Title: Which game?
Post by: witney on April 18, 2007, 06:41:59 AM
I'm a new player to poker, and have fallen for it! You remember the feeling, the quickening of the pulse and flush you felt when you had your first win. Anyway, I've been playing now for a couple of weeks, and been in different types of online play. I've played sit n go's, a few 45 person, and 90 person tourneys, and one large one. I've also played a few head's up games, love them! My question is....is the the right type of variance for beginner play? What would you suggest? I'm having lots of fun, but I do want to continue to progress, learn and get better at playing.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I appreciate any help.

Yes I think you are doing the right thing.  When I started online there was only limit poker, but nowadays there is much more variety so it makes sense to try out the different forms of poker and hopefully find the one you like best.

I'd suggest low-limit SNGs so you get a (cheap) feel for what works and what doesn't, and how the game in general works. I'd very much suggest not playing no limit cash (except maybe at the very very lowest levels) until you've got quite a bit of experience.

Id recommend buying a few books, doing your homework and then dabbling. I think $2- $5 9 seater Sit and go's are probably your best bet. Small enough to not worry about the stakes and play against weak (not mental though) opposition whilst still worth winning.

Play whatever you enjoy most and make the most from.

They dont correlate, at least for me. I make the most from fixed limit, but i enjoy PLO the most. And i log more hours playing NL than anything else. Hmmmmmmmmm..............time for a change methinks.
