He cracked Aces with Td 6d in the £100 FO tonight...

Hi Roland,

Beware the new ultra-aggressive tikay. My new strategy is to get my chips in the middle early on - before I fall asleep. Be afraid sonny boy.

Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 11:28:54 AM
Last night, Flushy, Pab (who had just made a 35 hour round trip from Thailand to get here), Jen and I went to play the £100 FO. We were sitting in Flushy's flat preparing at 7pm preparing to go for the 8pm start when Matt Dale (Mango99) suddenly told us the tournament was errr... starting at 7pm, frenzied into action we managed to make it just in time. (It would've have been something tragic for Pab to have made his epic journey only to be denied entry for a £100 FO).

Anyway, whilst in the taxi, Jen was explaining how they'd been late for the start of the previous night, the £250 FO, and Jen had parked her car in a clamping zone so they could run in the casino, play the first hand, then Jen would run out and park the car in a more suitable place. This lead to a discussion as to whether you would've passed Aces the first hand so you could get back to car before it was spotted, and we all kinda agreed it would've been a +ev move to fold the bullets given that her car might have been towed away instead...

In the £100 event itself, Pab lost with a gutshot and flush draw to two pair, Jen went out to some three-outer and Flushy's limp re-raise with A8 didn't work against AT, they all went to a bar round the corner while I tried to compete against the rapidly rising blinds, I ended up raising to 3.6k in the CO (blinds 600/1200) with QJ only to find the button pushing behind me for another 4k and the the small blind also pushing (who was covered by the button), I decided I didn't want to pass as I was going to be short either way and difference was only a couple of blind steals (plus I was getting nearly 4-1). Turned out I was up against 99 (button) and AQ (small blind), the nines making a full house. As fate would have it, Pab, Jen and Flushy just arrived back in time to rail see me put my last chips in with K3, where I hit top pair against AJs only for him to hit runner runner flush.

After this we decided to head home, Pab was starting to look like he might die, so really needed just to sleep, we did spot an interesting cash game though before we left, Mick Fletcher, Thewy and Barry Neville all playing. Perhaps another time...

What a shame the Aspers & GUKPT clash! I may yet make the Aspers Main Event on Saturday, it it all goes horribly wrong for me in Brighton on Friday.

Well, we're only 15 minutes past the advertised time and we hear (from two floors up and two corridors across) that it's been shuffled up...

Many a player has squeezed into the unlikely double cardroom area of Brighton Grosvenor (separated by some tables, roulette etc. so during a seat change a tempted person could sneakily put a quick red-black bet on) and the press area is a good quarter of a mile from the action, so please bear with us as we gather stories in little batches and put them up every so often...

Spotted arriving late:

Neil Channing
Dave Colclough
Victoria Coren
Karl 'Blue Square Hit Squad' Mahrenholz

Spotted milling around:

One Ear Pab
Sunny Chattha
Jim Kerrigan
Nik Persaud

Early stage photo collection time now... Bear with us.  We also have no power, so after an hour there may be a short blackout as we fight the other 11 laptops for one of their power sockets.  I have been training Homer a la Rocky for just such a necessity.

Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 04:33:44 PM
It's squeezier than a squeezy squeeze play in the cardroom. Just to clarify, there is like next to no room in the centre, so if a player gets knocked out in the middle, he really needs Air and Sea Rescue to winch him out to safety. There's two sections with loads of gaming tables (strategically) placed in between, either way we might have a little trouble getting chip counts and hands from those in the centre of this maelstrom.

Play has started now anyway. 156 runners counted today...

Walsall winner Jerome Bradpiece bets 1.1k on the river of a 4h 2h 6h Jh Qc board, gets called, and shows Ahrt Js, his opponent flashes the Kh before mucking.

Elsewhere Mad Marty Wilson gets all his chips in on a 5s 6d 9s 7d board with 7h 6h against a 3.5k bet from his opponent, who calls with Jc Jd. 2s river doubles up the Mad one.

