Whilst the $25,000 WPT final is being staged this week at the Bellagio, what many of you might not be aware of is the rise in popularity of a masterful game called Keno. Although the average age of the players is 84 and the game is simply a variation of bingo, Keno has become a huge attraction for those in the buffet, especially four members of the media who spotted a keno pad at their table and a screen generating random numbers on the wall.

With four us punting a huge $5 sum into the pot, all four of us adrenalin pumped Keno junkies selected 20 numbers from the 78 available. When we had all completed our sheets, we waited with baited breath for the screen to change, peering at the board intently as if we were awaiting a platform announcement at the train station.

Two thrilling games later (their were two consecutive ties) we had our final, and one which involved my good self and French reporter Benjo. This was not only my first heads up match, but my first final table period (one of many, I hope), and I was up against a wily veteran who had played the game at least once before.

However, with the wind in my face, I forced my way up stream to become the World Keno Tour (WKT) Grand Final Champion for 2007, taking the $20 prizepool down with 6 numbers to four, a near landslide victory. Mike Sexton went mad, saying that I was the youngest ever WKT champion, by a good 50 years.

Here's a picture of me shaking hands with a worthy runner-up in Benjo, the winning hand in my er... hand.

Although he's grinning like a Cheshire Cat, it's actually a crocodile smile, a petualant Benjo losing grace in defeat by suggesting, "You lied about your handicap!"

With this win on my back, I fully intend to be playing the $50,000 K.E.N.O event at this years World Series of Keno. Fingers crossed I add that title to my now long list of (one) accolades.

The small dog, he has but one pair of shoes, and we all know what those are...not exactly compliant for the nightlife... but as he so eloquently recounted, we did play some fourway Keno.  I look forward to seeing Snoopy appearing at the Celebrity Keno Invitational in early May, held in Atlantic City.  There is always the crazy cash action, and, as Benjo says, "The strategies for cash and tournament Keno are subtly different.  You get the young guns, recently retired, with their aggressive play by 'feel' and the analytic style of the older and more experienced live players."

On the table is front of us is Michael Mizrachi, but, more importantly (we're not biased here) across the other side of the felt is the remaining quarter of the Hendon Mob, Mr Joseph Beevers.

Beevers updates should be coming in in their droves with him in touching distance.

You probably won't know this bunch, but the first piccy is of Erik Seidel and Kathy Liebert whilst the one below is of an up and coming player called Johnny Chan (not the kung fu dude)

Of course, we hope to have some European viewers, many of which may be following these two - Mad Mads Andersen who I believed finalled in a WPT earlier in the year and the Eggman himself,Thomas Wahlroos, who informs me that he has a few stalkers on MySpace. I know he has a fan or two on blonde, are you one of his obsessors?

Early News Alert - we have elimination gasping, and well before that of yesterday!  Gene Tyler (we hear, it's a matter of evesdropping until the player list materialises around Level Three).  Matey with 6h 6d caught a nice flop:  Tc Ts 6c, a nicer turn:  6c but the river was his cake-icing - the Jh.  This is what persuaded the First Eliminated to push his whole stack, as he held Jd Jc and rivered that over-house.  I think he's in shock, judging by the erratic walk out the door...

A couple of late stragglers in Umberto Brenes, Erick Sagstrom and Patrik Antonius. Mike Matusow also appears to have made his way in, although he is spending it lying on the sofa, probably trying to rid himself of a hangover. I'm tempted to go put my blanket over him.

Here's a UK accent - Mark Entwistle, who came to our immediate attention by using his seat allocation as a telegram to get news on the Barcelona match.  I swear, people can smell internet access...I could just be editing photos over here, or creating pie charts.  His shirt echoes my early morning sentiments exactly:

Thought we'd check out the top table a little earlier today - it has Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott and Bruno Fitoussi on it, and Umberto-Brenes-moustache-alike on the left of the Devilfish picture.  He's not Brenes, the bottom picture is.

Lucky Praz.  Just look at his seat draw - Erica Schoenberg as neighbour.

Got this about 15 mins ago, while he was in the process of winning this hand:
Mateyboy raises preflop to 300, Praz calls, Daniel Negreanu raises to 1,500 getting 2x call
Flop:  Jh 3d Th   Negreanu bet 5k, Praz called
Turn: 6c  And Praz takes it here with a 10k bet.  He told Snoopy that he had Nines on that one...

And more Praz news following almost immediately...

Not long after taking a pot off Daniel Negreanu (pictured below), Praz doubled up to 115k with the following hand.

Pre-flop action, Praz with J-J, Mateyboy with Nines.

9-4-7 Flop

Jack on Turn

all the chips fly in

Mateyboy eliminated, Praz possible chip leader.

