The players are milling and slowly taking their seats - another smaller sellout here in Luton, which we can hopefully cover fairly substantially...

Nick was here nice and early, and we've watched a few names you'll know drift through the doors, including Joe Grech, who wants to "let the world know Joe the Joker is here!" and Stuart Rutter, the brothers Khajuria and Ali Mallu.

Any minute now, expect actual news of play, and after a short interlude (during which I will haggle for the full seating arrangements) a list of all runners...

 :hello: from Luton.

Players are seated and we're surely only minutes away from the cards being in the air. Other notables spotted include: Willie Tann, Steve Vladar, Bad Girl, Simon Trumper, Carlo Citrone and Mickey Wernick. No sign of JP Kelly as yet though.

Alright Jack has informed us that there are 100 runners, 10 of which are on a self dealt table (it'll be the first to break). Five players are on a complete freeroll having qualified through a Poker Player Magazine promo.

DEAL or NO DEALER:

It seems the 10 on the self dealt table were actually reserves (the tournament had a capacity of 90) and were offered the chance to play from the beginning allbeit on a self-dealt table.

Apparently, word from Bhupinder Kholi (at the self deal table) is that Ali Mallu, also at said table, suggested that they all just sit there for an hour, and when they break the first table - theirs - they all just take their 10k and move.  Not that he'd be able to do that, I reckon.  Anyway, one objected, and they're off too.

Jim Reid bites the early dust as his Aces (we think) fall to Bad Girl...one down, 96 more to go... I'll get some quotes from the doubled lady momentarily.

i do hope things improve when luton moves premesis.

they had a sattelite for this yesterday with 73 runners and in thier wisdom decided that one member of staff could cope issueing rebuys, absolute joke and you spent more time waiting for chips than actually playing.
then with less than 20 left with 10 tickets avialable they decided to go to 5 minute blinds, again imo a joke.

Here's the nicely-stacked Bad Girl (with new haircut):

The story, then:  She called a preflop raise from Jim Reid with Ac Tc.  Flop:  2c 3c 7c - couldn't be much better, then.  On the flop she just called Jim's 600.
Turn:  3h Now she check-raises from 700 to 1,700, and calls the subsequent re-raise (+2,500) (albeit with some hesitation)...
River:  Td  Now Jim moves in, and call - her Ace flush took it down, and Jim just mucked his hand and went off home.  She says, "I think it might be bad play/call, but I gamble..."

Sid Harris is OUT -

Saw him standing up and putting his coat on so rushed over like the vulture I am:  He held Kh 9h against 6s 6d -
The board:  Aspades 6c Kc Kc and another unimportant card.

Pic attached for reference.

He's likely to get chips or a bus home quickly, with about an equal chance of each, so be quick!

Thanks

i never questioned the efforts of the remaining staff more a management gripe.
it doesnt take a rocket science to foresee that the last satallite before the main event would be busy and should have staffed accordingly, if that means recruiting staff from other grosvenors then this should of happened.

:hello:  hi kids. wrt Luton cardroom, it is being poorly managed at the mo. Never enough staff, crappy structures etc.

But with Tightend in the player committee and a new cardroom coming up, things can only get better.

No reason, just getting a bit bored on the rail, so someone to banter with would be appreciated.

No Elimination Blackjack tournaments?

Odd hand, as reported by Dan Samson, involving Ryan Fronda and directly-left-neighbour Paul Higgins:

Ryan raised to 300 preflop, call from Paul.  Flop brought Td 3c 5s.  Ryan checked, Paul bet 800, call.
Turn:  Tc  Ryan checked, Paul bet 1,200, call.
River:  Jh  Ryan now bets out 1,500, gets re-raised a further 2,000 and flat calls.

Although speculation is that Paul Higgins was betting a house of Threes, the flat call on the river was pretty unfathomable, as Ryan held Th Js for the second nuts...

I cede the floor to Michael McCool, who "ran this great bluff against this Scandinavian, Norwegian played against his mate the other day..."  And here it is, in abbreviated form:  Totally blanked out when the preflop action was being described.  Flop:  Qs 4s 7d.  Matey checked, he bet 300, called.
Turn:  5h.  Matey checks, McCool bets 600, call.
River:  A spade (scare card and a half).  Matey now bets out 1,600, but Michael raises another 3k and gets his opponent to lay down his set of Queens.

And then shows him 2h 3h.

"And then he totally went on tilt..."

You misunderstand (or you're winding me up) - "a spade" is not the same as Ace of spades.  And if I were to type in Aspades, that would happen.   :)

James Browning is Out he ran into a big stacked Ali Mallu.

With blinds at 50-100, Browning, playing a stack of 9300 raised it up to 500 with  Ad Ks. He was promptly re-popped by Mallu (who had him covered) to 2,975.

"I thought Mallu was capable of doing this with a wide range of hands," said Browning. "But i didn't think he'd make that move with aces or kings as he's got position on me and would want to milk me for more chips."

So Browning moved all-in and was called by Mallu holding  Qh Qc and the board bricked out sending Browning to the rail.

How is it a great bluff? He has a st8.....

