self fullfilling prophecies.

You're in there now so might as well go out and win it.

Have fun today and the best of luck (or maybe just no bad luck will be enough.)

And for snoops.

RUN SNOOPS, RUN! :)

Jen - HERO-INE-ESS

Both of you - get the job done!

I am supposed to be "working" today, but I've managed to find a PC & I'll take a sneaky peek every now & then.

You've heard of an American Warewolf in Paris, well this morning was like an English Beagle in Amsterdam.

Beagles are meant to pretty good at navigating, but not this one. Everywhere looks the same! Walk along one river and you get to another that looks exactly the same as the last. I left markers to remind me, but they're no good if you forget what they are. I got half way back then found myself a little lost, being forced to ask for directions.

Unfortunately, my "Wo ist sexy time? (http://milbut.org/smilies/00001655.gif)" request seem to fall on stony ground, and the few clever clogs (yeeeeeah) who did understand me simply answered in their native language. Couldn't understand a ruddy word, it was always double dutch to me (ooh, back of the net!)

But in the end, I did manage to stumble back into my hotel, just in time to escort young Jennifer over to the Holland Casino, ready for Day 2 of the Amsterdam Master Classics, which, from what I understand, is just about ready to start.

Good luck, Jennifer!  ;cheerleader;

Ambulance for JP Kelly! (http://milbut.org/smilies/ambulance.gif)

According to Jen, he had amassed a 30k stack but blew it at the last minute last night. Not a happy bunny apparantly.

From what I understand, Nic Szeremeta was also a late casualty.

Christian Grundtvig (Paris WPT winner) is OUT.

Got it all-in with Kings but was outdrawn by the Th 9h of Christian 'Tox'.

2 Christians, both from Denmark, but the younger of the too triumphed when the A-Q-2-8-J brought him a straight.

During the break, I managed to catch up with a few name players, oh and Matt Tyler.  ;hide;

Rob Yong: "Not going well, down to just 7 now. Missed a flush draw."

Rolf Slotboom: "Lost a decent amount of my stack without even seeing a flop. Still in double figures but I had to fold Queens pre-flop to Mark Teltscher."

Karl Mahrenholz: "I'm hovering around 30k, but I can't complain seeing that I was on 1.6k late last night. Managed to double up a couple of times though. Queens, which I slowplayed, and then A-K vs A-J in the blinds. Got lucky on that one, but I've been re-raising people and managed to get my 15k up to just under 30."

Matt Tyler: "Slowing down a bit, a couple of big stacks have come to our table"

Paul Parker: "Anyone seen my glass of wine?"

The Camel eliminated Roy Brindley earlier today.

Roy raised to 1,200 from under-the-gun with A-K, Keith made it 4,200 and Roy moved all-in for 35,000.

Of course, Keith called with his Aces and is now around the 70k mark.

I assure you, this is officially the longest minute in the world and has been known to last around the fifteen minute mark. I think we're currently on aorund 5 on this occassion.

Perhaps time has stopped due to an alien invasion here in the Holland Casino, that would explain the delay.

Well, Jen's back with the mere mortals, and she's doing okay, taken a few pots but not really won any big ones. The blinds have chipped her down a tad, but she's still on a very playable 19k, plenty of time left for her.

She is slightly uncomfortable with the chap to her right who, apparantly, is an absolute fruitloop, so she's having trouble playing with that chap. Hopefully he will either be moved or eliminated and Jen can play more freely, without worrying about the maniac next door.

She is using the dirty dancing bananas as inspiration and, as a sign of my support, I've decided to risk life and limb with my fellow mods by sending out some good dirty dancing banana vibes.

Look away now please, kids.

Goooooooooooooooooooo Jen!!!

Just witnessed a massive pot involving overnight chip leader Urid Holf (seated right).

As a result he is down (yes, down) to 70k after flopping the second nut flush against the nut flush.

The board read 9s 3s 7s 4c 5d with Aspades 4s just pipping Ks 5s to the post.

Ouch.

My bananas don't seem to be doing the trick at the moment as Jen is down to several thousand. I'm hoping that they're long term good luck dirty bananas.

"I've halved my stack after playing Tens badly," weeps Jen.

"I raised pre-flop and both the maniac and Marcel called. I checked the A-J-5 Flop intending to check-raise, but they both checked. I didn't think anyone had an Ace as there was two of the same suit on the board, so I bet the Queen Turn and although Marcel folded, the maniac called. Then I gave it up on the Jack Turn and checked, he checked behind me and showed Q-8. My own fault really."

Yet to make that first visit, I assume it might make updating a rather tough task.

Pippa Flanders 'committed suicide' according to Paul Parker.

She raised with Eights and called a re-raise for all her stack only to find herself dominated against Jacks.