Villlareal 1 - Barca 0

with Barca losing Rickard now has 4 strikers up front - Eto, Gudjonson, Ronaldinio & Messi - 10 mins left.

Coming to the end of the first break now, and maybe time for a few counts?  I warn you, they may all be between 48 and 52k, with the occasional exception such as Praz or quads-vs-house Guy.  Interesting - the announcer just said, "There's one minute left of the break, and also one minute left to buy in to this event."  So you can buy in up until the first break on the second start day - I wonder if the EPT would do this if they had unlimited space...

I said no such thing!  I had blue hair at one point - all for the experimentation.  (Plus Dana has been trying to get Snoopy to go pink for a while, with limited success.  Gavin Griffin's tone would match his shoes almost exactly).

Dusk Till Dawner Michael Greco hides face but then relents, simultaneously cursing his own early luck ("Every time I have Queens, someone hits a flush or straight, same thing if I have Kings...") and wishing team mate Dave Colclough luck in Manchester.  I was going to put the first photo up as a kind of 'Guess the DTD player' interactive thing, but seeing as the only other one here is Kevin O'Connell I thought it might be too easy.

Yes, I repeat, slight misquote (see prev. page).

In Monte Carlo Pokerstars were announcing a kind of match-donate thing on the site where people could transfer money to a made-up account called 'Breast Cancer Awareness' or something.  It was chatted about often on the live commentary feed, and his donating to charity made Gavin an even more popular champ over there.

The Devilfish has found an opponent who's ready to out-chat him in Vinni Vinh.  "You come to the table today, not Devilfish, littlefish."  They clash in one pot while I'm up on stage - Dave says, "Littlefish checks," on a 8s Ks 9h flop.  "Little Vinni bet!" says Vinh, throwing in 1,500, which Dave raises by a further 2,100 with only brief hesitation.
He gets a call and they see the 4d turn.  Devilfish checks, Vinni bets 5,500.  Call.
River:  5d  And it looked like a lightning speed check-Vinnyallin-pass here, which Devilfish was clearly not happy about - to be honest he's usually the one in the inane but entertaining (if you don't have to sit there the whole time) chat driving seat.  "I put you on a big hand," adds Vinni, helpfully, before doing some kind of mini-shadowbox leading me to believe he might be a few crackers short of a barrel.

Thanks to my reliable source, Claus Nielsen of Martins Poker who, incidentally, finalled in this event last year, I have learned that Mark Teltscher is OUT at the hands of Gus Hansen.

Gus raised it up pre-flop under-the-gun and Mark flat called along with three others.

Flop = Jc Tc 9d

Gus bet 2,700, Mark made it 7,500 and Gus moved all-in.

Mark called for his last 25k, but his T-9 was no match for Gus' Ks Qs which survived come the raggy Turn and River.

Mack Lee is OUT.

Mark Newhouse made it 800 pre-flop, Mack Lee re-popped it to 3,200 and Mark called.

Raggy Flop, Mack bet 5k, Mark pushed for 25k and Mack called all-in.

Mack is dominating with Queens versus Jacks, but Mark rivers a third Knave.

Ouch!

So, with the break just coming to an end, there'll be no return of the Mack.  ;whistle;

Can you give us Dutchies some updates on Abel Meijberg (EPT Baden FTist), Steve Wong (WSOP side event FT and well known WPT player) and Sander Foppele (Dutch soap-actor, can you confirm this, he was seated next to Todd Brunson). I have no idea what the table seatings are. :dontask:

looks like a fantastic field ... sat with Praz for 1st 2 hours at Manchester. I am sure he was playing more LAGGY than usual so he could get to this event. GL Praz - unlucky Karl at the GUKPT ... you were running very well

Greg

Thx Greg, absolutely nothing to work with on day 2...can only get so far if the deck isn't co-operating ;o)

Any Bansi related updates Jen/Snoops?

Sorry, no player list as of yet, but on a board of 2-Q-T-7-9, the guy on left called a 14k bet from the chap to his left, taking the pot down with T-7 vs. A-Q.

I really feel like I should know the chap who won the pot, if anyone can name him, please do so.

Tim Phan i think

I recognise him from last year's World Series - that is his name - he was one of the big stacks at some point attracting a lot of press attention, including us.  He seemed a very capable player indeed, and even in a field like this stands a good chance, in my opinion.

Tae Han is OUT.

Board = 8h 3s Kd 7c

Allen Kessler bets 1.4k, Tae Han makes it 11.4k and Kessler calls.

River = 7d

Han announces all-in with Aces, Kessler calls instantly with Eights.

Sander is definitely sitting next to Todd Brunson. He's also got Dewey Tomko on the table.

