Hmm, I just finished the Preview of today's play, quite pleased with it, "painted little pictures" of the main players, then lost the ****** lot....

OK, start again. Sigh......

Well our Chip Leader is a guy called Dave Shallow. Not a familiar face on the circuit, but makes a good living playing online, & is a genuine contender. He played the WSOP last year, but his stock in trade is internet play. Got a dream double up yesterday with AK v AQ, very nice!

Then we have William Hill's Julian Thew, who don't need much by way of introduction. We are in the same hotel (but not room, he snores for England...) - we drove down together in fact - & we had a good chat this morning about how he intends to play today. He has been, by his standards, quiet since January, when he cleared 50k+ at Luton & Copenhagen. He has made a few tinsy winsy changes to his game to improve it - heaven help the rest of us - and is VERY focused. He ain't interested in second, either, he's here to win this thing.

Ben Grundy sat fairly quietly most of yesterday, then doubled up late via AK v KQ, now THATS form, eh? AK v KQ, how nice is that? So he is in great shape now, but I fancy he won't be "grinding" today, as he was forced to do in Monte Carlo. When Ben has chips, he "plays", so look out for a strong showing from the diminutive Ben.

And Mick "The Clock" Cook. Mick can give the impression at the table that he is stand-offish, but that's not the case at all. He just sits there, hardly says a word, "economical with words", seems bored in fact, but his eyes are everywhere, & not much goes off that he don't spot. He was cruising along yesterday with about 10k, just solid, sensible play, when he suddenly trebled up. I had bluffed off most of my stack, & was down to the felt with 2k, but scrabbled back to 5k, when I got a bit over-optimistic with 5-5. Geezer behind me comes in with A-9, then Micky joins the party with KK. You just can't get these guys to lay down KK, can you, wassamatter with them? The A did fall, but Micky hit his set, bingo, treble up.So Micky then settled back into watching & waiting. He has never slow-rolled or given a  rubdown in his life, & is a steely old pro. He has more experience than all the rest put together, & he'll need to get unlucky not to go close today. He has won oodles of big comps, though he's probably more of an Omaha man than Hold 'Em, but watch out for Mick today.

More soon......

Hi mate....pass my good wishes to Julian for me please. What a great play he made last night with 5.6....  It was nearly as good as the J2.....

Rokesh Chablani is an interesting character. He has 22k. He's Operations Manager for VC Poker - wow, he'd LOVe to win the Coral Comp, eh?! Nice guy, too, introduced himself to me this morning, & is a good buddy of Jon Shoreman who, I understand, suggested Rokesh come & say Hi to me. Lovely guy, but I don't know anything about his game.

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 02:52:38 PM

Irish Denis.

It was 6-4, not 6-5, that Thewy made his play with yesterday. And it was  Q-2, not J-2, that he got so lucky against me with in the cash game. You seem to have a very poor grasp of the game Denis - what on earth would Julian be doing in the pot with 6-5 or J-2?

Any more of this & you'll be yellow-carded.

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 03:00:28 PM

Play is due to start in 5 mins, & all the players are nervously pacing around, but nobody is sat down yet. The chips are all stacked on the two tables. I will try & see what the new table draw is in a bit.

OK, the "take your seats" call has just been made.....

You see Tikay you have failed to notice my recovery method. When you experience situations of such magnitude sometimes the only cure is to erase it from your memory. I seem to be able to do this by making small changes to the cards each time I think of them. Eventually I will have a vision of you with AA and that rogue Julian getting very lucky..(as opposed to outplaying you)....You on the other hand seem to be one of the unlucky ones. With your perfect memory you will remain traumatised for life. The future is not good and you could some day end up wearing one of those nice back to front jackets, surrounded by Jack the ripper types.
Now say after me "I shall not play 10.2...J.2...Q.2 or any other combination again.

Denis ???

Wow, man out first hand! Short stacked Mike (Tse?) got it in with 55 & was done over by A-9. Fancy moving in with 55, eh? (Ahem....).

They have announced that everyone who came back today (well, 11th to 20th) will get 200, taken off the top & second prize I believe.

The table draw?

Of the 4 deep stacks, three have ended up on one table. Mick Cook, Ben Grundy, & Dave Swallow are all eyeing each other warily.

The other one has drawn the table full of Billy Low Stacks. That Thewy is soooo lucky, eh? I pray for those poor Low Stacks if Yoyo starts ducking & diving.
He promised me he would sit quiet for the first few hours today. He just got caught nicking & had to let his hand go after trying to steal it with a 10k bet. Some notice he takes of MY advice, eh?

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 03:29:03 PM

Another man gone, Paul Murrell. Paul had 4-4, Mick Cook had AA.

Dave Shallow lost some 25k when his AJ was outpipped by Mick Dunleavy's AQ. Dunleavy doubled up.

Thewy down to 40k, he just caught a guy at it, Matey Boy had 3-7 & moved in, Thewy read him for weak & called with A-J, first card 3......

Ben Grundy just lost a "race" with JJ v AK & has taken a hit too.