Yep, Matt looks awake and confident, except in this exact photo moment, despite the 7am finish last night (which involved him coming 8th, and only busting after foolishly running his A-Q into K-Q)... looks like success in the £100 will keep him going when his actual sleep deprivation threatens to kick in...

Player list going to be here any moment - but just a taster of the crowd assembled (read: packed behind some ropes) today:

Stuart Nash
Steve Bovis
Joe Grech
Michael Greco
Richard Ashby
JP Kelly
Jim Reid
Barney Boatman
Jules Adamson
John Exley
Stuart Fox
Sid Harris
Martin Green
Thomas Dunwoodie
Jeff Buffenbarger

Plus all the ones you've mentioned so far - actual total 148 players.  Apparently 11 no-shows will probably be playing tomorrow - chances of still buying in look somewhat slim...

Surely a "no-show" cannot "by right" get into the 2nd Day One? If so, many Day One-ers would deliberately "no show", & it would be an easy way to pick what Day to play, & thus over come the randomness of the "get what day you are given" buy-in Policy?......That would be randomlessnessless.

Barney Boatman bets 2k on an Aspades 2s 9c 9h Qh board. Jim Reid calls. Barney shows 9s 6s which is good.

Richard Ashby has doubled up, I gather most of the chips went in on the river of the 2s 3d Jd Aspades 9c board, his 4d 5h nut straight obviously being good against the opponent's mucked hand.

Rang the casino...not a lot wiser!!!

Apparently there are some seats left but they are not being sold as there is now a waiting list - it is possible to get on the list and pay tomorrow. Seats will be sold from the top of the list down but not sure at what time a seat is deemed to be not taken!! They are not sure how many people from the list will be able to buy in tomorrow.

As I said, not a lot wiser and could get on the list, arrive and still not get a seat.

That's what I was told, the actual story may be quite different.

No.  We've had one table break, and our original paper list had 11 extra names on it who weren't actually in any seats.  Best not to copy out that one as a whole table's worth of inaccuracy is not something we want to broadcast...

If there's anyone in particular you'd like updates on, however, let us know and we'll go and find them. :)

Jeff Nathan makes a good call on the river, with the board standing:  Ahrt 6c 5d 2c 8s.  He had been check-calling down (although the turn went check-check) and he found a 3k bet at him on the river.  After a bit of a pause, he called with Js Jh - that was good.
________________________________

Meanwhile it's not been plain sailing for Flushy - after about 20 minutes of the first level I saw him lurking by Pab's table...he was saying:
"I've flopped two sets and I'm down 2k.  Explain how that happened?"
Pab replies, "It's because you play so bad."
"I even folded set over set," Flushy carries on as if he were the partially deaf one.
"On the turn?"
"No, there I called to hit quads."

James is playing tomorrow. Karl and Jim are still around their 10k stacks. Chaz is down to about 8k, Jim meanwhile was badgering me to get a picture of Vicky Coren sucking on a piece of rock...
Praz just lost a pot to his nextdoor neighbour Flushy, Praz bet 1.5k on a 7c 5c Aspades Qh board, Flushy called and another player passed. Praz checked the river 6s but then paid off a 1.5k from Flushy's Ahrt 5h. (Here's a photo of both, mwahahah, two birds, one stone, no problem.)

Anyone want a last longer between One-Hand Rumit and Dubai?

Stuart Fox re-raises Ian Woodley's initial raise to 650, and then bets 1k after Woodley checks on the 8d 6c Ac board, getting the latter to pass.

Pab and Flushy are both on about 12k, JP is 17k, hit a set and flopped a nut-flush. (In separate hands, he's not that good!)

Billy Ngo    3,600
Rumit Somaiya  17,000
Barny Boatman  13,850

Hartwith in 'Disgusting' Hand Shocker:

Young Jules Adamson (sat, now, next to similarly Poker Verdict attired Neil Channing after the latter's table broke) just informed us that he'd been involved in the "sickest hand of the tournament," and that was only level two...