However, and unfortunately for Dutch fans, Sander's only got 10,325 in chips.

Some updates on jan sjåvik please..

Sorry, been a while, but his table (and another 5) in another area of this monster of a casino... he gave me a count - 75,025 and went back to regarding the table with a mixture of detachment and amusement which is so characteristic.  One of my favourite players - lets add him to my picks from today (surely it resets, right? Three per start day?  The press always get money on this eventually)

Joe Pelton is OUT.

With the blinds at just 100 and 200 with a running ante of 25, he inexplicably (well, in my humble opinion) moved all-in for 20k plus with Ac Qs.

A quick call from Seat 7 with Ad Kh, the 8h Jd Kc brought four extra outs, but to no avail, the Turn coming 3c, River 9c.

Joining Sander Foppele, Todd Brunson and Dewey Tomko is this man, Antonio Esfandiari, who brought his circa 70k stack all the way from the other cardroom.

"So, who's been winning all the money then?" ask the magician.

Could be a fun table to watch!

After a slow start which saw him drop as low as 16k, Michael ''Don't Call Me Beppe' Greco is back up to 45k after "outplaying Erik Seidel".

With Pocket Nines, Michael bet every street of a 6-2-2-9-x board and was paid off each time.

As for Praz - "I'm on tilt," he announces.  I check his stack for signs of smallness.  No, he's still on 106,325 exactly, and looking fairly relaxed.  "My ipod's not working," he continues, "You missed me bluff off a lot.  And then win a pot."  Not life-threatening, then, and anyway, he looks to be enjoying himself immensely.  Plus, "I'm Daniel's doctor," he adds, pointing at Negreanu (also pictured).  "He can't beat me in a pot."  Praz gives a brief, wide, wicked grin and continues to play, pausing only to commiserate with Karl across the pond.

For him to be able to work out how to book his own flight etc is a big enough achievement. One step at a time, i'll teach you how to work an ipod some other time...

Many thanks - here's Abel Meijberg from Room Two.  He has 31,325 and what looks like the world's least exciting chocolate bar in front of him.  Some kind of Special K thing in the most boring packaging imaginable.  Someone get him a Mars Bar or some Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or something fun, for goodness' sake.

Plus, always on the lookout for stacks topping 100k, on Abel's left is sat Bill Ferrand, with 112k or so.  I noticed his stack because of his card protector, a little tortoise (pictured below) which came into view when he moved his arm (exciting action shots of this also below).  He was eager to remove any false suppositions of mine that he might be some kind of professional gambler, handing me a business card and saying, "I am a biologist first, poker player as a hobby!"  Unusual to see this combination of interests, however, saving and studying of species and playing poker for huge buy-ins.

There was a brief debate on the table of doom (currently holding Hansen, Haversen, Brunson, Watkinson & Toto L), after Doyle had bet 700 only for the bet to be ruled as 200 because his 500 chip dropped before the line.

Erick Lingren's call, was them deemed a re-raise and, after the ruling was confirmed by the tournament director, Doyle opted to pass, although he did briefly ask, "Can I re-raise?"

"It's pretty obvious what he was doing," commented the Great Dane.

"This is real poker," exclaims 'The Mouth' Matusow to the rest of the table. "We play the people here, not the cards."

And the reason for the ants in pants moment? Well, with the board reading 2h 5d Ts 8s, Bryan Sumner had bet 15k only for Matusow to ask that oft dreaded question, "How much do you have left". On answering around 20k, Mike quickly replied, "Okay, I'm all-in" to which Sumner instantly folded.

Mike showed the 7h, and then, after a moment, the 5h, which was the calm before the storm in the Matusow celebatory speech.

Just catching upl... you guys are doing a great job as always!!!

I don't suppose you're referring to lil 'ol me here are ya Snoops.  Of course not.  I'm not a stalkier, my love is real.  Please tell Thomas I will always and forever be eternally devoted to... wait what is the definition of stalker?  um... nevermind... ;whistle;

Well, he asked, "What's all this about me being popular online?" or words to that effect...so I made the international sign of the big head, where you place both hands either side of the head and slowly move them apart.  And then took his photo, thereby giving a mixed message of sorts.

Hello there -

To be honest, it slipped my planning stage somewhere in the last five updates - we were originally planning to go to the Paris WPT event but it looks like that may be iffy... everything apart from this here WPT Final Update until the WSOP is going to be a last minute plan for one reason or another, so no for now, but you never know about the last minute adventuring spirit.  It was lots of fun last year.