That Jonas Molander is on fire the last couple of months.  He has played all the EPT's and made one final one very near final in London. He was my table buddy for a couple of events in London during EPT week.  He is quite an interesting player in that he somehow skims under the radar but always manages to get chips.  He has no fear and looks about 17!  Due a biggie almost certainly.

I waltzed back into the cardroom to be greeted by a feast of action. The first of which involved a rather welcome, but ultimately nerve wracking double up for Julian Gardner. With 15k already in the pot, Julian glanced down at the Ace-Five-Four Flop, and then at Mateyboy's 10k bet before moving in for what looked like another 10k. Mateyboy cleary knew that he was lagging behind, a pause which must have brought an inner smile to Julian, but he was virtually obliged to call due to the re-raise being so little in comparison to the pot. Also, there was a flush draw on the Flop, which must have contributed to the final call, a play which eventually led to him shoving in his 10k and revealing Kings. Of course, Julian did have his nuts in the palm of his hand and turned over a rather tasty A-T. But although it looked invincible to only a King, the Turn, as it usually tends to do, would have Julian's bowels moving in and out like the clappers as it brought a third heart, and therefore a flush draw for Mateyboy. A red Eight on the River, but not a heart, and Julian was finally allowed to breathe a big sigh of relief, scooping the 55k pot in the process. Watch out Amsterdam, you're creating a monster there.

And just before the Julian Gardner double up, I was treated to two biggish hands being played out simultaneously on neighbouring tables. Armed with my notepad and pen, I stood in between the two tables, eagerly awaiting their conclusion, whilst also making sure I didn't miss a bet.

On one, we had Edgard Skjervold, a friendly Norwegian pro who finished an admirable second in January's Copenhagen EPT, involved in a 10k pot and a Flop of Aspades Js Tc. Although both he and his opponent dipped into the think tank, both decided to check the flop, before Edgar took it down with a 4.2k bet on the 8c Turn. Not a huuuuuge pot obviously, but it was a vital one for Edgar who is now on 40k after struggling for most of the day.

Meanwhile, as this handed petered out (I honestly thought it was going to be bigger due to the think tankage), we had a meaty 4-way hand on Matt Tyler's table. Jonas Molander, who finalled in Baden and just missed out in London, was one of three callers - the others were the small blind, who only had 300 left, and Paul Parker in the Big.

The flop came Q-9-9 and everyone checked, except Billy Big Stack Jonas who glanced around momentarily before nonchalantly placing a 6,400 bet in the middle. The remaining 300 of the Small Blind went in, with a prayer of clasped hands to boot, only to leave Paul Parker with what appeared to be a very tricky decision, as he counted out his chips and seriously looked like he was going to make his move. However, he ultimately made the right decision in folding as Jonas held a monster A-9, which was too much for the all-inner's 8-8 to handle.

Another down and Jonas adds to his already mammoth stack.

Well, the lucky banana does have magic powers after all as Jen has just doubled up. She knew she was going to have to survive and all-in, and she did. On this occassion she held Pocket Fives, pushed all-in for an extra 6k, only for the original raiser to make an understandable call with A-Q. No Ace or Queen means Jen is now up to 15k.  ;applause;

Hello, this is Jen.  Having made that nice race-y double up, about two hands later I was on the big blind with Qh 6h.  Small blind called, that was that - just the two of us, flop Qs 6s 3d.  He bets 2,400, I push all in for 17k, call.  He shows Qd Jc
Turn:  Js

And I was already heading for the door on the Ac river.

I am just about to have a mind-relaxing mini-nap and eat half a jar of marshmallow fluff before joining Snoopy back in the Press section.  I have to say that I am now making a resolution to be more sympathetic when people want to have a moan at me about the vagaries of tournaments (as long as it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes).

I feel like I've let the side down, somewhat, but can only thank Peter for giving me a shot; what a great experience, and didn't donk myself (and, vicariously, him) out of the thing.

You'll get me on the update mission tomorrow, if I can convince Snoopy that a day off 'sightseeing' is what he truly needs now.

Sometimes, when I'm either sat at my laptop relaying the goings on back to the virtual world or running up and down the long red stairs, I can miss a big hand, an exit or a funny quote. On this occasion, it was a big hand, and one that involved CardPlayer Europe editor, Rolf Slotboom, and young Gutshot player, Mike Tse.

Luckily, whilst I was loitering in the pressroom, my ringside reporter, Paul Parker, was on standby, waiting to make a mental note of any fun and frolics that I might be missing.

On this hand, he only had to swivel around 180 degrees to be treated with a front row view of the action. With Rolf's Dutchness attracting a whole host of fellow countrymen towards the table, shouting and cheering in the process, he called all-in with Queens, but found himself up against those dominating Cowboys of Mike Tse.

With a King hitting the Flop, the future looked bleak for the Pot Limit Omaha specialist, but with a Ten and a Jack to boot, he'd somehow managed to Turn an open ended straight draw with eight outs to save him, a lifeline that thoroughly excited the restless crowd.