He got involved in a family pot (yes, all nine players limping preflop) holding 4s 4d.  The flop came 4h 2d 2c.  The small blind bet out 300, Jules flat called, and the rest of them got out of the way.
Turn:  Ks  The small blind bet 700, Jules upped it to 2,300 and found, to his delight, a raise of a further 3k (leaving his opponent 3k behind).  Wanting to assure that the rest of the stack went in, he flat called, and then in it went on the Kh river.
His hand was no good against the Kc 2s at that point, though.  Down to 5k from an early 17k...

Roberto vs Richard should be interesting!!!!

Here's that table in full, and if you can't quite see that flash of orange... it's Paul Parker, twisting a full yogic 180 degrees to carry on a conversation with someone on the table behind him.

With Paul Parker and Stuart Nash together, we only need someone dressed head to toe in yellow to make a life size version of a packet of Double Dip.

Just visible in the above photos featuring Roberto and Paul is the back of a stripey shirt belonging to Rupom Pal, a promising young player (first go at the GUKPT) who's not really done anything interesting so far today, apart from see an A-T-K flop with A-T when two others had the old Q-J and get off lightly.  9k, but worth keeping an eye on...

Flushy news now.

He checked called Ashley Hayles 2.5k bet on a Qc 4h 8s board, before checking the 3c and then calling, sorry 'Insta-calling' the turn push with 8h 8c, which was ahead of Hayles' Kc Kd. River was a 2c, Flushy over 20k now.

Everytime I go past Marty Wilson, he's talking about something bizarre... First it's something incomprehensible about the first lollipop lady being situated by his family home. Then it's some other entertaining guff about playing the world's biggest snakes and ladders game, then whilst betting on the turn of a 8-4-5-T board, he's talking about the start of the Shawshank Redemption whilst calling a clock on his opponent. His opponent passes Kings face up, a great pass after Marty shows Eights.

Neil Channing, who described his new table as 'Pokerverdictastic' just halved the number of players on it wearing the pictured team Red by getting himself eliminated...
Flop of 8-2-J, Neil bets, called.
Turn:  Q  Neil bets 4k, raise all in, call.  Simple as that - set of Twos for Channing, set of Eights for the winner.  Didn't see this hand personally, so that's your lot detail-wise, I'm afraid...

Matt Dale is on a bit of a roll down here in Brighton... his early big stack is courtesy of some Aces, with which he raised under the gun to 250 (this is a good level ago now), getting no respect and four callers.  The flop came A-J-x rainbow - so he bet out 600 - only two callers came with him for the raggy second diamond turn card.  At this point he bet out 1,400 and got re-raised 5k.  When he pushed in for 8k total his opponent had to reluctantly put it in - with Kd Td he had the flush and gurshot draw, but no hit and a happy Dale.

Comedy hand from Flushy now, he had so much fun telling me about it, he didn't care about missing a couple of hands.

He, along with 5 others, limps for 200 with Qs 9s. Vicky Coren on the button makes it 600, and ALL the limpers call.

Flop:

Ahrt Ac 8c

Everyone checks.

Turn:

9c

Checked to Flushy, who bets 200 (!) into the 4k+ pot, probably trying to find out where the ace is. He gets 3 callers, whilst Vicky mucks her hand.

The river is 6d and everyone checks. Flushy's Qs 9s is good against J-T, 7-7 and what was probably the naked Kc. Vicky passed Kings apparently. :D

JP doubles up with 9c 9h against an LP raiser with 6d 3d, he's still a bit short though.

One-hand Rumit is threatening to become Every-Hand Rumit.

First his 1.2k river bet on a 5h Qd Ahrt Aspades 4d with Ad 8d is paid off by Richard Ashby.

Then he takes down a 4-way pot with Ks Tc against the Kh 9h of one player and the Kd 9d of Barney who must have loved the flop of the Kc Qd 7d 6s 4h board.