And two levels on, going back to the Devilfish table, it's like I never left - Vinny Vinh is still talking, "You not Devilfish any more.  You're little fish.  I didn't say you played wrong just there, know what I'm saying?"
Devilfish, despite having risen in chips to 63,225 looks wearier than ever.
"You don't get mad?  What I'm saying?" asks Vinh.
"I'm getting a headache," replies the Devilfish, displaying the 'devil' half of his gold man-jewellery (see picture).
"You wanna go outside?" offers Vinny, in a non-confrontational 'a breath of air would do you good' sort of way.  The Devilfish declines, but gets up the next hand for a little break, cause he wanted to, you understand.

Praz Bansi is NOT out. Far from it in fact as he's running strong with 125,000.

He did say that his phone was dead, which is why he might be ignoring fellow Hit Squad members (I think I stopped a family feud there).

Not much action of late from Praz, although he did mention losing a chunky(ish) pot to Negreanu with J-9 vs. A-Q on a J-9-4 Flop. I think he mumbled something about runner runner flush.

After a short 15 minutes break, the players have returned for what I believe is the last level of the day, and then it's buffet time. Woohoo.  ;sark;

Updates on Jan Sjåvik please.

Snoopy's just gone to Room Two to investigate this...and terrible rumours spread by Karl about Praz having lost to a sick one...

And what did snoopy find out??

Empty seat next to Carlos Mortensen means Phil Laak has gone.

Bad news for hoodie fans.

Consolation for the hoodie fans...  Here are my top Eight still in the competition, first the four runners up 2d - (side quiz, if anyone still awake back home - how many can you name?)

Apoligies for the dark photos, it's due to a ban on flash photography. If anyone knows of a simple way to lighten them up, then please let me know. ta

Sweden's Nester Ygborn is low, but surviving, his last move being an uncontested all-in from the small blind for 10-15k.

Kevin O'Connell (39.5k) and Chip Reese (90k)

Several tables down is fellow Dusk Till Dawner, Michael Greco, who, although earlier said he'd be happy to end the day with 30 or 40k when he'd dropped down to 16k, actually doesn't seem too happy now that he has 41k. Guess that's poker.

The action has slowed down slightly, as you might expect for the end of the day, so I doubt there will be a flurry of exits in this last level. I did notice that Layne Flack's seat is empty, which either means he's popped to the local strip bar or is actually OUT (or probably both).

It's not bad, but I'd say the one at the Rio is the true fatties' heaven.

If your pics open in Microsoft Picture Manager when you double click them then select the 'Picture' menu, then 'Brightness and Contrast', then slide the adjusters up until you like it, then hit save.

Hmm, working from a Mac I'm afraid. I'm sure there's a way.

Edward Moncardo is OUT, his all-in with Tens on a board of Qc-5s-Qs-Js being called by trip fives. Academic 7h on the River.

Double up for Joe Beevers:

Saw the Hendon Mobster involved in a pot on the turn, with the board 3h Qc Kh Ac (I think in that order).  There was then an immensely long, tense period of dwelling, during which Joe and the player opposite him chip riffled and stared like their lives depended on it.  I thought they were heads up and this was on of those two-cats-swishing-tails-on-a-fence situations, but then to my surprise a player in the middle whose cards I hadn't noticed passed to the 4k bet, which was called out of position by John Racener (Hoody winner, I think, unless a new player snuck in early).
The river came the Tc - Joe looked pretty short after the betting up until this point, and his opponent bet out 16k which effectively suggested he pass or go all in.  It was the latter, and his Aspades Ks were good, the Ahrt being shown for what was in all probability a dangerous pair+nutdraw combination which missed the river.

Here's a brighter picture of John Racener, who looks like ending the day as chip leader.

Here's Per Ummer, steadily progressing chipwise, now on 86,200.  The only place I've ever come across the shade of orange his jumper boasts is in the Irn Bru candy bar.  I couldn't find a picture of what they look like unwrapped, but it's just like Per Ummer's jumper.

OK it's set number of hands, then bag'n'tag time...we're going to leg it to get to the buffet queue quickly, but a couple more things first...

Thanks to Pauly for bringing over this Praz hand... where Negreanu finally gets one back :)

Praz button raises to 1,600...Negreanu calls.
Flop:  Th Qh 2h check-check
Turn:  2d  Negreanu  bets 2,000 and Praz calls.
River:  8s  Negreanu bets 7,500 and Praz gives it up...he's shown the Ac Aspades.

As yesterday, there has been a draw for how many hands they're going to play, and the result was "Last three hands!"

At this point, we're going to rush off to the buffer because (1) we're famished and (2) we want to get there before all the players form the world's longest queue.

See you tomorrow for what should be a gripping Day 2 with plenty of big names still left in, not to mention a handful of Brits.

Be sure you join us, we'll do our very best to get the chip counts up before kick off.

Toodle pip
