Title: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 11:17:14 AM
Hi there and welcome back to beautiful Baden where the final eight of the EPT event here are just about to take their seats.  Well, they're just about to be fitted for mics, led to the TV Room and fussed over for 20 minutes...  But close enough!  When the action starts, we'll be here to tell you what it is.  And that's me and Guest Star Mr. Julian Thew, filling in for the quadruply busy Tikay.  So with him packed and off to the airport, the unlimited joys of the free food and sunny terraces are ours to enjoy.  In the breaks.

Well, Abel is chip leader at this point (I saw him being kitted out by Pokerstars own Conrad in a fetching black PS T-shirt in the hallway five minutes ago).

Sorry nun hehe- Oh, I hear applause so down into the dark basement area I go, away from sun and food.  They are introducing the players, but you know who they are already...

I will try to get some final Photos if I can get near enough, in case you can't put names to (mostly young, Scandinavian) faces.

No, sorry - I caught him saying the man equivalent of 'does my bum look big in this?' - I think the televising makes them all a bit fussier with their appearance.

It's been a fairly wary start with the blinds at 3,000 - 6,000 500 ante.

One big pot Julian spotted involved Patrik and Ingemar who both limped to see a flop of A 6 9.  Patrik bet out 12k, was minimum raised by Ingemar, and called, only to disappear faced with Ingemar's bet on the King turn card.

First all-in situation - Edgar Skjevold makes it 20k to go (bigger than usual).  Christian Grundtvig re-raises to 45k, Edgar moved all-in with AK suited, Christian called with an offsuit AK.  Chop chop.

Hi Karabiner - congrats... it's just non-stop tournament action with the blondeites.

Patrik is from Sweden, but I only know he's not Norwegian as the little hotel lobby sit'n'gos we staged last night ('tax reasons' prevented us from doing so here) featured Team Norsemen manager Woody, who told us all about the Norwegian effort here.  2 Team members and another Norway guy on the final is not bad at all...

'Confident-looking' Patrik Antonius at the end of the table.  He's actually from FINLAND.  Very sorry for all that confusion...

Edgar Skjervold OUT - (Thanks to Julian who witnessed it all first hand while I was fiddling with the camera)

Firstly, he took on his compatriot Torstein, who raised.  Edgar's hood went up as he called (so you could tell them apart from a distance).  They checked the K-high flop, Torstein led out on fourth street and took that pot.

Then, after Patrik raised on the button, Torstein called from the small blind and Edgar moved all-in on the big blind.  With Edgar still shortest in chips, Patrik called with JJ and found Edgar with AQ.  No improvement means that part of Team Norsemen is our 8th place finisher, making €20,520.

afternoon all,
well i failed to get home today, BA insisting that 900euro was the cheapest seat they had, so here i am stuck for one more day.
One more day having to endure a free bar & sumptuous food, what rotten luck.
The fillet steaks are great but really any more than 3 in one day just isn't good for the old bowel movements.
Today i breakfasted with Jen, two lattes & a light omlette. Bucks fizz is a nice way to greet the afternoon & they are now laying out a selection of nibbles with everything from smoked salmon to ham & eggs.
That'll do for a while but then it's probably time to fit in the first steak of the day & i'm hoping to stumble across the lovely little bowls of gnocchi that were available last night.
Back to the poker i think we have some chip counts, the last 7 are on a break.
Sunglass ratio was 1 in 4, that's gone up slightly now that edgar has gone.
1. g.osterbrod 217k
2. p.antonius 350k
3. t.iverssen 264k
5. p.muhlbeck 111k
6. i.backman 338k
7. c.grundtvik 202k
8. a.meijberg 314
i fancy torsten iverson to get heads up, he looks unfazed & comfortable & prob has the most experience.
patrick exudes confidence, i gather he's a right at-it merchant, me looking forward to seeing some fireworks

Next year Mr Gamblor, next year...

As for this year's final, there have been no real fireworks as such, but I noted the hands anyway.  Patrik Antonius, after a very confident start, has been having a slightly harder time of it.  He was in a three way pot with Ingemar Backman and Gunnar Osterbrod, seeing a flop of  qd kh 3c.  When it was checked to him on the  6d turn, Patrik bet 30k and was called by Ingemar.  The river paired the board with the  qc, and they checked it down, Ingemar taking the pot with two pair, Qs and sixes.

Then Patrick passed to Abel Meijberg's preflop re-raise giving him the benefit of the doubt and 24,000.

Title: Re: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 01:30:30 PM
Then it was young Gunnar Osterbrod's turn to get busy, re-raising Ingemar Backman's preflop bet of 27k to 70k from the big blind, and immediately pushing all-in when the flop came down  qs 6s 6c.  He proceeded to take the next hand, too, with a big raise from the small blind.  So it looked like no one was going to try nicking those blinds any time soon.

However, all that hard work was undone when he got involved with Christian Grundtvig on a board which showed  qd kc 6c 6d.  Betting 50k, he found Christian's check-raise all-in just too much to call and was back to where he started.  Just to rub it in, Patrick took the next pot from him on the turn as well.

Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 01:38:27 PM
Peter Muhlbeck just doubled up to around 250k - the lone Austrian played a sneaky pair of Queens in this fashion:

Patrik  limps on the button - Peter makes up the small blind and the big blind checks.  On a 2 3 10 flop, Peter led out 15k, call from Ingemar on his left, and Patrik raised to 60k on the button.  When Peter re-raised all-in for 110,000 total, Patrik felt obliged to call with his J 10 and found Peter Muhlbeck with those Queens.

Torstein Iversen OUT in 7th - takes €27,360

We have a TV screen set up in the press room (one floor up from where the actual action is) and so we can see when someone is standing up and walking away, but there's no sound, so the detail has to be reported from ringside.  So we know that fellow Norwegian Gunnar Osterbrod just eliminated Torstein, but not how.