JP is OUT, this photo taken shortly before he pushed with Ahrt Qh against a raiser with A-4, and despite hitting a Queen and two hearts, he still lost to trip Fours.

Richard Ashby is eyeing up One-Banana Rumit's Banana.

Finally, look who is back!

Praz makes it 750 to play in mid position, Flushy makes it 2,000 next to him, they're both fairly deep. Everyone else passes. Praz passes Ace King face up. Flushy shows Aces.

We were speaking to Flushy at the break and he said he didn't want play pots against Praz without genuine hands.

Serious  :respect: to that fold from Praz though.

Two former champions slug it out...

No, not those two...

Cardiff Winner, Michael Greco raises it up from the cut-off. The small blind calls, Walsall Winner Jerome Bradpiece in the big blind pushes his shortened stack in. Greco dwells a little before calling, the small blind folds.

Greco:

Aspades Qc

Bradpiece:

7s 7h

Board:

8h 2s Ts Kh Kd

Greco takes a small hit and Bradpiece doubles up his previously short stack.

Vicky Coren shoves for a big overbet after calling Praz's raise in the big blind on a Kh Ts 6s board.

Vicky: "Come on let's gamble...Or maybe not, it depends what you have."

Praz: "I have Sevens."

Vicky: "Let's gamble then."

Praz: "I can't call..."

And he mucks, Vicky flashes the Js, no doubt the other card was the Aspades, Qs or 9s.

Pab got caught bluffing on a 4c 3d 3c 5s Ad board by Aspades 7s for a 1.2k or so with Kh Jc (or it might have been Qc)

Simon Taylor is OUT, calling all-in with Queens on a 9d 7c 8d board against Shaf's Kings. 8c and Ac were the turn and river that were no help.

Shaf was his usually magnanimous self in victory. ::)

"Send it over to daddy."

Csaba Mak doubles up with the powerful Qs Qh all-in for around 4,500 on a Queen-high board against the nicely-dominated Ac Qc.  Back to 10k for the enigmatic youngster.
____________________

Elsewhere Flushy does manage to lose a few of those chips out of the towers (pictured).  Short stack Thomas Dunwoodie had managed to regenerate a decent number of chips this last level, and took James on in this pot.  They saw a flop heads up of:  2h Jc Jh.  Fluxhy, out of position, bet out 1,600.  Call.
Turn:  5c  Now he check-calls Thomas' 1,500 bet (or was it 2k?  Some green 500s got in the middle, anyway).
River ("Heart!" Says Dunwoodie before it's dealt, unexpectedly):  7d  Now Flushy checks, Thomas bets 3k instantly, and gets called almost equally instantly.

Dunwoodie has rivered a house with his 7c 7s while Flushy's Ahrt Ad is flipped in disgust.  I think there might be one person in the card room who hasn't heard about this hand, which is one more than missed his story about withdrawing his entry from the £100 PLHE on Monday and Grosvenor refunding him his money without his £10 juice...

Paul Parker (fig.2) revealing that it's actually six green chips either side of his magnetic stick collection which he's using as stilts to make his stack look better.  "When do you think it will be my turn to have a good stack?" he laments.

Jerome Bradpiece is OUT in pretty galling circumstances. Jeff Buffenburger and one other player limper, Jerome made it 1,700 with A-Q. Jeff re-raised to 5,000 and the other limper passed. Jerome put Jeff on a pure steal and pushed and Jeff was committed to call with his....K-3

And a 3 came on the turn...

While doing a bit of aimless rail staring during a quiet period, a railer asked me, "Do you want a picture of the winner?"  Well, always interested in extremely enthusiastic tips for the top (or instances of psychic powers), I was pointed at this guy - Chris Gavriel.  Up to tenth in chips after four levels, this is probably your current leader (or top three at least) with 45,500.

Something about calling a John Exeley Aces raise with 9d 2d, calling on an A-T-x board with one diamond, calling a big turn bet when a second diamond hit before pushing when he rivered his miracle flush and being called.