And as the Ace hit the river, the spectators erupted leaving Rolf to rake in a chunky pot. The unfortunate loser, Mike Tse, was left with a paltry 3k, but unlike many, took his defeat with pride and dignity.

I might as well share some stories from the last half hour on my table, seeing as I can't turn off that part of my brain that wants to update stuff...

Background:  On my immediate left was sat a marvellous example of a maniac, chipped up and a dangerous preflop reraiser (but just as likely to call your big re-raise with 78).  Would have been great if I'd had a few more chips.  Anyway...

One of the many Christians from the TV table (young, in hat) re-raised 6k from the big blind (he'd made it 2-something).  He flat calls.
Flop:  rag rag rag.  Christian bets out 14,000 (half his reasonable stack, pretty much).  A long think later, and Sam (for that was "I'm here to play" guy's name) min raises.  Immediate all in.  Christian shows Ks Kh
Sam shows Ad 8d

No improvement (i.e. ace) and that was the kind of thing which was happening pretty regularly over there.

There will be a dinner break in 5 minutes.

There shouldn't be too long left today as we are already on the 70s and we only have to reach 54 before the day's play draws to a close.

Before I go, here a few more anagrams for you to untangle. No-on got William Thorsson yesterday, let's see if someone can get 5 out of 5 today.

UL Jen complete cold deck no way out, u was destined to go out that hand or make the final, in my experience every comp has a hand like that, it either makes u or breaks you, neither of you did anything wrong either in the hand he is putting u on 2nd pair/flushdraw/strait draw and he got it wrong and got lucky, thats mainly how pepole make chips by there opp getting there reads wrong and getting lucky or getting there reads right and getting unlucky, apart from the obvious take great satisfaction from the fact u got it in ahead keep doing that and u will go very far ,   Stu

Thierry Uld Berg
Osman Mustanoglu
Jonas Molander
Mark Bolliger

The name in there that should shock you is that of Jonas Molander, who not too long ago was 100k+

According to the rest of the table, he pretty much blew his chips, always getting his money in behind, finally running an A-Q into the Pocket Queens of J Koops.

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics: Day Two - Interactive
Post by: snoopy1239 on November 09, 2006, 08:05:18 PM
Paul was debating whether or not to move his 10k in before the blinds (he was two away from the big), but I suggested that he'd be better off waiting for the blinds to pass and shove it in blind as soon as they fold around to him. Well, he decided to go for that option, but didn't have to wait too long as he actually found a hand by the time he reached the small blind.

Nice job, imagine seeing him on the final!  ;topman;

The two players either side of the dealer are Jerome Bradpiece (left) and Jan Pieter Postmus of the Netherlands (right).

Both were involved in a big pot, one in which the Brit took down when he re-raised all-in on a board of Ks Jd 6d 4c 2d

With 20k in the pot before they even reached the River, the Dutchman opted to fold.

And here are JJ Hazan and Barny Boatman just after a battle of the blinds contest.

On a board of 7s 9s 3s 8s Tc, JJ checks, Barny bets 3.3k and Hazan makes it 13.3k.

Barny calls after a brief spell in the think tank with Qs 5h to take the pot, beating Hazan's 3c 9c.

"Were you close to folding?" I asked Barny.

"He'll say no but I reckon he must have been," replied Hazan.

"I played it badly," added Hazan, "I should have bet the flop."

Stuart Fox exits in dramatic circumstances.

Jerome Bradpiece raises to 3k pre-flop and receives 3 callers, one of whom is Stuart on the button.

Flop = Kd Jd Qc

Jerome bets out 15k, Peter Dalhuysen (or 'silly hat' as Keith called him) smooth calls and Stu moves all-in for 75k.

Jerome calls with a set of Queens, Foxy has the flush draw with 6d 4d, no improvement, Foxy is OUT and Jerome is one of the chip leaders.

"I can't believe he called," commented Keith, "I don't know how he can think he didn't have the straight."

Matt Tyler has doubled up. Thinking the original raiser was weak, he re-raised with K-T from the big blind and pushed all-in on the Flop.

Unfortunately, his opponent has Pocket Nines and called, but Matt managed to create 10 more outs on the Turn, one of which he made when the Jack on the River gave the northerner a straight.

What a turd call by Brad'donk to knock out the Foxmeister..!!!!

grrrrrrrrrr

Have to say I understand the call. The guy may have correctly put foxy on a flush draw or even top 2 etc. Any of you who have sat with foxy for a long period of time would also understand the call as he can be fiercely aggresive. I probably dont make the call (hell I dont get myself into that position with QQ- where was the preflop action?) but lets not just attack a guy for calling the monster hand of 6 high with 2nd set. Good move foxy but bad timing.