You misunderstand (or you're winding me up) - "a spade" is not the same as Ace of spades.  And if I were to type in Aspades, that would happen.   :)

Sorry i misunderstood.

If i wanted to wind you up i will do a lot better than that!

Now can i please have the chip counts for everyone whose last name is 6 letters long, ty.

So, recently out is Malc-M - which is a shame as he seemed to be enjoying 'chatting' with tablemate Paul Moss.
Malcolm, "Ruling, please!"
Paul, "Can we have Malcolm F-off back to London?"
pause
Malcolm, "Ruling, please!  Put on blonde - Fatmarra gets his chat banned."

But Malcolm is now railing, after he made his final raise (shortstacked) on the button with the perfectly nice Th 9h.  Jeff Kimber called with his Ac 8c, and the rest went in on the Ten-high, two clubs flop, as you may expect.

I arrived at table Womble to find him mid-dwell, on the river, over a board of 5d 4h Qc 2h 6h.  David Colton in the big blind had just bet into the 8k pot (either 5,000 or all-in, either way it's basically Womble's tournament on the line).  After five minutes (at least), Womble decides to pass, and is rewarded with being shown the Aspades Jh Ace-high bluff.  Which he was beating - but it must have been very marginal - he said, "I'd either look like a genius or an idiot.  Turns out it was genius..."

There seem to be quite a few still doing well - I'll try to do a quick scour of the room for their chips.  One of your guys sadly didn't make it even as far as playing a hand (and he'd come all the way from Ireland) as he arrived after the first hand had been dealt.  I've said it before and I'll say it again:  That's just silly.

Table Grech

Joe Grech 3,275
Bill Davies 19,650
Mark Lane 34,200
Srogd Gyensland 8,625
Bhupindar Kholi 18,575
Trevor Addeley 11,275
Chris Hyton 17,250
Paul Webb 14,325
Michele Dargenio OUT
Om Aggarwal 9K

I caught Michele Dargenio's exit hand, he was in the big blind with a stack of 3,200. There was a raise to 800 by Gyensland, which was called by Hyton. Dargenio then pushed all-in, Gyensland folded but Hyton made the call.

Dargenio flipped  Aspades 6d, whilst Hyton tabled  9c 9d. the board came  5c 7s 7h 2h 3s and was no help for Dargenio

Here's Stuart Rutter, who just described the hand "which has thrown me the most tonight..."  He raised with Ac Qs, one caller.  Flop brought A K 9, he bet around the pot, call.  The turn brought a most likely irrelevant 4, which he bet at 1,800.  He then got just what he didn't want, a 6k re-raise all in.  He spent a while wondering if he was being bluffed (there were two clubs on board), then decided that his opponent was confident, and passed.  He was shown the victorious, if dominated A 10, which was apparently not seen as a hand which needed to bluff to win...

He's down to under 7,000 now, it looks like.

Willie Tann is out.

I arrived at the table whilst Willie (first to act) was contemplating his action on a  Js 5d Qc Qh Tc board. The pot was c.4k and Willie with a stack of c.9.5k bet out for 3.5k. Trevor Reardon after a dwell, re-raised for an additional 7k, enough to set Willie all-in. After a brief dwell and a shrug of the shoulders Willie made the call. Reardon showed  Qd Jd and Tann mucked his cards.

Here's your guy (I think Dino's brought you the chip count) - he just won about 6k off Bhups Kholi holding Ad 2h... I caught it from when they both checked the turn, with the board:  3s 6h 4d 3d.  The river brought the 5s, and a bet of 1,400 (just all the smaller chips in Bill's stack, leaving him just one 5k chip behind).  He was called and showed the rivered straight, which was good.

Chip boss Driton Maxihaj and Ryan Fronda tangle in a pot. Fronda raises it to 1600 pre flop (blinds 200-400) and Maxiihaj smooth calls from the small blind. Flop comes  7c 4s Js - Maxiihaj (sounds like a cough remedy?) checks to Fronda who tosses three 1k pink chips into the middle. Driton thinks for a while takes a look at his cards (surely a sign he's going to fold) and mucks flashing  Ad Kd to the table, as he does and says, "I was going to re-raise you pre." Fronda, fittingly for this time of year shows  8s 8c

Steve Vladar is out and as there is a Mr Cool shaped person sitting in the seat which Stu Rutter had been occupying we must assume he is also on the rail.

We are down to six tables with blinds a 200-400 and 960,000 chips in play the average stack is 16,000. Sitting pretty with 30,000 is Lord Wernick who informed me of his chip count whilst on one of his frequent ciggerette breaks.

Simon Trumper, who is playing a stack of around 7.5k, is studiously taking notes on a piece of paper whenever anything 'interesting' occurs at the table. David Williams once did this to great effect in a WPT event, he ended up finishing 2nd to Negreanu on that occasion.

He saw a flop with Jim Mcshane - it was Qs 8d Jh... it went in on said flop (Paul only had around 5k, I think) and when Jim said, "You got Jacks?" it became apparent that Paul's Ks Kd was going to be no good... he was up against 8h 8d for the set.
Turn:  Ad  ("TEN" says Paul)
River:  2c   and we're losing players thick and fast at the moment.