Title: Re: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 01:52:49 PM
torstein is eliminated in 7th spot for 27k.
he got all his chips in with 66 on a 2s,4s,5 flop but couldn't dodge gunnar's 10-6s flush draw that hit on the river

Title: Re: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 01:58:18 PM
& now peter goes out in 6th spot for 34k.
he moved in on the turn, on a king high board with K-Q but able had trapped him two red aces.
ouch

The money went in when the board looked like this: 8d ks 4d 6s, and the  5s meant little as Peter Muhlbeck headed off.

Attached is pic of Abel Meijberg, who has more chips now.

Christian Grundtvig 133,000
Ingemar Backman  381,000
Patrik Antonius      212,000
Abel Meijberg        608,000

I just spoke with Abel on the phone, and he feels pretty confident now, especially since he really doesn't have anything to lose...
And with four different scandinavian nationalities up against him, he doesn't have to worry anymore that any of them might be playing together.

Title: Re: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 03:45:44 PM
Well, now Abel is in even better shape having eliminated Ingemar Backman in 5th place!

Ingemar limped preflop, and when Abel raised to 20,000 on the button, he pushed all-in when it got back to him for a whopping 329,000.  Surprise of the day when Abel Meijberg called him with  jh js.  Ingemar showed  ah kh and they raced for the nearly 700k pot:

The board:  5s 7s 4d qd 6h

And Mr. Backman receives the fifth place prize of €41,040.

Pic of Ingemar as he took a seat to watch the final four (after coming to the corner where Jonathan of Gutshot and I were sitting so we get our moment on TV congratulating him!)

Birre, that is thanks to Woody who is sat ringside with his laptop and a slightly dodgy internet connection.  We've worked with him in the past - he's bravely stayed down there after Team Norsemen fell early on.  I am bringing more of a highlight service than a blow-by-blow 'raise from button, fold from blinds' kind of thing.  But we congratulate Rolf on his stamina...

Speaking of highlights, the fourth place finisher is Christian Grundtvig.

In the reverse of the previous knockout hand, when Gunner raised to 68k preflop Christian moved all in with  jh js - it was Gunner with the  ad ks.

The flop brought  asp kc 6c, and there were some more outs for Christian when the turn came  qd, but the river failed to bring the needed 10 or J and the Danish player receives €47,880.

Marcel Luske just wandered over to Patrik Antonius for a bit of a chat (some advice, perhaps?) as they take a break.  I think now might be the time to nab some chip counts.

Title: Re: EPT Baden - FINAL TABLE live update
Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 04:23:45 PM
Gunnar raised on the button, Patrik calls from the small blind - Abel re-raises from the big blind.  Gunnar passes, Patrik moves all-in with 10s, Abel called with AJ.  Missed.

So Patrik Antonius doubles up.

Post by: Djinn on October 06, 2005, 04:28:06 PM
Patrik is actually now chip leader with 869,000
Gunnar Osterbrod  500,000
Abel Meijberg        560,000

I don't think I've previously mentioned the astonishing fact about Patrik's first day - he arrived over FIVE HOURS late (who arrives late eh - don't these people want all their chips?) and arrived with less than half his starting stack.  He was immediately all-in with no hesitation, and he's stormed his way to the final table from there.  He also has a diamond earring.  I'll try to get a picture of it.

Abel Meijberg OUT in 3rd place, taking €61,560!

The 22-year old Dutch player lost his chips over the course of three crowd-exciting hands..

Hand 1: Patrik raises from the big blind to 115,000.  Abel on the button moves all in with the  ac qc, finding Patrik with  asp kh.  The board comes nine high and Abel's previously big stack has been decimated - to around 45,000.

Hand 2: Abel moves all in with  qc 4c (that suit again) and Patrik calls with  ah 8c.  The flop looked bad for Abel, with  6c ac 4h on it, but the turn brought a  4s and the river was the  2d, so he's back in with a shot and over 100k.

Hand 3: Again against Patrik (Gunnar sitting pretty quietly in the corner) Abel shows  ah 2s vs  4s 4d.  There looks like hope as the turn brings three hearts to the board, but it's not to be and Abel headed over to be congratulated by the Dutch and Norwegians alike.  And everyone else.

So we're heads up between chip leader Patrik Antonius (about 1.3million chips) and Gunnar Osterbrod from Norway.  Rolf Woods appeared deep in concentration as he tracks the 24-year-old's progress as he seeks to make a dent in Patrik's chips with his 500,000 or so.  They are seeing quite a few flops, with smallish pots going back and forth.

Gunnar has apparently recently completed an economics degree and is floating about playing online, with great success.  This is his biggest tournament achievement to date, however, I believe, and I am sure his eyes are on the €218,990 first prize (although €120,384 isn't bad).

AHA but Smithy, it's ALL OVER

Patrik Antonius is the champion, taking the €218,990 first prize and a big old trophy!

That makes Gunnar Osterbrod 2nd place finisher for €120,384.

It appears that Patrik raised 50k with a call.  The flop was  4s 7s 8h.  Gunnar checked, Patrik bet 60k, Gunnar moved all in with the brave  qh 9c.
Patrik had  8s 4h for two pair, and with no improvement Patrik won the final pot of the day.

But here's the most fascinating bit of information for you blondeites:

I just got off the phone with Roland de Wolfe (remember him from Paris?) and he told me that he's good mates with Patrik and they agreed in Aruba to cross-book for 50%.  In other words, whatever one of them wins, the other has to pay 50% again!

Now, you might think this was looking a bit bleak for Roland - BUT - earlier on, when Patrik arrived SO late and had so few chips, they spoke and cancelled this one.  Can you believe it??