Praz made a small raise on Vicky Coren's big blind and she called. She bet out 500 on the T-7-3 flop with two diamonds, Praz made it 1,100. She moved in for 4,100 more and he called with Jacks. She held 7-3, the turn was a 4 giving Praz a flush draw as well as his overpair, but the river was also a 4, giving Praz Jacks and Fours, (the Group after Michael left) and sending the EPT London winner to the rail.

50k pot drifts the whole of Ashley Alterman's stack to Glynn Rees - his Kc Kd vs. Alterman's Ahrt Kh, preflop, I assume.  Thanks to Jeff Rogers for taking pity on me looking at the empty seat and the new big stack and explaining the coup...

Ian Woodward limped on John Exley's big blind, Exley checked, but then bet 1,000 on the Qd Td 8d, an action flop if ever I saw one... Woodward made it 4,000 and Exley pushed all-in. Woodward eventually made the call with Js 9c taking longer than he probably needed, which was vunerable but far ahead of Exley's Kd Qh.

Turn:

Kh

Extra outs...

River:

2d

Exley doubles up and Woodward is on deathwatch.

I think, from left to right, we have Nik Persaud's nose, Dave Colclough, Mad Marty Wilson and Evil Elvis (actual name Paul Astaniotis) who kind of steals any multiperson photo.  Well, you do when your outfit involves rhinestones and you're not on stage in a Nashville nightclub.

Elvis has, unfortunately, left the building a fair while ago now...

Actually, if I may make so bold as to dare to correct Lady Mason, the gentleman's name is "Pol" Astaniotis, & is the partner of one Sam Day. An architect by profession, he lives in north London.

Had a good run in the Paddy Power Irish Open, getting paid with quads & a House, eventually finishing 69th for €3,500. No other serious form of note, other than being a steady casher at Equal Chance, in Walthamstow, & being a Pub League Champion.

Pab is OUT.

Paul Parker makes it 3k from the cut-off with 6k back. Mo Muse shoves for 17k from the small blind. Pab goes into the tank and eventually pushes, covering Mo by just a few hundred. Paul Parker passes Aspades Qd

Muse:

9c 9d

Pab:

Jd Js

Flop:

5d 9h 9s

Turn:

Jc...

River:

3s.

A 40k pot, yikes.

Pab went out next hand with 9-8 vs K-3.

SOS for DTD's DC -

Small blind Dave Colclough may have, according to tablemate Karl, been thinking about raising, but big blind neighbour Josh Gould apparently talked him out of it, so they saw a limp-check flop of:  9s 3s 9d.  Dave checked, Josh bet 600 (min bet).  Dave raised another 1,000, and pretty swiftly after that got raised a further 2k.  El Blondie then performed what is technically referred to as the chunk bet, whereby you just pick up a chunk of large denom chips, such as to cover or commit your opponent, and quickly place it over the line.  But Josh was happy to go all-in with his Qh 9h - Dave could only watch as his slowplayed Kc Kh stayed behind as the turn and river emerged 4c Qc.

Still on around 20k, though, even after losing the 15k or so in this pot.

Flushy and Praz just got in a big pot. Flushy checked called a 3k bet from Praz on an A-9-2 rainbow board before check/raising a 4k bet on the Jack turn for another 7.5k. Praz passed eventually after a long dwell and the clock being called. Flushy did say he'd tell us later what he had but would prefer if it wasn't reported until after the tournament, (or he busts out).

So the guessing game begins...

Answers on a postcard please.

Roberto Romanello seems, at this late stage of the day, to have gotten going, chip-building wise and chatwise... Trying to watch a hand going on on the table next to him (Jeff Rogers taking out Fabio Esposito's short stacked 8d 8c with his Kh Kd) but all I could hear was:
"Why didn't you call me then, what did you have?"
"If you f***ing listen, I said I can't call..."
"Swearing now - I thought we were mates!  I thought we had something there..."
and then...
"But I did have Aces!  Next time I am going to show you.  I am."