A couple of counts - the players are now hopelessly intermingled, so we're having to do a player database swap (involving trying to read our own scrawled descriptions of players in their original seats - "Does that say 'fat, blue stripes' or 'hat and glasses?' etc.)...

Matt Cartwright      16,000
Justin Turner          10,700
Jim McShane           20,500
Tracey Dell             30,600  ** see below story
James McBride        25,400
Andreas Demetriou  8,100
Jeff Kimber               OUT (or moved)
Trevor Reardon       35,000
Jeff Buffenbarger      OUT  ("I never got out of the box...")

So - I see Tracey's moved in for 12,300 into a pot of around 15k on the flop:  8d 4d Td.  So I run over and hover.  Jim McShane, who'd checked to her, had to think about it...but he eventually passed.  She showed him (rather overgenerously, in my opinion) the nuts:  Ad Jd... And with that pot as they look set to break table 6 she has a pretty comfortable stack for the 300/600 level.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO OUCH:

A raising war pre-flop between a shortstacked (6k) Martino Libertini and Ashely Hayleys sees it all end up in the middle pre-flop.

Libertini tables  Ac 9d whilst Hayles shows  Jd Jc the flop comes  2c Kd Qs, the turn a Kc and the river a zomg pokerstars-esque  Qh

Libertino sheepishly cancelled his taxi and sat back down.

Ali Mallu            38,000 (?)  Someone told me somewhere in his messy stacks there lurked a total around 50k but I can't see it...
Michael McCool   20,800
Andrew Douglas  19,200
David Colton         6,300
Dan Samson        40,000
Mark Harris          22,300

Ian Woodley - 8k
Giovanni Vaccorella 18.2k
Michael Clements - 15k
Ashley Hayles - 28k
Mickey Wernick - 42k

As a aside Mickey says he can finish 2nd in the European Rankings for 2006 if he wins this event and finishes ahead of Marc Goodwin. European Number 1 Ash Hussain is currently playing in a £3,000 event in Paris and Mickey says, "There's 50 left and he's got good chips.

Chris Eddleman is in contention for the chip leader spot too, with 42,000... but no one has really broken away from the field accumulating a ridiculous stack at this point.  And it's pretty late - this level they're just starting now, 400/800 may well be the last.

He's holding steady at around the 45k mark.

There are 48 players reamaining. Blinds have just risen to 400-800. With 960,000 chips in play that makes the average stack 20,000 and the average M (for those that like that sort of thing) 16.6.

That guy in the first pic was the one that spent close on £300 in a £25 rebuy sat - the main reason I got 17000 at add on stage, then proceeded to blow £500 in the cash game very quickly.

Super aggressive and doesnt like putting a hand down.

Dan has my vote, cool calm and collective.

Two out in two hands at Mickey's table, but Lord Wernick was not involved.

On the first hand a short stacked Paul Higgins pushes in for 1k with  6c 6s, Dave Knight flat calls from the small blind and Ian Woodley pushed all-in from the big blind. Knight insta-called with  Ad Jh. Woodley was in front with  Ks Kc. However the dreaded ace appeared on the flop of  Qh Ac 3d and the  7s Qs that fell on 4th and 5th street meant that Higgins was out and Woodley was left with just 400...

which went in on the next hand as he was in the small blind.

Knight, his nemesis from the last hand, raised to 2000 from the button and the big blind folded. Kinght had  Ac 8c whilst Woodley had  2c Qd, an  Ad in the door on the flop saw Woodley walking.

Woodley unlucky again - that man has had it bad just lately. I was at the same table in Brighton main event earlier this year where he was all in preflop, with an all in nfront of him, I was next to speak with AK and passed. Woodley had AA and the initial all in had KK. The case K fell on the flop.

Double up for Bad Girl courtesy of Driton...

He limped on the button, and it was heads up as she checked in the dark.
Flop:  9c 4s 8d.  Xuyen checked, he bet a bit, she pushed in straight away for around 7k more (after the obligatory, "You made me look...").  Call.
She showed:  9h Tc
He showed:  Ad 8c  and was frowning somewhat as the turn and river came Ts Jd to take a chunk off his stack.

Going into the final twenty minutes of play tonight, and we're scanning the room for a candidate worthy of Climber of the Day.  Bad Girl doesn't count as she had more chips in the first level, and while Marc Goodwin's 7,900 is more like 20k now that's still nothing on his earlier performances.  We are tentatively going towards Martino Libertini, who got that dramatic double-pair thing with his Ace to stay in the tournament.  If he's still in after these 18 minutes, now, he'll most likely get it.

In the closing minutes, Dan Samson loses a pot which could have secured him that coveted Leader spot - Matey raised to 3,500 preflop (holding around 16k) - Dan re-raised 6,000 with his Ahrt Qh, and then Matey moved in - Dan couldn't pass and found himself against 4d 4c.  Which held up.  He related this tale to me while overcoming the late night frustration in the smoking alcove.  It's probably good they're stopping soon as he'll find his 37,000 isn't as pitiful as he reckons right now when he returns tomorrow.`