So of the 4 chip leaders, 3 have run into strong head winds, whilst Micky Cook is sailing serenely onwards with a following wind.

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 03:33:27 PM

Carnage here. Stuart Forsyth is OUT, his QJ not improving against A-8.

And James Browning took a big hit when his AK failed to hit against QQ, in fact the PP hit a  set.

Blinds are now 1,500-3,000, & the crisis is deepening for the low stacks.

there's a time and a place to discuss filth, not sure this is it

his plan was to attack early wasn't it, obviously paid off. Bet he's sitting quiet as a mouse at the moment tho'  ;)

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 03:51:54 PM
All going wrong for the deep stacks. Dave Swallow loses another pot with 99 against KK held by Cemal "Jimmy" Alp.

Ben Grundy, Milky Bar Kid, has been moved to Thewy's table.

Tom Sambrook is making good headway, he is up to about 40k. I think he's the "Poker Night Live" geezer.

And poor Rokesh is out, he had TT v A-5, & the A-5 merchant hit a house.

Rolandinho is assisting blonde with the updates, thanks fella, very much appreciated.

Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 04:00:20 PM
Wow, SENSATION here, Julian Thew is OUT!

He had AK v TT, first card K, but then it all went wrong, board came K-Q-J-9-x.

So the overnight favourite is on his way home. Poor lad looks gutted, but ever the gent at the table, he shook the winner's hand, "nice hand Sir" & off he went. The victor was Hugh Kirtin.

Tony Jarman just moved all in for 16K with QJ of hearts.

Mick Dubleavy called.

The flop came K,K,10, 7, 4 Putting Tony out of the comp.

Tony can you tell me what the play was on Julian's hand. Pre flop I assume it all went in. Otherwise how could 10 10 call with that flop.

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 04:44:55 PM
Overnight Chip Leader Dave Swallow is OUT.

So that's both the overnight leaders gone, & they were well clear of the field.

Sensational stuff, this is proving to be a real afternoon of upsets.....

Title: Re: The Coral-Gutshot Main Event - Final Day
Post by: tikay on April 10, 2005, 04:48:20 PM

Denis,

Yes, it all went in before the flop. Thewy wondered afterwards if it may have been better to just call the 10k R pre-flop then move in post flop, but easy to be wise afterwards....

But the earlier AJ v 7-3 was a jaw-dropper. Thewy R'd 6k  in the SB with A-J, the BB only had 13k & moved in, he must have known Thewy could not pass for another 7k. On their backs, Thewy AJ, Matey Boy 7-3. Work THAT one out!

Thanks for the support on here. There have been a lot of outdraws today. I was on the wrong end with my AK no good against AJ, and of course my exit hand Tikay has mentioned. However, that pales into insignificance against the two overnight chipleaders, who couldn't make a hand stand up for love nor money.

Got to say it was a pleasure to sit next to Julian Thew for most of last night, tremendous player and one of the real good guys at the table. His call against Koresh in a huge pot that Tikay detailed last night was absolute class.

James Browning? Going nicely. He is  in Seat 1, nice & quiet, enough chips, just waiting for his moment.....

The Latif you refer to - is that Maniac Latif, from Newcastle?

Management have decided to delay the buffet planned for 6pm & play the comp through to the finish. With these blinds, what you reckon, 8pm, 8.30? 10 mins left at 4.5k-9k, then 6k-12k.

All gone a bit quiet now, but I fancy it will all go off shortly.....

Good luck to everyone left in. I'm predicting a Milkybarkid, Mick "The Clock" 1/2.

I'm currently cruising along in this Hills added $50k tournament but i'll check back later.

See you all in Luton next week.

Now Mats Gravisan busts out, James Browning busts him.

Neither had much of a hand, 9-5 v T-7 - two MONSTERS! James, with the bigger (??) hand actually caught his straight, so 6 left now, & the cream rising to the top......

Six left, & the pain increases for the short stacks with a blinds increase in 5 mins.

The momentum is swaying every which way. The chips currently seeem to reside with Mick Cook, James Browning & Cemal Alp. Ben has reached he "slider" stage - moving in with any A.

They are on a short break now, just 5 mins, so let's see if we can get some chip counts.

Ben tells me he has 70k.

Tom Sambrook 53k

Ben Grundy 70k

Hugh Kirtin 70k

James Browning 124k

Cemal Alp 136k

Mick "The Clock" Cook 233.5k

And a reminder that Blinds are now 6k-12k for next 45 minutes. Will it last that long?

Which Casino in Newcastle? Stanley's, first Tuesday of every month, 100 rebuyfest. Terrific bunch of maniacs & at it merchants.

And Riverdave Penly v Latif? That'd be real 7-3 v 8-2 stuff, both of them only need a bag of spanners to go to war with.

but had to sit with julain on my table all night and he was chip leader after 30mins lol

nice reporting tikay, doing a good job as allways

how is rakesh the vc host doing btw?

James Browning & Hugh Kirtin just got together with AK suited v A6.

Board included KQTJx, so that's a split pot.

But this is doomed to end soon, it's all-in or nothing time.