I have no idea what was going on there to start these minirants but it must have been interesting.

Paul Parker is OUT - down to 6k he shoved with 6h 9h - could have been worse against his caller's A-J...but no hit and he's on the rail, saying, "If I had to come back on Day Two I wouldn't know what to do..."  I think he might be dangerously close to acquiring the nickname 'the Pessimist...'

Mystic Dave has extracted a few chips back after his Kings mishap, (Though he wasn't impressed that I didn't see the 505=SOS card thing). He had Aces against...2-4 to take out a short stack before extracting a 4k call from Stuart Nash on a Aspades 9h 2c 3s 6d board. Dave's hand, the classically raggy 9d 3c.

Mark McCluskey is OUT, Ace King vs Queens. Ace on the flop, Queen on the river.

Marty Wilson raised to 1,700 preflop from UTG, the big blind called. The big blind c/raised Marty's 2,200 bet on the Kc 3c 5s board to 8,200. Marty called. "Insta-called," said Flushy, "Make sure you add that." The big blind checked the 9h turn and Marty bet 9k. Big blind folded.

"Happy Birthday!" said Flushy.

Snoopy is currently in London, but you can see your man in the last of the preceding set of photos... what you can't see is that he's one of the shortest stacks still remaining at this late hour... under the starting 10k but still holding on...

Then with literally seconds to go I saw him shove a big chunk of stack in preflop over the top of under the gun all-in mover Ronnie Debeaulox... although Marty gave it the dwell in the small blind (tense moments for James, perhaps) he got it heads up, as he wanted with his Ad Kc vs. Ron's Ahrt Qs.  No surprises from the board this time, and "I'm back in it..."

And the closing minutes of the tournament saw absolute carnage - one table losing four players in a matter of minutes as the clock ticked down.  Another eliminatee was Daniell Tock, whose Aspades Tc ran into Jh Jd... honestly we're not entirely sure who's left and who's busted - down to under 46 players and we were kicked out for the final chip count (in which we no longer participate directly).

This count will be making its way up by 5am today, or before 4pm tomorrow, when Day 1B kicks off...

This was the sickest pot i think i have ever played. Praz has overtaken me in chips and i have 37k, he raises to 1600 on the button and i decide after hours of play this is the coup i am going to play back in, i flat call, John Exley calls in the BB.

The flop  Ahrt 2h 9c

We both check Praz bets 3200, i float, John passes.

At this point i think Praz has pretty much any 2 and i am going to try to take this away on the turn or the river.

The turn comes the  Jd

Wahey! I have a draw, i check and Praz bets 7500, at this point i go into the tank, thinking why am i in this pot, can i still win this pot etc, after about 3 minutes Praz asks if i want to know what he has, i point out it would make my decision easier, he says "i have a set" which goes to confuse me even more! I was fairly confident if he had an A he would check behind and call the inevitable river bluff so i fancied he had the nuts (or close to it) or he is at it, eventually i decided to raise 16k more, making it 23.5k to play leaving 9k back.

Praz goes deep into the tank now, i can't exactly remember the exact speech going but his dwell is the longest i have had to endure, he is saying he thinks i am making a move with absolute air (eeek he is on me) the rail has got very big at this point given the hand has taken 12-15 minutes, Jon Raab is stood there with a video camera and i point out its probably not a good idea to get this one wrong in front of the sponsor (i felt i needed to somehow talk him out of this one as he was lining up for the push) plenty more was said and after an 8 minute dwell the clock is called on Praz by another player, he times all the way down and passes with a second to go.

It turns out he had a 2 and was seriously considering jamming for my last 9k, it would have to be a very embarrassing pass from me, happily though i lived to fight on!

Chopped 10 ways,,,, and final do not go together - 9 handed tables i thought?!?

For what its worth, I actually have a sneeky feeling James will take this one down - yes it pains me to say it but thats what I think. Might even have a bet if the odds are right?

Mr Rab? What odds are u offering on James?