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics: Day Two - Interactive
Post by: ariston on November 09, 2006, 10:05:36 PM
the above is not meant to be any critisism of foxy by the way, quite the opposite. These type of moves are how you get the megastacks that foxy is very good at getting. I am sure if foxy knew the guy was as strong as a set of queens he wouldn't have done it. I would imagine foxy was trying to make them go away from AK/KJ or a bigger flush draw.

nut flush draw - ie 12 outs with u having redraw- qqq 60%fav
2 pair (kq, qj, KJ)- qq huge fav either- 85% fav v 2pair with kings or drawing to running jacks v qj
other flush draw- qqq 70% fav (or 50/50 v ten flush draw)
slow played aces- qqq 75% fav
flopped str8  (dont think foxy moves in myself, he may wait till turn or small raise)- qqq obviously big dog but only hand that kills you apart from kkk where u are really screwed.
thin air- nuff said.

I think its an easy call although the guy played the hand terribly and foxy deserved better for a real ballsy play.

And with Gilles Haddad taking 56th (J-J v A-K, K on Flop) and Y Zhou 55th (A-4 v A-5, Ace high Flop), we have reached out 54 players target and are finished for the day.

Correction, Gilles Haddad had 5k left and has scraped into Day 3.

asking for trouble imo playing queens slowly at that stage of the comp. He allowed foxy to make a play with outs and imo he didnt deserve to be rewarded by winning such a huge pot. To not get busy and define your hand preflop then just smooth call the 15k (hope I have read the hand right but I aint going back to find it lol ) is not wise. QQ is one of the hardest hands to play and I think winning the pot with little risk (ie defining your hand preflop or certainly raising on the flop) is the best way. A flop of KQJ with 2 of a suit is probably the worst possible flop for QQ as if foxy doesnt make his play there are so many scare cards that can hit the turn to make you fold ( 15 cards put a flush or 4 str8 on the board where you would have to fold to an allin).

Remember folks poker is a game of oppinions and in mine he played the hand badly but made a good call- maybe he called the flop hoping foxy would make a play, only he knows (this could only be the case if he instacalled foxys reraise).

he raised to 3k pre-flop, foxy and the other guy called.

Jerome then bet 15k on the flop, played it well imo

How did he slowplay it? He raised preflop and potted it on the flop. Its wrong to say he played it bad, what else can he do!

Folding QQ here is crazy, foxy needs to have a straight almost 100% of the time to even consider folding (seeing as he was getting 2/1 on the call and he fills up 1 in 3 roughly), and he is too good to just nutpeddle in spots like this. Easy call.

ok fair enough i missread the earlier post. If he raised preflop and then led the flop yeh he played it well. I read it as him flat calling the 15k on the flop. I stand corrected and hope the guy does well ( I still like the call however it came about)- If he led at the flop for 15k I love the play and agree with you totally.

This guy getting flamed for the call from camel is ridiculous. He played it fine imo. And tighty woulda folded preflop this late on, ask him, he does ;)

I've asked about 5 players about this hand since play finished and all would call. So it seems I'm in a minority of one in passing.

However, I would definitely fold in this spot.

The reason? Silly hat has called the bet of 15k smooth on the flop out of a stack of approx 40k.

Stuart's raise shows such extreme strength when silly hat is almost dutibound to call even if the original betor passes it almost must be a straight IMO.

And what exactly has silly hat got here?

It is quite possible in my opinion that the trip queens is up against trip kings and a straight. And drawing to one card. Not the way I want to be allin in a comp worth half a mill to the winner.

I was wrong. But I still would definitely pass in this spot.

So there.

This is why I love The Camel (and not just cos he's QPR like me) - he takes a position on a hand, accepts his opinion is in the minority, but justifies his opinion with supplementary thought processes and sticks by it.

There's more than one way to skin a cat in this game...

I think I am in the minority with the Camel here I think I would probably have folded as well.  I don't really like my set when I am re-raised, I suppose much of my opinion would depend on how foxy had been playing.  But if this was say my first hand at that table and had no prior info on my oppo I think I fold and wait for a better spot to get all my chips in especially in a comp of this size.

To be honest I don't know if I could have laid it down. I am with the Camel on this one in that laying it down probably is the best tournament play but I don't know if I could have. If you play a set like the way he did (which is absolutely the right way to do it of course) but then someone insta calls you preflop and reraises you on the flop for all your chips on a very draw heavy board (when he could of course also have trip kings and the made straight)) if you have enough chips back to have a a shot at taking the tourney it might be the right play to make to lay it down..but laying down a set is always tricky.

Having played w/ the Fox a few times I would find it hard to lay down this hand ;all-in;

It would have been a great laydown but maybe that is what is needed sometimes ( I am learning this these days)

Good luck Camel, JUST WIN BABY, JUST WIN ;goodluck; ;envious; ;mexicanwave;