Mick Cook, meanwhile, with his chip lead, is sitting & watching these guys cut each other's throats, dreaming of that lovely ladder............

Man overboard in a real this way & that rollercoaster jobbie!

Hugh Kirtin had TT, Cemal Alp had JJ, but a T flopped, so it looked like Hugh had survived - until Cemal four flushed it...

Oucharoonee!

Hugh Kirtin OUT

Now Tom Sambrook is OUT, he took his chance with 44, but Killer Cemal caught his flush with a card to spare. Hugh out 4th.

So it's Ben The Milky Bar Kid Grundy, James The Geordie Browning, Cemal "Jimmy" Alp, & Mick The Clock Cook.

And a CORRECTION - Hugh was out FIFTH, not FOURTH, as I reported.

What a bizarre game this poker is.

Ben Grundy is TOTALLY dominated with Q-T v Mick Cook's Q-J, but a board that includes J-9-K-x-Q takes the chips for Ben, & Mick Cook can only shake his head in frustration. Ben dobles up - BIG smile from Ben......

He seems destined to do well at Gutshot- yesterday he caught QUADS!

I am only 6 foot from the Final Table, but it's hellish crowded here, plenty of railbirds, so it's tough to see the action, but easy to hear the oohs & aahs.......

But a lovely atmo. Barry Martin has the microphone & is calling the hands, & there is a good spirit between the players, though poor Micky Cook still looks a bit dumbfounded as to how Ben Grundy slipped off the hook.

James Browning OUT 4th.

Blinds now 6k-12k. Jimmy Alp has about 350k, Mick Cook has 260k, & Ben about 170k, all approx.

"Business" is being discussed now. They seem to have redistributed the prize money for 1st 2nd & 3rd & are playing on, but they are insisting it is NOT a deal, they are still playing for the trophy, comp, & ranking points.....

OK, Ben tells me the "business" was......

He and Mick Cook give Jimmy 20% of their winnings, (if they finished first) & Jimmy gives Mick & Ben 10% of HIS winnings if HE wins it.

And no, it makes NO sense to me either.

But an intersting point, is this a "deal" or not?

Perhaps PokerInEurope's Jon Shoreman can advise, he may even end up being asked to "rule".

Still almost impossible to see the action, there are scores of railbirds, but Mick Cook has seized the initiative & has some 450k, with Cemal Alp on about (note that word Red!) 230k.

Guess it will all come down to a couple of all-ins.......

Oh dear, things are turning a bit nasty now.

The "arrangement" was agreed when Jimmy was big chip leader, but now Mick is in charge, & there seems to be some misunderstanding as to how they stand.

Barryy Martin has been asked to clarify what was agreed, but he won't, quite rightly, he says it's between the two guys.

And the two guys are getting VERY ratty with each other now, Mick asking the railbirds to confirm what he thinks was agreed. More raised voices.

Oh deary deary me...........

The deal appears to have been some sort of "saver", based on 10%-10%-20%, between the two lowest stacks & the chip leader as WAS at the time.

But the difference of opinion seemed to revolve around "10%/20% of WHAT"? 10% or 20% of the TOTAL prize money, or those same %'s on the difference between, say, 1st & 2nd.

Glad I don't have to sort THAT out.....

But all parties are adamant it was NOT "business" in the sense of a "deal"........

Point taken Junior, but we need to be careful here.

I have nothing to do with how this is "ruled", that is Jon's problem, & I don't envy him. But for the sake of fairness, I AM obliged to report the truth as I understand it.

At Luton, I reported the deal - which nobody else did - and it cost Julian a sack load of Ranking Points - quite correctly, too. It just needs to be "policed" all season, to ensure that these guys are on a level playing field.

blonde will report what they see & hear when at Ranking Tornaments, end of story. Jon has to sort out the rest.

Train Journey? That was the REWARD!

Remind me to lend you my "Great Western Steam in the 50's" Video. Excellent stuff, unforgettable. But don't watch it in bed, it tends to get me a bit worked up whenever I see it.

thanks for the good luck messages

In regards to any deal it was between the first three.... but we essentially swapped percentages in each other. Jimmy and Mick said that this meant that the ranking points wouldn't be affected.

It was just that whoever finished higher had to give a percentage of the difference to the other two. So i got 10% of the difference betwen me and Mick and Jimmy got 20% of the difference between him and Mick as he had double our chips when the percentages were agreed. Me and Jimmy didn't give each other anything.....

Confused? We all were...........

Thanks for keeping them up to date on my progress Tikay!

Well, dealing with Ironside first, we sure did miss you fella. blonde Live Updates are not the same without Ironside stoking the fires, & giving us his startlingly awful predictions. I have not had time to read about his Aberdeen heroics yet, but I will tomorrow. You are excused on this occasion Ironside - don't let it happen again.

Ben Grundy's family? Is that the Dad that does not recognize his son.......?

As to the "saver", Jon has given his ruling based upon what we reported, case closed. If anyone is unhappy about that, they should conact Jon.

And kpnuts won the William Hill comp - nice one!
